Great coverage of UK general election

I've really enjoyed reading and participating in the coverage the UK general election has received at MetaFilter, particularly the follow-up threads (which, in one case, might otherwise have been dismissed as news filter). Contrasting points of view expressed intelligently and with measure. Well done.

this thread is really fascinating stuf, complete with actual non-hostile debate!

Despite some snarking here and there, this thread is really fascinating stuf, complete with actual non-hostile debate! I learn something new every day. Kudos.

sidebar getting dated

The election contest item in the sidebar is pretty old now. Is it still there for a reason?

Censored!!

OK Matt : I took your deletion of my previous two posts on this subject, the 2004 election controversy ( and probably several by other folks ) as an indication that either 1) you oppose posts on the election controversy or 2) you want quality posts. Since I don't like to think of you as a site manager inclined towards censorship, I took the deletion of those posts as an indication that they weren't of sufficient quality. So, I addressed #2 : I thought that was a high quality post - well substantiated, and which presented an angle not yet discussed or noted elsewhere on the net. If you are opposed to discussion of the 2004 election, why not state that in your posting guidelines ? I feel that would be more helpful. Otherwise, new users may be confused for those unspecified posting categories which you are inclined to delete.

A poster wonders why his or her post was deleted

How do I find out why my FPP from today got deleted?

Viewropa: we don't talk about US politics

If any folks would like to escape from the probable concentration on the US election here for the next day or two (and maybe many weeks after), you are all very welcome to come and discuss European issues over a cup of tea and scones at Viewropa...

Election fatigue.

Election Fatigue. Could we put all the US Election links and discussion in just 1 front page post per day. Tempers are flaring, and the level of discourse is not improving. The moratorium was not successful. Besides, sometimes I want to reference a comment or link, and can't find it in the welter of election postings.

Yes, the other guy is evil.

Yes, I know the election is coming. Yes, I know there are cool sites that make fun of Bush and/or Kerry. Yes, the other guy is evil. But, who really cares that some cartoonists are mocking the President. I think that was an old meme around the time of Gutenberg.

Can't we please get back to posts about pancakes, bloggers, monkeys, and other non-election related topics.

With so much Bush on MeFi, maybe it's time to start bush.metafilter.com?

There are 32 instances of the word Bush on the MeFi front page. How about we start http://bush.metafitler.com? Or maybe just take over BushFilter?

Presidential election voter registration push

You have less than a week to register to vote in the US Presidental Election. Please take a moment to check out this voter information guide to help register. If you're already registered or don't live in the US, click here.

That's a great public service announcement, except there's one word wrong. It should be: "If you're already registered or don't vote in the US". Some people live in the US but can't vote, and some don't live in the US but can vote.

Also, I checked that link, since I live in France and want to vote, but it didn't help. There's a bunch of sites for registering, but most of them assume you live in the US. However, overseasvote2004 was very helpful (mentioned here). Help is useful, because it's all a bit complicated.

US election 2004 prediction contest

Four years ago there was a MeFi Election Prediction contest (original thread, results thread). Is rcade still around here? Does he or someone else want to coordinate a contest for this year?

New policy on election/iraq/political posts?

So, I notice there's a link in the sidebar to Devoter, and I was just wondering: is there a new policy about election/iraq/political posts? Should they be moved over to Devoter? Are you going to start deleting political threads here, Matt?

We don't ALL live in California or care about the election

While it is admirable that so many people on MeFi care about their local elections. Is there really a need for the numerous threads regarding the upcoming California election?

Dean may well be the bee's knees, but still.

Another post praising Howard Dean leads to charges of DeanFilter. There may be something to those charges: there have been several uncritical and laudatory Howard Dean posts on MetaFilter over the past few months, some of which seem interchangeable. And, as matteo points out, it's probably only going to get worse. We complain (rightly) when a post reeks of viral marketing; why shouldn't this be any different? Shouldn't we be more skeptical of breathless posts that coo over politicians? Aren't we (well, not me per se, but American voters) being sold something? Dean may well be the bee's knees, but still.

AU may back off unsuccessful "Pacific Solution"

AU may back off unsuccessful "Pacific Solution"
Howard himself may be clearing the ground for a back down. In a marked departure from his election campaign rhetoric, he said in an interview last week that turning asylum seekers' boats back to sea was "completely inhuman."
That's not just marked, it's a 180! There was a bit of interest in this story here a while ago, but I thought this new wrinkle in AU's aid-for-beds deal with Pacific nations didn't merit another "FPP." (see also 1, 2)

Will UK election threads cause international tensions?

The question (raised here) is one of tensions, etiquette and policy on Election posts. The Uk is currently going through an election, and much like the US is fairly well represented on Metafilter. But we all know how many posts were about the US election and how frustrating both the US contingent, but more specifically the UK contingent, were with them. Will UK election threads cause international tensions? Is this a bad thing? Is there a 'right to post' issue here, or are we going to be having a fully international vs UScentric discussion at any moment?

Tired of Ralph Nader posts

Now I would never, never try to impose my own ideas about what should or should not be posted on MeFi, but for the last three weeks I've been wishing I could go somewhere and set some field that said "Don't show me any thread whose parent includes either the words Ralph or Nader". Oh, how I wish I had that.

In the nine months I've been an active participant, I've never wanted such a thing before now. Well, only two more weeks and then it will all die down. I guess I can last that long. But it's been a long time since I've seen such an appalling waste of bits. grumble grumble
