Asian American MeFite Checkin
I never thought i'd be the one making a post like this, but here we are. Asian Americans of MeFi, I wanted to write and check in after the horrible shootings in Atlanta yesterday. [more inside]
Resources for Anti-Racism/BLM Activism and Funding
Lets's share links and spread the word on anti-racism community resources and anti-racism fundraising. I've seen some fantastic threads on Twitter that cover some of this, but it would be useful if Mefites could aggregate links for their local bail bond/mutual aid funds, as well as links to protest/anti-racism toolkits from around the world. Here's a great list of mutual aid funds (Threader link of an original Twitter thread, for easier reading).
This post should serve as a catch-all thread for a broad range of resources that will enable and embolden Mefites to get involved in the continuous work that is anti-racism activism, whether they're protesting in-person, donating from home, or want to help in other ways if they're unable to protest in-person or donate. I am going to regret this
I made a comment about Stephen King's "The Outsider" referencing what I thought was a well known trope. [more inside]
#poctakeover: The White Allies Thread
Following on from the massive work done by the POC community within MetaFilter, it was suggested in that MeTa that we set up a thread as a sort of “White Caucus”. Welcome to that thread! [more inside]
#poctakeover
Have you noticed an increase in posts about race by people of color lately? It’s not just your imagination. Come and learn about our #poctakeover initiative, and our major takeaways in trying to provide a vision of what a site truly inclusive of people of color would look like. [more inside]
Allow "push back" comments to stand
In light of the deletion of a Metafilter comment that pushed back against a racist comment in the Frank Ocean thread, I am requesting that the community discuss the benefits of allowing "push back" comments to stand - especially when those comments are insightful, enlightening and challenge other Mefites to be better members of the community. Following up on last month’s discussions: medium and long-term work
First, check out this other post today for necessary context and the immediate-term actions that the mod team is taking. This additional post is a roadmap for the future changes that we are considering, actions we have planned but haven't finished implementing yet, and some site issues that are not as directly related to the previous threads but tie into this process regardless. Following up on last month’s discussions: immediate actions and planning
Let's talk about how the MetaFilter community can be a more welcoming, comfortable, and equitable place for our non-white members. It's work that's overdue, from the moderation team and the community in general. There's a lot of context here, so read below before commenting. And it's vital that the voices at the center of this discussion are the community members with the most direct stakes in these issues, so if you're a member of the site's white demographic majority, you need to mostly be listening rather than speaking. [more inside]
Hearing from our members of color
In this recent MeTa, the community discussed the ways in which Metafilter does not serve people of color well. So this post is a space for discussion, dedicated for people of color. If you identify as a person of color, and you have suggestions, complaints, or just thoughts about the site, please share them here! [more inside]
Maybe not so grand
This is fairly minor in the scheme of things, and I feel kind of weird making a post about it, but it never gets easier to see Georgette Heyer and The Grand Sophy warmly recommended. [more inside]
The House of Orientalism
Please STOP writing about Asian people and Asian countries (Southeast Asian here) like they are
magical mysterious fairytale creatures from a long-ago-faraway exoticized Orient. Framing posts in this style is immediately alienating and hurtful, and it derails any possible discussion. It is not the same as writing about Western white people in this style, because white people have not been subject to the same patronizing
orientalist prejudices that people from Asian countries have.
Trying to find a story about young black man on the subway…
I believe this was either a story posted to the blue or a comment on the blue, featuring a story of a young man on the subway who happened to be black. When a few other black kids were being slightly disruptive, he was also instructed to get out even though he wasn't with them. It wasn't until the narrator (who is white) intervened that the police let him stay on the train. [more inside]
Reading the room on international posts
I was a bit disappointed when the recent thread about Iceland's elections devolved into lolz pretty much from the get go. Would it be possible for us as a community to be a little more conscious of how we approach posts about other countries? [more inside]
Not All Problems Are Caused By Being Asian.
Can we stop bringing issues of non-Westernness into Ask Metafilter answers where they aren't warranted? [more inside]
We need to have a discussion about racism.
The cultural appropriation thread here went very, very poorly, and I think it highlights a pattern in ways we interact with people of color and talk about issues of race here on Metafilter that create a hostile environment for PoC. I want to bring up some of the tropes we saw in the FPP, and highlight them as specific suggestions as to what I need our community to do and be mindful of going forward, so we don't continue to alienate PoC on this website. "Brown People" Don't Need You Defending Them Like That
We've all seen it -- "brown people" used as an ironic way of saying "X is racist": whether it's accusing anyone in the U.S. military of "[doing] horrible things to foreign brown people" or an academic "getting a disproportionate amount of crap because he's siding with brown people over white people" or even about how "The 'aliens built the pyramids' notion is a recent iteration of an long-term ongoing narrative stating that 'Those brown people couldn't possibly have done this'." #WomensMarch Discussion / Support thread
The last #WomensMarch MetaTalk thread has closed; I would like one open to discuss what's happening, and if anyone needs to throw out a question.
deddit
Given this FPP about reddit's racism, and with the notion presented in that thread here, I'd like to float the idea of a blanket ban on links to reddit on the Blue. [more inside]
#WomensMarch
I'm issuing a #WomensMarch* Challenge - can we add 100 extra FFPs by women in the month of March? [more inside]
You sound just like a _____!
There is currently a practice across Metafilter, especially within Metafilter proper (the Blue) and Metatalk (the Grey) of making personal attacks against other users that I feel undermines the community aspect of the site. The attacks I am concerned with most often take the form of ugly insinuations that the user is deliberately derailing, trolling or using common tactics which are allegedly known to be popular with (in alphabetical order, thee could be more, these are all I could think of when I set about making this thread):
- Anti-Semites
- Bigots
- Conservatives
- Misogynists
- MRAs
- PUAs
- Racists
- Redditors (specifically, usually The Red Pill subreddit)
- TERFs
- Transmisogonists
It's not shocking if you hear that sort of thing all the time.
I'd like to ask that people stop posting "ironic"/"what if we were talking about X TOPIC" type comments to make their point like this comment in the Alinea baby post. [more inside]
"Indian giver" is still not okay
Racial Slur
No matter how interesting I find the topic, I find the title of this thread incredibly problematic---is it just because i am canadian?
Just because you didn't say "go fuck yourself" doesn't mean you were civil
This deletion is racist!
Failure at the mediumest levels
You tell me how the first part of this post wasn't relevant to the second part? It's a story of triumph over adversity and every news article about those awesome kids mentioned where, specifically, they lived.
This is moderation, it's racism, pure and simple.
Animal totem as ethnic slur?
Isn't referring to French people as "frogs" offensive?

This is why we can't have nice things
I was afraid from the start that this post would get out of hand. Unfortunately it seems I was right. If we have to rage, let's do it here instead. And while we're at it, maybe we can discuss whether & how a different framing could have prevented or minimized the train wreck we see before us.
Let's not put the n-word on the front page please.
The N-word on the front page makes Metafilter extremely not work friendly, in addition to being just plain offensive. Can we do something about that? Thanks. [more inside]
Moslems? Really?

Why are people who oppose racism often reluctant to discuss class?
Why are people who oppose racism often reluctant to discuss class? In the Jackson Jive incident, five upperclass Australians, four white and one Indian, did an astonishingly racist skit that was paid for by the show's upperclass producers, yet in the discussion on MetaTalk, the idea that this might have something to do with class was only brought up as a joke. Australian Racism Denial - uergh!
Do you slander Romani?
I'm sorry, but did someone just post that Gypsies are raised as criminals and have no moral values? Not just a literary allusion to lower-class itinerants, he calls out the Romani by name - the same Romani slaughtered by the million by the Third Reich for being a race of evil criminals. And it gets ten favorites? Really? [more inside]
This isn't even remotely cool
"Gypsy values"? "Morals of gypsys"? "Classic Romani strategies"? What the fuck paulsc?
This is a stupid question on multiple levels.
Seriously?
korean doctors = robbers?
Is it just me or is "Will the Korean doctor rob me blind??" a mildly racist way to start an AskMe post? [more inside]
Deletion of post about racist Australian Mayor.
I think the deletion of this post by indienial is a bad call. The continued destruction of all things Aboriginal is a big fat important & undercommented issue, and one which I was looking forward to reading comments about. [more inside]
why are racist questions allowed on netatalk
So it's cool to post racist and stereotypical trolls to ask.me now? When did the rules change?
Those Run of the Mill Hasidic Landlords
what?
Curious why Poolio's first comment was deleted.
crush racism an sexism forever
I would be more comfortable speaking with someone gay. Is that kind of sexism halal on AskMe? I need a straight interior decorator (gay men make me uncomfortable). Where can I eat in a nice whites-only restaurant?
What's the most offensive, racist joke you have ever heard?
I can't see any justification for this AskMe.
Commenter in contentious AskMe protests allegations of derailing behavior
Compare and contrast:
How do I deal with a Muslim co-worker who doesn't like me? which is pretty much one uninterrupted chorus of "what does his being Muslim have to do with it?" and How do I keep my [Latino] neighbors from stealing my power? in which someone, i.e. me, asking the same question, was insulted and accused of derailing.

Racism on AskMe.
Is it really OK to promote ethnic stereotypes? If not, why do we have this?
I would have bumped them off and then blamed it on the blacks.
What would you have done?

Hey refugee/racist people, get your own thread. Eight comments into it, the troll succeeds and we're no longer talking about the camps. Good work.
