Metafilter quality challenge (in re: Anna Nichole postings)

Kirkaracha Love

Kudos to kirkaracha for dodging the urge to be clever and actually making the text of his link to IMDB the name of the movie. Rather than content free nouns, adverb or adjectives. "Honey, I've got a tool that'll fix anything." -- Actor in this sequel would have been less useful.

Moderation of Morality Talk in Science Thread

Space exploration topics in just about any online community are inevitably derailed by "why isn't that money being used for worldpeace/hungrychildren/education" bleeding hearts, so that the original subject is lost in repetitive defense of space programs. May I request that if you have a bone to pick with money being spent on space exploration, that you post your own link with discussion on the issue, rather than interrupting a good science discussion with never-ending arguments about the antiphilanthropism of government-funded space flight?

Too Much Trolling

There seems to be a contingent of people on this website (we all know who they are) who feel the need to pollute threads that would be otherwise relevant, reasonable, and/or interesting. They come in, spew their opinion, and then proceed to turn thought-provoking material into a three ring circus. After having to sift through heaps of vitrol to find comments that even remotely relate to the topic at hand twice today, I've had enough. Your need to have your last word in a public meeting space that prides itself on civil, topical conversation is disgustingly revealing of your immaturity and arrogance. As a user of this site who is primarily a lurker, I want to make a statement on behalf of those people who come here for the fascinating content: If you feel the need to troll and argue, shut up already.

There's a link with an entire article posted - I don't think this falls under "Fair Use"

The link associated with this post is not close to being "fair use".

Why do people post "."?

What exactly is the . in people's replies? I used to ignore them, but when I saw a dozen or so in the Nipsey Russell thread I just had to know...

Double Submitting Comments

This isn't about double posts but double posts inside a post. Or something like that, MI.

ParisParamus Turns Over New Leaf

I have decided to be kinder and sweeter on Metafilter. Less annoying, too.

We could have done better

I really didn't like the way the drakepool thread in MeTa went yesterday. It reminded me too much of the ripper IRC tragedy. I don't have any answers, but I think that could have gone better.

Can I contact someone via MetaTalk?

I want to pass on some info to someone regarding their expired (and kind of unfulfilled) AskMe question, but there's no email listed on his/her contact page. Is it within MeFi etiquette to post an open note here on MetaTalk for nakedcodemonkey?

You don't have a 'right' to post anywhere

Sigh. . . [+]

Let's argue in threads instead of in MetaTalk

Perhaps it's time to reconsider using MetaTalk to denounce single comments and only slightly contentious single posts. [More inside.]

Calling Out Hama7

classic troll: toss a turd you *know* will incite much argument, for no apparent reason.

Too Much Meta-Criticism?

Hmmm. I think one or two levels (depending on how you think about it, that's how it is when dealing with meta-levels, see Princess Bride.) of metalevelness is enough. Critizing a stupid Metafilter FPP should be done in one MetaTalk post, not in an another FPP and Two Stupid MetaTalk posts.

Would MetaFilter be better off without an etiquette/policy section in the gray?

The Pollo Campero discussion is a nice example of members drowning out derailing attempts without resorting to MetaTalk (at least until I fucked it up by bringing it here). Would MetaFilter be better off without an etiquette/policy section in the gray?

Calling Out ParisParamus

Is there any reason to tolerate inflammatory hate-screed like this?

Once again: PATHETIC, delusional, A-HOLE PACIFISTS.

Good FPP derail belongs in Metatalk?

After seeing this thread denigrate into a debate over the question of whether it was a good FPP or not, I started wondering: is a metatalk thread an appropriate vehicle for trying to divert etiquette debate out a blue thread even when the metatalk thread itself is likely to turn into a rehash of a zillion other metatalk threads?

Broken URLs on Metafilter

I don't know if its just in IE or what, but several posts, the Gnod and plasticmonkey.com post are the most recent examples, point to http://www.metafilter.com/www.gnod.net (for example). I looked at the source, and this only happens on the posts that don't specify http. Is this an IE only thing, or does that always happen?

Is MidasMulligan trolling?

Troll, Ignorant, or Other?

Notify when you MeTa, kids

So I mentioned this here, but I'll ask here as well:

How about a way to remind people when they create a MetaTalk thread that they should invite/inform interested parties? I don't know how you'd do it -- maybe a popup the first time someone hits the site after the thread has been created (like the joke popup the other day).

Why Are Links Adding Metafilter URL to Them?

Has anyone noticed that a lot of the links people are building have http://www.metafilter.com crammed in front? I don't have specfic examples, but I've seen it at least four times.

MetaTalk Getting Crowded

Whoa! What's up with MetaTalk all of the sudden? Now we're getting multiple posts per day in several categories?! I count 12 (now 13) today alone. Is MetaTalk getting too crowded? The quality of the posts and discussion here is really going downhill. Remember when every post was on-topic, relevant, and well thought out? It just seems like posts are tossed up without thinking and comments get even less consideration. It's really wearing me out.

Can I Self-link in Comments?

Is this self-linking?
posted by daver on Apr 19, 2001 - 3 comments

Too much attacking lately.

"Can't you folks simply address an issue and tell us what you think without attacking the poster rather than what has been posted?" A few threads have featured variations on this sentiment, so I figured the subject was worth a longer look here.

Have I Trolled?

Okay, I've been accused of trolling. Have I trolled? And what did I say that was a troll? I'll try to avoid it in the future if I've horribly offended the community. Mark likes Metafilter, and doesn't want to be noise in the signal.
