What's the rule/precendent/whatever for FPPing a site that is closed to non-members (and is a pay site) but which may be of interest/use for Mefites? There's not much to see unless you're a member and I can't recall seeing a similar post in the past. Yes? No? Maybe?

I wanted to create an FPP for this ten second film festival, which I think would be of interest to many MeFites, but I've run into a couple of ethical and logistical conundrums: 1) The festival is being run by a friend of mine, so I suppose I might be a little biased as to this being The Best of The Web. 2) You really have to be in the Twin Cities area to see the screening and win a prize, even though submissions are accepted from anywhere. Any thoughts about this being FPP worthy?

What's the policy on posting links you found on Fark, Slashdot or BoingBoing? I read through each of these daily, and constantly find links on MeFi that were posted earlier on one of those other three sites. I've refrained from posting info that I found on those other sites because it seems to easy. If you get the info from one of those other sites, shouldn't you do a "via xxx?"

Can we please not use tinyURL in postings and especially in FPPs.

They are of no benefit and they put a another layer of vulnerability between readers and the content. And they are guaranteed not to work at some point in the future.

Not only do the URLS expire they are recycled. So even if they don't point to tubgirl now they might in the future.

Every time there is a complaint on MetaTalk about a post/type of post on the Metafilter front page, somebody will always say "If you don't like it/them, don't read them." I find this extremely frustrating, and I believe it ignores the real issues. [More Inside]

Hasn't "self policing" pretty much run it's course by now? I mean, it worked great when we had lots of new people coming in everyday. But today's MetaFilter is made up of people who have *all* been self policed for well over a year. None of us are going to change our ways. Recent attempts at self policing seem to be getting embarrassingly pointless. Can we stop calling it "self policing" and start referring to it by the more accurate term - "masturbatory rhetoric"?

The Pollo Campero discussion is a nice example of members drowning out derailing attempts without resorting to MetaTalk (at least until I fucked it up by bringing it here). Would MetaFilter be better off without an etiquette/policy section in the gray?

GeoCities is, of course, notorious for falling to pieces if more than three people click on one of its sites (though anastasiav's secondary links more than make up for her first). It's happened to everyone, so I wonder whether more experienced posters have untold ways of guessing what sort of traffic a posted website will bear? Are there any ways to avoid the "MetaFiltered" meltdown? Are there any steps posters can take to preempt the predictable outcome, besides including the (unsatisfactory) Google cache? Can the content be saved in another way, in order to answer users' queries?

In short, what is the best policy for fragile links, assuming they're worth posting anyway?

It's great that Matt is just one of the guys when it comes to posting but, with respect, this post of his seems way below average. It's a short news item, from a big media source, which will already be known to those who follow the news. The post, though, is not the point. My question is "To what extent are we allowed - or able - to criticize his posts as if he were just another user?" Is it ungracious, ungrateful or downright rude, for instance? Fwiw, my opinion is that special treatment and undue deference are just as annoying and even insulting.

After reading this article, which was linked at Plastic, I was tempted to post it here, at MeFi, but then I decided not to. Isn't Plastic a popular site among MeFi readers, and wouldn't posting this link be redundant? Is there a general rule about posting from popular sites, or does it always come down to a hunch?

Threads should be bias and threads should be made to provoke thought. However when does a thread cross the line of appropriate and thought provoking into the realm of insults and claptrap? What about this one or this one (self-post)? Should the inmates do the policing? If so, how can it policed? If a weblog is a form "journalism" should there be some sort of code of ethics? Or guidelines for objectivity?

I'm new to Metafilter, at least as a poster anyway, and I have been less than satisfied with the quality of my comments, especially my front page post. I think my dissatisfaction comes from my lack of experience in posting to a forum that has such a high expectation for quality. This tends to create a bit of hesitation in my posting, which results in over editing and an extremely stiff writing style. Of course the best way to overcome that, is by commenting frequently in order to become more comfortable and fluid in my comments and post. The downside to that, of course, is the possibility of tripping all over myself, in an otherwise quality message thread. This is very frustrating to me, because I see the type of poster I want to become, and I'm not sure how to get from here to there.

Making matters more difficult is my lack of computer knowledge. As an example, I love the option of renaming a url, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to edit multiple urls into a single paragraph.

If anyone has any helpful hints on how to gain experience as a front page poster, without making a mess of things in the process, I'd love to hear them. I've also sniffed around the web looking for a handy guide to url editing, and I've not had any luck, so if anyone could point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

I'd like to suggest that there might be a bit of a danger these days of stripping some potential away from the site. A lot of new users are being called out (or belittled) rather promiscuously for posts or comments that are often no different than what they have been accustomed to seeing from Metafilter elders pre-14k (as well as post-14k). Vigilance is worthy and needed in order to protect the integrity of Metafilter, but I suspect that there is a risk of creating an atmosphere of paranoia in which many promising new members will be afraid to post anything that they are not absolutely certain will not reap condemnation. First off, I'm not trying to be snarky or imply that anyone did anything wrong here. I just want clarification from the community on something I'm unsure about. This thread updates a previous thread with new information. However, the previous thread in question was started the day before, and already had this information added, 40 minutes before the new thread was started. Is there a decent period of grace before one can consider it worth posting an update thread rather than adding to the existing one, or is this always ok now?

Norton DC's "marker" post is simple and to the point. It only links to a photograph but the way it's worded suggests the picture is representative of a wider subject: careless parenting, "kids will be kids", toy safety and possibly the redundance of "creative" presents such as crayons or markers for toddlers, etc. So is it a felicitous one-off or an example to be followed?
