Blue posts for deep sea green posts should link to deep sea green posts September 2, 2015 3:34 PM   Subscribe

On August 27, avoision made a self-post on the deep sea green about his Villanelle Bot.
On August 30, oakroom made a post about the Vinalle Bot on the blue, but didn’t go through projects when posting the link. Because of this, there’s no “official” indication that the two are linked: no highlighting on Projects, no little link to the project at the end of the FPP.
I think if a mod discovers the link post-facto or if a mefite tells the mod about the link, they should add these formal connections. It seems like good style, and a good way to increase attention for community members doing cool things.

Secondary question: what color is Projects?

Yeah, if you spot a MetaFilter post that has a Projects sibling, go ahead and let us know and we can make the connection in the background. That will put a note on the Projects post that it has been posted to MeFi.

I don't think it's a great idea to automatically add something to the MeFi post though. The original poster could have spotted it somewhere else—there might not be a Projects connection to mention.

I just linked up the post here in the background.

I also noticed that Metroid Baby linked to the Projects post as the first comment in that thread. That's great, and that's always an option too.

I noticed that too but just shrugged, as Metroid Baby made that first comment with the link; also, I was busy with kittens.

My project and boo_radley's thread need a link.

I wonder if this is a first. A post to the blue before a post on the projects page. Heh.

I think the real question is, what did oakroom know and when did they know it? We may need a special moderator to hold the inquest. Maybe oakroom found something neat on the internet and linked to it, this has been known to happen.

Thanks mbrubeck, linked those up.

I assume that’s what happened! It’s happened before, & will happen again. I just think it’s better for the site when those things get tied together.

In my head I've been calling it The Avocado, though that's wildly inaccurate.

Where are kittens? Tell us more about these kittens.

I think you are doing metafilter wrong.

In this instance, I did come across the Villanellebot elsewhere (via the fabulous Erin McKean, if you want to know). It seemed like a very Metafilter kind of thing, so I wondered if the creator was in fact Mefi's own, but only checked the Blue -- I am not a regular reader of Projects and it didn't cross my mind to check there. Glad to have them linked up now!

Maybe the link search that gives a warning that you might be posting a double could search Projects as well?

Also, fine with me if mods want to add the Projects link to the post itself.

Yes, please! I would like this very much.

kitten pics here (hope this self-link is okay? if not, please do delete). It is a big day for the kittens today: first vet visit! They're going to check on their weight-gain, give them dewormer boost, and a distemper shot. Ouch!

I think that's a nice impulse—people would like to promote other parts of the site if they can. I feel like if we build it into the site tools it becomes an expectation rather than a nice extra if someone thinks of it. So with this feature in place, people would start getting pressure to include a Projects link if it exists. We'll discuss it, but I think it has some downsides too.
