Rolling out some updated site documentation
We're updating some site documents today to better reflect contemporary MetaFilter. Today's updates include the New User pages that potential new community members move through when signing up, the site's core guidelines page, and a new document discussing common microaggressions and being mindful about the impact of dominant-culture dynamics on a diverse membership. I'll talk in more detail about all that below the fold. [more inside]
Great N00b Influx of '04
Wow. It's just occurred to me that it was 7 years ago today that I signed up during the Great N00b Influx of '04. The day when, officially, this place started going to the dogs (in a good way). [more inside]
Five dollars!
Meta-metafilter: What are examples of some other online communities that have successfully kept the quality of posts/forums at a high level by requiring a nominal $5 to $10 signup fee? [more inside]
An author at Damn Interesting signs up for a Mefi account having been linked on the blue
Neat! Metafilter links to an article on DamnInteresting.com, creator of DamnInteresting and author of the linked article signs up for Metafilter account.
link to give-a-mefi-membership
Hey Matt, in the gifting spirit, how about a link to the give-a-mefi-membership gift option somewhere on the Blue? Did the "beta" period work out? If so, don't be shy. It's a great feature. I just used it. But I had to hunt and peck through the MeTa archives to find it :)
How many people sign up per day?
My friend and I were discussing MeFi and came to a point of contention when estimating the number of new users MeFi receives per day. My guess was 5 to 10, his was 25 or more. Perhaps this argument can be laid to rest here. How many new users does MeFi average per day?
Pony: alternate payment methods
Can we get another way to pay for accounts then paypal? I'd rather pay $20 for an account through another service then use them. There are several, relatively cheap credit card transaction services out there.
Oregon: register to vote!
The voters deadline for Oregon is October 12th, two days from now. Oregonians, please make sure you have registered to vote!
what is the system bottleneck that makes new users a bad thing?
Matt - speaking curiously, what is the system bottleneck that makes new users a bad thing? I presume it's database load, because the logged-in user enjoys comment counts and other database-intensive features that are demanding to serve. The static, logged-out homepage is easy to serve, even to a large number of visitors, by comparison, right? The real danger number to watch is the pageviews by logged-in users (please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm totally guessing). Are there features we could sacrifice for the sake of an open reg? What are you all willing to give up to open the gates? User comment history? Custom timezones and comment previews...?
140 is Twenty in base something-or-other
Question: if new user signups were limited to twenty new users a day, why did we end up with 140 new members in the span of a two-day period? Could this account for the excess strain on the server today?
[I thought about just sending Matt an e-mail but thought some others might be interested in the response.]

User Signup Policy
What about tweaking the new user signup method in order to accommodate overseas wannabes? [more inside]
Signups are closed; could we give our unused, inactive accounts to new members?
Bring out your dead! (more inside)
How did these users sign up?
The about page, when signups were closed (2002)
The About Page says: ...to hear some philosophies guiding the site and community, check out the new user message.
However, since signups are closed, the new user message no longer says much. Maybe whatever text was there (minus the signup form, of course) could be placed somewhere else so people can read it?

Registration is better closed
Okay. I asked it in a thread, and only got one response. My question for the masses (without an agenda) is this....we've obtained about 1500+ new users in the last 4-6 weeks. When do we start talking about turning sign-ups off again?
does anyone know if this is ever going to happen...?
"Jul 16 The new server is up and running. I'll re-enable signups sometime this week."
that week has come and gone... does anyone know if this is ever going to happen...?
