Static page for non-members to reduce load September 20, 2001 10:26 PM   Subscribe

I've restored the main page for members, non-members will get a page that is somewhat static and updated every five minutes. I've removed the custom sorting options for non-members, since it's an expensive query. I'm trying to minimize resource use, as the server is getting pummelled now. In the long term, I'll continue doing optimizations with the code and server, and hopefully be picking up the latest release of ColdFusion server (5.0) and some more RAM.

I don't know why, but the sideblog has been in a state of permanent collapsedness for me for some time. I can open it, but the next time I come back it's closed again.

Also, every time I post in MetaTalk I have to re-enter my password. Whyzay?

Matt,

Though I mentioned this once before, I fear it was buried rather rapidly:

When asked what brought me comfort during these rather trying times, I responded - without pause - that MetaFilter itself was a refuge. This community of strangers made an inconceivable tragedy slightly more berable.

I'm sure that I echo the sentiments of thousands in thanking you for creating, and maintaining this wonderful web site.

Matt -- did you turn the main page back to static for everyone? That's all I'm getting when I hit the site from the main URL, and I am always logged in.
