A decade-old AskMeFi comment advising how to ask a roommate to move out went viral on Twitter yesterday, more than likely due to the roommate ignoring the request and responding with a Wordle, per the screenshot. People noticed the requester likely copied and pasted from the internet as they left the closing quotation mark in the text. The original post.
Let's all wish a very happy and hopefully stress-free b-day to outgoing veteran mod, inveterate punster, and all-around mensch, MeFi's own cortex "Josh" Millard. [more inside]
As we know, a depraved billionaire bought [some of, kind of] Twitter. This thread is for discussion of where else you are for social media, such as Mastodon instances—and if you want, to tell others where to find you.
Is it good manners to ask permission before linking to a non-corporate social media account? [more inside]
There are at least 2 prolific Twitter accounts that have been actively harassing Mefites (including myself): Mefi Outsider and Go Mefi. It's high time we actually talk about them. [more inside]
It's a request. I have never been on Twitter, and don't plan to be. So when there's a comment on the blue that consists only of a link to a tweet, I can't read it. I just see a picture of a bird. This is frustrating, especially when I don't bother to over-hover the link to identify it as a tweet. My understanding is that tweets are limited to a small number of characters. If there isn't some Twitter mechanism blocking the copying of content, could you please paste that content into the comment? TIA
Author, actor, avatar of the PC, sometime Daily Show guest, former This American Life contributor, and current internet/podcast/New York Times judge John Hodgman has mentioned (called out?) a particular blue website on his Twitter account. We are a convenient tool to be used in mocking Mitt Romney’s stern disapproval of the political situation:
Whoa. Powerful tweets continue to stack up in opposition to the president! If Trump isn't careful, I bet these portraits of unwavering courage might post something to metafilter next! As the coup de grace, Ben Sasse will whisper his deep concerns into an empty coffee can. It’s always nice to get mentioned by a famous person, even if only to acknowledge that posts, like all works of art, are useless.
After posting my Calm Twitter extension to Projects, I figured I ought to make one for MetaFilter as well. Briefly, it is a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that guides you through a deep breathing exercise before confirming that you really want to submit that comment. Example GIF of it in action. It appears the official Ask Metafilter Twitter feed is everything posted, but it looks like the official Metafilter Twitter feed is most-popular. Unofficial ones set up by someone are deprecated from November 1, 2016. Are there any official or unofficial Twitter feeds that post everything posted to various Mefi subsites, including Projects, FanFare etc.? Would such channels pose a strain on the servers? Possibly could these be a pony request if no such thing currently exists?
Over on the #WomenBoycottTwitter thread, folks are discovering, rediscovering, and, more importantly, signing up for Mastodon, the open source social network. [more inside]
I'm wondering if there's any interest in marking links to Twitter in the same way that we already mark links to Youtube, so that people who want to avoid them can do so more easily. [more inside]
Since tweets are being linked to or quoted more often than before, especially in the politics threads, I think there is a need to come up with a way to standardise these quotes/links. It could be either just a preferred in house convention or an addition to the buttons that are there below the comment box. Might also need to consider how to quote a thread of tweets or multiple tweets. What does MeFi think?
For the past week or two, anytime I try to click on a link to Twitter while reading Metafilter on my phone, I get an error message. I can access Twitter directly. What gives? Anybody else have this problem?
There are a lot of links to tweets where the link text is the text of the tweet. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate not having to click a mystery link to find out what it says, and I understand that we want to cite our sources, but it's annoying to click something expecting to read about some topic and find that I've already read everything there is to read. Could we have some sort of post-link marker to indicate that clicking the link will take you to a tweet that says exactly what the link says? Maybe [tw] or [twpic] or something if the tweet has no other text but some multimedia content? [more inside]
According to Social Explorer, there are 230 Mefites on GitHub and thousands more on Twitter. While MetaFilter Chat is a great institution, I’m curious if folks would be interested in having a chat community on Gitter as well - it’s a sort-of-Slack that uses Github and Twitter credentials for validation. (This is quite definitely fixing a problem that doesn’t exist, but sometimes asking about those is a way to find out that they do.)
The formatting of the story in the How I Quit Spin post drives me up the wall, and I propose that we should avoid linking to stories formatted that way on Metafilter. [more inside]
Podcast 103 talked about doing a MetaFilter Twitter wordbot jam thing of some kind and I think that would be super fun. [more inside]
There are lots of Twitter links all over Metafilter these days. I'm not complaining, but I don't have a Twitter account. Is this why I can't access any of these links? [more inside]

I'm pretty sure it's one of the unofficial Twitter accounts, but does anyone know what happened to the @askmetafilter feed? It looks like it stopped updating on the 5th. This feed was nice to have since it used the question title as the tweet rather than starting with the question itself like the @mefigreen feed. Thanks all.
I've recently noticed that my most recent Tweet is no longer showing-up on my profile page. Checking around, it seems others' profiles are similarly affected. Is Twitter blocking access?
So I know there have been other MeTas about finding each other on Twitter and how the social explorer isn't so great for that, since there are too many of us and there's no way to tell who's active, etc. BUT I just saw that Twitter expanded their Lists feature to allow 5000 per list, and I went and checked the social explorer and there are only 3300 mefites who've posted their Twitter accounts... Tweeted by User Number One himself, a creation of Matt Round: Meta Mitchell & Webfilter, pairing a Mitchell & Webb sketch to almost any (every?) Metafilter post topic.
Is there a list of official twitter feeds? Failing that is there a list of decent unofficial ones? I have discovered #metafilter which appears to be an official occasional 'best of', #mefiblue and #mefigreen which seem to be unofficial.
Apologies if this has been asked before, but is there any easy way of discovering which Mefites are active on Twitter (easier than checking 10,000 user pages)? [more inside]
Is the Twitter section of the personal profiles broken for everyone, or just me? If it's for everyone, maybe the time has come to eliminate it rather than try to keep it working.

Pretty sure an admin is not responsible for this. But: can anybody explain the existence of the MetaWTFilter twitter account? I'm guessing at this moment that it is not spam as it would be following more than 5 people if it were.

MeFi's own Adam Savage ("MOAS") gave us a very cool shout out to his 15 million Twitter followers, saying "Awesome links, excellently moderated discussion. My favorite community of balanced, reasoned debate is www.metafilter.com." And in response to another tweet asking about Reddit, MOAS replied that of course he still reads Reddit, but "for reasonable debate, I far prefer MeFi.". [more inside]

Is there any plan, project or brain storming about bridging MetaFilter with Twitter and/or other instant messaging services? Not a "feature request" because I have no idea what it could be, but Twitter is becoming my first surface signal toward content on the Web and it would be interesting to bring some Mefi content to this surface.)
