MetaFilter was offline from around 9:45 PM Pacific Time to 4:00 AM Pacific Time. A hard drive failed in our database server, taking some of the database with it. We were able to restore from a backup that happened at 7:40 PM Pacific. So we lost data during those two hours. We apologize for that, the long downtime, and the bumpiness as we get things running again. [more inside]

There was a comment that I had seen within the last 2 years(?) that outlined a pretty specific plan for buying a used car so as to maximize value and minimize ripped-off-edness. I've tried to find it and I thought it might be this but it doesn't seem long enough or have enough favourites. Can anyone help me out? [more inside]

This is pretty strange and we've gotten 3-4 reports of members not being able to load anything on www.metafilter.com (ask, metatalk, everything else works) in just Google Chrome's latest version (Firefox/Safari work fine), on OSX. Anyone have any ideas what could be going on? [more inside]

Thanks to pb for the Ajax updates on threads. Otherwise I suspect that the election thread would break Metafilter tonight with reloading. I've already seen a JRun error or two.
