Wherefore art thou metafilter music? September 22, 2005 9:14 PM   Subscribe

Is anything ever going to happen again with metafilter music? There are a lot of musicians on this site, and I'm pretty sure that a lot of people are unaware of it.

Also, when is the metafilter projects site going to launch?

You gazzumped me. I've been wanted to post some ideas about metafilter music for a while. There are so many musicians around here, and it should be made better use of.

Why not make it a weblog-style format like Metafilter, Ask and Meta? Users who have new songs can post links to them and receive comments. It would be a great resource.

Another idea I've been playing with - doing it that way might discourage some people from posting their music because of bandwidth considerations - post an MP3 and immediately have a few thousand Metafilter users download it. How about an option for users who want to post music to pay a bit of money for bandwidth, and have the MP3s hosted here instead?

Wow, I didn't know about this. Very neat.

I'm actually scrapping the server that the music stuff is on, so I'm not sure what will happen with it. As it is/was, it is using an entirely different system to stream music and lacked any sort of membership functionality. I'll have to rethink and retool it into something else. I know of one cool music community system I could try incorporating into mefi's user system, which would allow song uploads, remixes (and tracking remix history) along with comments and ratings for uploads.

The projects site needs just a few hours of work and I haven't had the time for it in the past few weeks as I've bought and sold a house and tomorrow I move. Next week should look better.

So much for this: "I wanted to help kick this section off by letting everyone post their best project during the first month, and giving a small award to the project I think most deserves it. I'll give a 1Gb iPod Shuffle to my favorite project mentioned between launch and August 31, 2005, with the winner announced shortly after September 1st."
