Free Weather Underground subscription December 21, 2005 11:27 AM Subscribe
FreeStuffFilter: I just looked at my subscription-paid Weather Underground page and noticed that the WU is letting me send free 1-year memberships to anybody I choose. I've already sent these to my family, and the WU keeps giving me more, so if anybody wants one, ping me and I'll send you one, until I run out or WU decides I've sent enough.
wow. these guys have come a long way from bombing campus ROTC centers.

Well, you know, quonsar... once Dylan went and ruined it with that whole "don't need a Weatherman to know which way the wind blows" thing, it's been downhill all the way.

It doesn't seem this is in keeping with "friends and family", 40 Watt. It was nice of the WU to do this, but I doubt they expected you'd be extending the offer to an entire online community.

Fair enough, Steve... I didn't think it would be an unlimited thing like with Gmail invites. However, "Weather Underground reserves the right to cancel or limit the use of this gift membership program at any time." I figure if they have a problem with it, they'll yank it.

Or, alternatively, I guess if time goes on and the little burning itch on the back of my conscience bugs me enough, I'll pull the plug myself. So far I've only gotten less than ten replies... I figure they can handle at least that many.

And the guilt begins to set in... Have no fears! Your first justification was enough, at least for me.

40 watt: the Weathermen took their name from Dylan's song, not vice-versa. Or maybe I'm misreading your comment and you knew that.

Thanks 40 Watt. It'll be nice having a place where I can load all three cities of our sorta far-flung family. Much appreciated.
And like many other pay subscription companies Weather Underground knows these loss-leader giveaways will generate new business.
I did wonder why the sign up includes the line that you agree you are not a former employee of Weather Underground.

Wow... good thing I didn't send one of those to myself. I used to work for the K-12 educational division of WU way, way back in the day. Made hurricane tracking software on those newfangled CD-ROMs! I had similar thoughts about the loss-leader thing- that's what made me decide that it was OK to send out the invites.
And, mid-- I didn't know that. Somehow, I thought Dylan was commenting on the Weathermen and not vice versa.
