kirkaracha has been doing some fantastic stuff over at SportsFilter. Perhaps some of the changes made there should be considered for implementation on MetaFilter? [mi]

In particular, the comment editing feature he has added seems to be the perfect middle ground for those who desire such a thing. It has a three-minute time limit for edit and so it can really only be used for correcting spelling and such. I'm also a big fan of the alternating colors on comment pages though I'm not sure how that would translate on MeFi's colors. There's a bunch of other things that he has done (like converting comment permalinks into HTML valid forms) that I think Matt is already working on. At the very least, this serves as notice of the great stuff Kirk is up to. Come join us at SportsFilter if you haven't already.

A lot of layout stuff can be done client-side as, for example, GreaseMonkey scripts. Another similar idea that has been proposed is to create a script/extension that colors comments from a selected set of users (i.e. "friends", "ignore" [highlight with the font color, so a comment can be selected to read it or ignored otherwise], ..). This would be similar to the Farky extension from some other site I can't quite remember the name of at the moment.

Pretty cool, and something I've been considering for a while. There are some potential drawbacks, but it's not technically hard to do.
