My father is cool, but is he linkable? December 10, 2006 10:39 AM   Subscribe

My father has done some things that I think would be of great interest to a lot of MeFites. I have no connection to the work other than being related to the fellow who did them. Does it belong in projects, or in the blue?

Projects. Friends and family posts should not be posted by you to the blue.

If you really think it's interesting enough for the blue, send it to another member and invite them to post it if they want.

That's pretty much what projects is for.

Your father in law attempted to poison George W Bush?!?!?

sorry. father, not father-in-law. Man, blew my own damn joke.

phrontist's dad invented the internet - but Al Gore later stole all the credit.

'cept that it has been stated by Matt that projects should be web based.

Find a user whose posts you like, or who might find what your dad did interesting and contact them via email.

The reason people shouldn't post links to things done by people they know is they may not be able to accurately judge the quality of the potential post.

So if my friend has a project that I'd like to pimp, I can post it to Projects? Just checked the FAQ and didn't see that addressed there.

Huh? I thought Matt specifically said Projects was only for projects you yourself have done, not for friends or family.

What dobbs said. It's not appropriate for the blue, but "I have no connection to the work" kind of eliminates Projects from consideration, too, doesn't it?

The original intention for projects was stuff you've done, but posting about your dad's work isn't good for mefi and projects is a much better fit. If it's really good stuff, someone will elevate it to the main site.

phrontist's father should submit phrontist to Projects.

StickyCarpet, if it's web based enough for an FPP, it's probably web based enough for a Project - especially given that the Projects section seems to be pretty much patrolled only for malicious stuff.

So, we can post projects now by other people we know? Does it just have to be family members, or are you opening it up to friends, too? Not being snarky, just honestly curious. I have a couple of pals who've done neat things, and if you're saying that's ok, I'd post their stuff to Projects. Why not?
posted by mediareport at 6:01 PM on December 10, 2006

Well, the original intention of projects was to showcase your stuff, but the side benefit was a "release valve" for all those people wanting to promote their stuff and their friends/coworkers/family's stuff. In that regard (you can't feel comfortable posting the link on MeFi) and you're close to the creator, might as well put it on projects.

Your favorite dad sucks.

What's the threshold for posting something to Projects, anyway? What makes something a "project?" Does it have to be some kind of unique application, tool, or themed web enterprise, or can Mefites just use it to pimp their personal blogs?

IRFH, it's spaghettiFilter. Throw it against the wall and see what sticks.
