daShiv in NYC

DaShiv is coming to NYC (fulfilling my hope). Circa Sep. 15 to 25th. If you don't know DaShiv, he is famous for his amazing knack for stunning professional-grade candid photography, especially in meetup contexts (not that we weren't all gorgeous to begin with). We need to: a) plan one or more meetups around his visit, with the focus being on providing good backdrops for all the pics he's going to take. I suggest at least one indoor location and one outdoor location. b) provide places for him to stay. I can donate floor space in Hoboken for a couple of nights. We need to do this soon so that he can confirm his flight dates and be sure that he won't be left huddled on a grate in Central Park, taking photos of rats.

Indeed he is, and he was my wedding photographer and guest so I will remember him till the day I die. Even after catching him in bed with my wife.

my birthday is the 22nd, although i haven't figured out what my plans for that event will be... still I expect to do something for that. I would at least try to swing by a downtown meetup any other night.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling on this, bingo! I'm a bit dubious on how "professional-grade" my meetup photos are, since I'm not (cough) "handicapped" by alcohol during an actual photo gig. Speaking of meetups, I'm thinking a smallish casual meet-and-greet during the week and a big photo bash during the weekend -- how does that sound to everyone?

Fish and houseguests start to stink after three days, so it would be great to find a series of hosts willing to put me up for no more than two or three nights. Passing the hot potato along, if you will. (Plus, it's always fun to meet new people!) My first priority in planning: I'm not sure what the cab/public transit situation will be like over there and I'd like to minimize the inconveniences of my comings and goings for my hosts (and myself), especially to/from LaGuardia. I'm a very no-frills traveler, so minimizing inconveniences all around easily trumps creature comfort concerns to me. Couches, futons, air mattresses, bedspreads on the floor -- it's all good. I'd love to hear from you if you're willing to put me up for a couple of nights (email is in profile).

If you have a beefy computer with Photoshop CS3 (or are willing to have it installed) that I can hijack for a day after the meetup to do photos, that'd be especially great!

I can't go earlier (because of the lead time required for the freebie tickets) and I can't go later since I have to be in L.A. at the beginning of August to do a wedding. (And I hope I don't wind up on a grate in Central Park for setting the dates arbitrarily like this.) Hope to see you again; this photo of you two was one of my favorites from jonmc's wedding.

May I also add that, as well as being an amazing photographer DaShiv is also one of the most charming, sweetest people I've ever met too. Go to the meetup to meet him, not just to get your photo taken.

Oh, and he's a total babe magnet. That goes without saying.

I'm also pretty convenient to LGA, and I haven't shown up to any meetups for close to a year now, so I guess it's time to crawl out of the woodwork. DaShiv, I'm in Manhattan about 15-20 minutes from LGA and convenient to the M60 or a cab ride, you're free to crash at my place for the first few nights you're here if that works for your schedule.

My apartment is entirely too small to offer even floorspace, but I've a car and proximity to LGA, so if I can be of seeervice as a chauffeur you need only specify where and when. Gmail in profile.

Also, I was at the 79th Street Boat Basin this past weekend and I do not know why we have never had a meet-up there. It is absolutely lovely and certain to be so in NYC in September.

Just sayin'...

Now, everyone start saying how you don't drink above 14th street cause that never happens.

aaww... well now I have to find a way to come :)
as I said the 22nd is my bday so probably busy, and the 19th is a friend's bday so prob also busy.
friday the 21st wld work for me or maybe the following week to accommodate TPS, like wednesday the 26? i have to get up super early to teach ethics MWF this semester, so sunday/tues/thurs i am out early.
I still vote downtown because I'm lazy and cheap (that's my self-deprecating way of saying "living on a grad student/ adjunct teacher's income")

Thanks for your offers of lodging, everyone! Wow, so much love from NYC -- I'm truly honored. Please check your emails if you haven't heard back from me yet.

I mentioned that it would be nice to have a small meet-and-greet during the week so that I can learn some names and faces before the big weekend gala. For those of you who can't make it until later on in the month though (TPS, Stynxno, kkokkodalk, piratebowling, etc), if you would like to plan something afterwards as well (perhaps on the 25th/26th), I'll definitely show up. I think I'll leave the planning on that to TPS. :)

bingo: For the big weekend bash -- since a couple people have mentioned schedule conflicts on Saturday, can you plan for Friday night (Sept 21st)? Don't worry about the lighting or the backdrop since my (alleged) magic camera will take care of that; I'd just like to try to accommodate people's location needs as best as possible. We may need to start early and run late (and monopolize a lot of space) if there's a big turnout and I have tons of faces to shoot. Thanks!
