Dates on old posts December 20, 2001 9:09 AM   Subscribe

There doesn't seem to be any way to tell exactly when an old thread was posted. The original FPP has a 'time posted' tag, and the comments all have 'day' tags, but there's no year listed anywhere. (more inside)

The reason I mention this is because I had an idea for an FPP so I did a search for it. It had been posted before so i dropped the idea, but it got me wondering if there's a time period after which it might be ok to repeat a post. As it stands now, there's not a good way to tell how long ago the original was posted. Granted, it wouldn't be too hard to guess at this point, but the longer mefi is online, the harder it will be to tell.

The year shows up on thread pages, at the top only. Look up above on this very page, this MetaTalk thread is from December 20, 2001, this post from MetaFilter is from two years ago.

I didn't want to add the year to all comments, because of the repetitious visual clutter (it doesn't change much, overlap from one year to the next on a single thread is rare).

ahh, that clears it up. I guess it was too big for me to see.

Also, when doing a search, I report the year in the results, but for the most part the year doesn't show up here.

Matt- This is a very small bug, so I thought I'd bring it up here rather than in its own thread: The date at the top of A Day Without Weblogs (Dec. 1, 2000) reads "Dec. 1, 2001." (Though the date is correct further down the page.) It might reduce some confusion in the future to change it.

It says 2000, not 2001 for me. Odd.

You want small bugs? There was no 8th September 2001, but there were two 9ths. Something to do with posting at midnight your time.

I mention this despite it drawing attention to my 'Only one comment' post, made at midnight on the 8th, which somehow hijacked the whole of the day and turned it into an advance 9th.

I have a screen capture of the Day Without Weblogs thing here. WARNING: It's a geocities thing; if it doesn't work, I can email it to you.

I'm running IE6/Win2000.

Arco: You're looking at today's date, not the post's date. (Notice how it's December 21, 2001.)
