I'm curious as to why this was deleted
I've had my share of posts deleted, and usually I understand the reason... this FPP, not so much... It seemed like a topic worth discussing.
Some feedback would be useful...what do you all think ?

The discussion wasn't a good one, and neither was the link.

It was a single link blog post to a long-shot idea for a vp candidate in the US presidential race which is like esoteric times four. Maybe you want to try posting it over at politicalfilter.com?

It's a single link, op-ed, open letter, US election filter which is reason enough. Metafilter shouldn't be for "lets talk about Obama's VP options".

Thin.
I would have left it as there was enough interesting stuff not all over CNN to justify it, but I have no quibble with its deletion either. Also, the whole site has been lacking in any interesting links for the past few days, or few at least, so that it is judged against a bleaker background.
I just hope that when Obama does pick a running mate that we get more than a single link CNN post about it. I am not looking for some silly seventh grade research post with the first five Google links, but perhaps we might get the news and then a few erudite analysis links about the the pick....

Really? Caroline as VP or just the veepstakes thing in general? Cause there are like 80 jillion places to talk about that. And it's been a boring conversation everywhere I've seen it so far.
How about we hold off till McCain picks his VP next saturday and we can do a two-fer.

Michael Moore always presents nuanced, well thought-out ideas that are never designed to instigate, lampoon, or otherwise reek of horse shit, and instead prompt a calm, delightful exchange of ideas that educate everyone who takes part. The link to Michael Moore is reason enough that this FPP should never have been deleted. The mods have, once again, gone too far.

Complaints 'bout deletions, arguments 'bout the polls
Down below in the textbox, I typed a clever insight
My mouse grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
cortex deleted my post
I heard jessamyn yell
And I was thinking to myself,
’this could be heaven or this could be hell’
Then mathowie stepped in with the banhammer raised
There were comments calling me a troll,
I thought I read them say...
Welcome to the hotel gonna scorn ya
Such a lovely site
Such a lovely fight
Plenty of room at the hotel gonna scorn ya
Any time of year, you can find it here
This thread is tiffany-twisted, it's got the Metatalk bends
There are a lot of snarky, snarky folks, that we call friends
How they post before thread-end, thread ain't closed yet.
Some posts to remember, some posts to forget
So I emailed mathowie,
with my 'WHAT THE FUCK’ whine
He said, ’we haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen ninety nine’
And still those Mefites are posting from far away,
Hit the site in the middle of the night
Just to read them say...
Welcome to the hotel gonna scorn ya
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They're livin’ it up at the hotel gonna scorn ya
What a great big mess, bring your snarkiness
Hurf durf butter eater,
Commenting PUI's not nice
Jess said ’we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
And on mathowie's website,
Arrange meetups in the park
We drink and we make shoutouts,
But we just can’t kill the snark
Last thing I remember I was
Closing my brows0r
I had to click my history back
To that site I knew before
’Relax,’ said the night mod,
The site's programmed to receive.

People have covered it pretty well; Michael Moore writing up some speculative attention-bait is just pretty thin material for an FPP, however interesting the let's-ignore-Michael-and-talk-politics discussion that could come out of it might be. We're gearing up for what will in all likelihood be a real mother of a third act in this race, and previous election cycles on mefi have shown a tendency towards fast-and-heavy posting in a way that degrades somewhat the idea of filtering content that's a big part of what the front page is ostensibly about.
The last couple weeks (and to a degree the months before that) have shown the same sort of phenomenon with the Olympics. We've had a lot of posts about the games, specific events, China, controversies tied to all of the above, etc. A bit of an uptick in posts on the topic is one thing, and I don't think anybody reasonably expects that not to happen, but there's also been a number of not-that-great posts as well, apparently motivated more by it being The Thing To Talk About than by people seeking out really interesting web stuff on the topic or putting togehter really quality posts on the subject.

Why'd you make this thread? The answer was IN the link you left. Heck, if I bothered to make a MetaTalk thread every time I felt short-sighted by the Powers That Be... well that doesn't happen as often as it use to.
But now that you bring it up.
Mary Lou Retton is a beautiful, intelligent, inspiring woman who has done great things for charities and furthering a positive outlook upon America in the eyes of the rest of the world. Also, when she was competing for the Olympics some twenty odd years ago, she actually looked her age.
See, Jessamyn? It was funnier without the soulsapping political correctness. I would expect a more open mind from one of your stature and influence.
The more rules you lay down, the more you think you need.

I can't help but think this must be about something else. How have I offended thee, oh great ones?
I think the double-whammy there was about bad luck, basically: Jess' comment was up when I started writing, and I was in too much of a hurry to check for preview. Had I seen it, I wouldn't have posted—not aiming for a pileon effect, I promise.
Your comment was tasteless and annoying and got flagged a bunch. Comments like that stand a good chance of getting deleted. There's no "something else", and the fact that crap comments have gotten through the filter in the past is not only not a meaningful objection to a crap getting deleted this time, it's kind of one of those historical ugly things about metafilter that partially informs removal.

ZachsMind: "I've said far worse before, and others have said and done far worse in these forums before now. I find it subjective of the two of you to be picking on me now regarding something so blatantly insignificant. Help. Help. I'm being repressed."
For fuck's sake. What will it take for some folks to realize the very simple fact that MeFi at large doesn't want your insignificant "jokes". Hey, hey, I'm being ironic! Only a sexist shit would say something this dumb!
You're not being repressed. People flagging you aren't silencing your unique brand of satire. Your insignificant joke just isn't appreciated. We would rather you didn't tell us how fuckable you think someone is, regardless of the lulz. We would rather have women feel comfortable participating in the community than protect your freedom to make a joke. Simple as that.
DON'T TELL US WHETHER YOU WANT TO FUCK SOMEONE OR NOT! IT'S REALLY THAT EASY!

PeterMcDermott: "Damn, I wish I had a MeFi at large opinion detector too."
Yeah, that would be pretty useful. There should a way that users could mark what they like and don't like. Or, heck, maybe even an entire subsite dedicated to talking about what we want and don't want on the site. I bet that would give you a pretty good idea of opinion at large.
At the very least, there could be some written guidelines. But I guess we're all left to hopelessly post in a vacuum. Who knows, maybe I used one of the secret words in this comment that will lead to my banning. I wish the mods wouldn't run the website like a game of Mao, but what can you do?

I think that people should be allowed to express their opinion of another persons attractiveness. I am fairly sure both sexes have such thoughts and express them. I have in fact been in the presence of groups of women who have colourfully expressed their desire to bed various males. I can appreciate that the lack of gender equality means that these statements are not perceived as overbearing or threatening in the way the proprietal commenting on womens bodies that men are prone to. I can also appreciate the breadth of features that females find attractive in a male seems to be much more, for lack of a better word, interesting than the fairly limited list of features that the majority of males find attractive.
However, I understand that if it is the case that the consensus here is that such comments can make the female members of the community uncomfortable then they should be curtailed accordingly.
