This will...what? November 2, 2008 1:41 PM   Subscribe

I know that "this will wendell" is a (facetious) pun on "this will end well", but what's the origin and significance of this MeFi in-joke?

Does this mean that "wendell" is actually supposed to rhyme with "end well"? 'Cause in my mind, I always pronounced it "wendle".
posted by Phire at 3:40 PM on November 2, 2008

Also, this is totally the first in-joke I watched being created (and damn that's an awkward turn of phrase) and for months afterwards, everytime someone invoked it I got all giddy because dude! I was there when they came up with that! But now it's just sort of overused and lame. Wendell is still okay though.

Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And Summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And oft' is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd:
But thy eternal Summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou growest:

So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

the origin and significance of this MeFi in-joke

The significance is that when "This will not wendell" is written for the nine billionth time, this and all other universes will vanish.

I guess more of a Spoonerism. "you hissed all my mystery lectures," said the history teacher to the truant student.

*raises hand* Okay, it's me. But just because my last name rhymes with Hitler, but with two t's (which IS worse).

Does this mean that "wendell" is actually supposed to rhyme with "end well"?

Nope, just pure anagrammage. That's the weird thing about the written word; sometimes you ignore what the words sound like, sometimes you can't.

I miss oneswellfoop.

Me too, but I still blog at this newly forged, egomanically eponymous address. And thanks for giving me an excuse to self-link it here. Bwahahahaha. That said, if I ever get up the energy, OneSwellFoop will live again in a form that will amaze some and make others say "he fucked up again". Watch for it @Projects.

We have always been at war with Wendell.
Well, ever since he spammed us, anyway.

(1) I have apologized for that more times than the number of email addresses on the list.
(2) Remember, I still have the list. Bwahahahaha.

I tried mail goggles once, but all that happened was that a bunch of innocent emails started looking as if they were full of salacious & suggestive subtexts. Oh, and the senders' thumbnails became a notch or two hotter.
