slow and steady, man. February 1, 2010 11:29 AM   Subscribe

So I started a Mefi Travel Guide on the wiki, since AskMes about travel are pretty common. I'm going to plug away at this over the next couple of months, but please feel free to contribute. I think it could be pretty neat!

Too bad the travel subsite never really took off.

This is actually a pretty great alternative to the travel subsite. Great idea, liketitanic!

This is good. This is a good idea.

Cool! Just added a whole bunch of stuff and rearranged the layout slightly. I split up the whole USA into separate geographic regions, but if anyone has a better solution feel free to change it again.

Good idea! Makes a lot of sense, since people ask this ALL THE TIME. (You could probably devote a whole wiki page to New York travel questions alone.)

You did good kid, real good

Please get started on this ASAP.

I can add my travel questions, once the geographical taxonomy is in place.

Which gets me thinking - are we prepared for the wiki editing battles that will surely take place?

For example, constant deleting, reinstating & re-deleting of Israel & Palestine, respectively.

And the Turks will keep trying to get their country included in Europe, instead of the Middle East. Old Europe will do everything possible to block this.

Meanwhile, in North America, the Canadians, Mexicans, Guatemalans, and other miscellaneous nationalities will push to either have their own top-level listing with the USA, or else slot the US under a general North American zone.

I make close to 60 percent of my travel-related decisions based on reading Ask Me backlogs so this will be much appreciated and bookmarked by me.

Just added a bunch of Spain related questions. Feel free to reformat or subdivide as necessary/desired.
posted by haveanicesummer at 12:49 PM on February 1, 2010

I don't know how much the admin team likes this, but if someone were to either submit a question under the Travel category or click on it through the AskMe front page, would it be worthwhile to put the little bar on the top of the page with a link to the wiki?

This is an excellent idea.

I've added all the Iceland questions I could find.

I like how New York has sort of reserved a table but hasn't actually bothered to show up.

But still very cool.

I don't think anyone needs to ask another New Zealand question again.

I feel like linking to This is My Milwaukee but it seems like the effort here is to actually provide travel information, not scare people away, so I'll abstain.

You forgot this clusterfuck: What do you hate about New Zealand & its related MeTa.

Hey liketitanic, you forgot the Southeast. Hello New Orleans! :)

I don't think anyone needs to ask another New Zealand question again.

But I was going to use my first AskMe question for a skiing in New Zealand query!!!

I still might.

Calling librarians: how would you categorize road trips?
posted by one_bean at 6:27 PM on February 1, 2010

Or multiple country Asks? I'm working on Scotland, and there are a number of England-and-Scotland questions. A UK category? List in both? What's the preference?
posted by gingerbeer at 6:35 PM on February 1, 2010

I'm no librarian but I'd put questions that cover more than one geographic region in multiple categories, e.g. if someone asks about both Uganda and Latvia, put the question in both categories.
posted by Kattullus at 7:04 PM on February 1, 2010

Brilliant.

I've added both Ireland and Northern Ireland and grouped the UK together.

gingerbeer: Thanks, Bri

No no, it was entirely self-serving. If England, Northern Ireland and Scotland had become alphabetically separated from each other through the addition of new countries, and poor Wales had been orphaned at birth on end of the list, I would have been very sad.
posted by DarlingBri at 9:10 PM on February 1, 2010

Yes, I realized the problem when I put Scotland next to England, which was out of alpha order, but made more geographic sense.

My edits are pretty self-serving in a different direction, as I'll be in London, Liverpool, and Glasgow this spring.

Thanks for this! I've added links to questions related to Singapore/Malaysia/Asia in general.

I got Africa off to a weak start - sorry, don't have much time at the moment. Also, added Greece to Europe. Nice goin getting this started.

I'm thinking of doing Italy since we're heading to Tuscany in April.

Based on the past questions though, it looks like I could create a separate section called "Venice/Florence/Rome - what should I see and do?"

Don't forget Texas. I know plenty of you are not fans... But, I have seen many posts/questions about Texas. Most of them have been about Houston, Austin, and Dallas.
