Pony request: Can we add the inline Youtube feature to all subsites?

Thanks, cookies, and salt-and-pepper pistachios for sustenance during discussion are provided.

Yes, and also 'recent activity'

Please do! There are plenty of times I've been reading an AskMe question asking for, say, music suggestions, and it would have been great if all the answers pointing to tracks or music videos on YouTube were identified and viewable in the page.

msconduct: "pleasegodno, pleasegodno, pleasegodno .."

You know she's just talking about the little "play" icon that brings up a YouTube overlay, right? Not an actual embedded player. And if you don't like the icon, you can disable it in your preferences.

As far as I know we still don't have any plans to, no. I know this has come up a couple times, this may or may not be the most recent.

ok, i take it back. if youtube won't die, at least it can be relegated to a little icon.

Aside from the blue, which other subsite would need to link to youtube?

AskMe, Projects, Music, and maybe MeTa.

(You know, for video recipes.)

How frequently do people currently post links to youtube from askme, projects, music, and meta? I'm probably wrong, but it seems like a rarity in all cases except the blue, where it's rampant.
posted by crunchland at 10:34 AM on June 26, 2010

Frequently enough for it to have come up in MetaTalk a number of times. Anyway, it's apparently not gonna happen, why are you playing dumb like this? Lose your imagination somewhere along the way?

There's no need to be snotty about it. I was just asking a question.

carsonb, go have a cup of tea and sit on the patio or something. Chill. It's not a big deal, really.

I'm sorry for being snotty about it. You're right, that was wrong. My snottiness circuit just gets shorted by questions asked without any forethought whatsoever.

Results for "youtube.com" in the various subsites (the vast majority of which are HTML links to the site):

Metafilter: 7,748 posts, 43,394 comments
AskMefi: 964 questions, 19,057 answers
MetaTalk: 57 posts, 4,282 comments
Projects: 86 posts, 17 comments
Music: 164 posts, 408 comments
Jobs: 2 posts, ??? comments (looks like there's a glitch here -- it says 43,394, same as Mefi)

I'd say there's a strong argument for adding the player to AskMe, as it links to YouTube in the comments almost half as much as Mefi does.

Probably 95% of the AskMe ones are "can you identify this song?"
posted by desjardins at 10:55 AM on June 26, 2010

I don't understand the argument for not doing it in the slightest.

Bring back images! We need more threads with pictures of chicken fucking.

carsonb, you are a delight to me most of the time, but if you're apologizing for being snotty this is a weird way to do it.

Let me try again.

crunchland, I'm sorry without qualification that I responded to your honest questions snottily—my response contained an inappropriate and unnecessary addendum. I'm also sorry for apologizing weirdly. I hope in the future I can express the respect I have for you as a MeFite even in disagreement.

Many to most of the askme ones are where people are looking for music and playlist suggestions, and I for one would find it pretty damned handy there.

Does YouTube link to MetaFilter? Well then...

I was going to write:

I do not oppose this pony, but I don't understand the need for it either, so will abstain, but figured I'd figured I'd allow real discussion to form. Now that it has, I don't get it.

Since it's a preference you can toggle on and off, I can't see a reason to be opposed to it. If there a coding issues or some other drawback I am missing, that's cool. It's probably linked in cortex's link. Off to read that now.

From a user perspective : why would you argue against it? Its not like you are obligated to watch any of said youtube videos, nor is there likely to be a small army of people who have been holding back their music-recommendation-questions/requests until the feature comes in.

I don't know anything about it from a site-design/mod perspective; is it a big job incorporating it?
posted by mannequito at 12:47 PM on June 26, 2010

also, I don't spend much time on the Music section of Metafilter, and am surprised to learn that there is no inline youtube feature there. Don't people make videos to go with their music from time to time?
posted by mannequito at 12:48 PM on June 26, 2010

It's already a user preference -- "Display YouTube Video inline?" -- that preference does not specify on MetaFilter only, so it a new user would not have any reason to think it would not be inline on all the MeFi sites.

So maybe that preference should read "Display YouTube Video inline on The Blue only."

Rhaomi's comment makes it pretty clear that this'd be a good thing to add to AskMe, at the very least.

We demand change! We are also likely to resent it!

I think this is something we are going to do.

I always click out of inline YouTubes so that I can read the comments. Before this was simply a bad habit, but now that the comment voting has been fixed there's sometimes useful context there.

we should now have the inline youtube player everywhere, let me know if it's not working somewhere.
