Mefi Fantasy Football August 24, 2010 12:31 PM   Subscribe

Metafilter Fantasy Football is open!

It's back and bigger and better than ever! Yahoo league #578681, password is in my profile. Live draft on Sunday, September 5, at 11:00 a.m. Pacific / 2:00 p.m. Eastern. Draft day and time are negotiable if there's an outcry.

All Mefites are welcome--old-timers and newcomers alike. We can increase the number of teams if demand warrants it.

Thanks to commissioner mudpuppie and former commish reenum, the Roger Goodell and Pete Rozelle of Metafilter fantasy football.

Is it somehow different from this meTa?
posted by rtha at 12:49 PM on August 24, 2010

Yes, rtha, the previous one is a pick 'em league (i.e., you pick the winner of a real-life game). This is different and much awesomer.

Sorry I won't be able to participate this year. Last year I was in three leagues and it was just too much. Have fun guys!

In. Most excellent, my family league isn't running this year, so I've been looking for some others to join.

Joined! Now I just need to think of an appropriate name.

I believe Norfolk Enchance is traditional for these things, drezdn, though admittedly for our sort of football.

To those who have signed up and those who will sign up, could you post your team name here so that we can connect users with teams?

Love,

Different yes. Awesomer is debatable. Although mine is the lazier way to go for sure.

I didn't mean that to sound competitive or disdainful, theichibun. Sorry if it came across that way. I just got carried away by enthusiasm because HELL YEAH IT'S FANTASY FOOTBALL SEASON.

drezdn is managing the "Bean Platers"

And we will defeat you through our super secret strategy of drafting better players than you.

Oh shit, you did not just take my comment seriously. Fuck, I really need to get a British accent or get known as the straight guy or something.

You know what? Somebody hire me as a butler. Then I can go all British smart ass Geoffrey style. That's what I really need.

And some bacon for my salad.

That makes sense, thanks. (I am a fantasy [sport] league ignoramus, obviously.)

Ok, I must be stupid or something, I click on the "Metafilter Fantasy Football" link and get "There was a problem * You are not allowed to view this page because you are not in this league. (Error #152)" and I see nowhere to go from there. Hope me?

I know nothing of football and just last year L-edMFAO upon discovering there was a player who changed his name to Ocho Cinco. I'm considering joining anyways because I've been so hooked on fantasy hockey since being introduced to it a few years back. Has metafilter ever done a fantasy hockey league? Cuz I'd be all over that, too.

I'm Streets Ahead!

I've never played in a league with penalties for missed FGs before. I wonder if that'll make a big difference.

Having never really followed baseball and never played in any fantasy leagues before, I won a baseball league I was in populated mostly with huge sports fans and one encyclopedic baseball nerd. I did become obsessed with it though to the point where Baseball Tonight became my favorite TV show. And I checked the Yahoo expert articles like crazy. Fantasy baseball really is just too much of a second job. Never doing that again.

Only if you're Mason Crosby or Scott Norwood.

Me neither, but I thought it would be interesting to try. I can quash that rule if everyone hates it.

I'm the Box Jellyfish.

After a few years, I've started to run out of names with 'box' in them.

Watch out for The Tumbleweeds. You're all going down!

Is there going to be a cap on the number of teams?
posted by elder18 at 3:33 PM on August 24, 2010

Number of teams is currently set at 12, but can be increased if the league fills up but people still want in. (Don't think this has been a problem in past years.)

I'm also kinda stoked to have a reason to keep my dead yahoo mail account alive. Yahoo is what it is, but free fantasy sports, hell yes, it comforts me.

You know what? Somebody hire me as a butler.

I will pay you in weekly songs about your butling. You will express disdain at this arrangement, but with a cool posh distance that suggests to us both that you are fundamentally resigned to the fact that, as with all things, you will forbear this with humble aplomb and restrained elegance.

Also you will be a trained field medic and will never reveal my secret identity.

Throw in a meatball sub a week and I'd totally do that.

Ok, I've been watching about as much football as I have time for since the late 70's so I should be covered there but I've never been in a fantasy league before so I've got 11 days, 3 hours, and 38 minutes to get my homework done. I'll be raining terror and beer as Winnipeg Bomby.

I upped the number of teams to 16. If anyone thinks we need to adjust roster positions to account for the increased number of teams, let me know.

Awesome! If I can get about a dozen more suggestions, I'll change the name of the team every week.

In previous years, I've been the Box Cutters, the Box Socials, the Box Turtles and probably a couple I'm forgetting. And I'm the Lighthouse Hotboxes in the Metachat league this year.

I suggest dialing back the 2 RBs to another flex if we get sixteen, or maybe that discussion should happen on the league page? Woot! Sixteen is a perfect sized league.
posted by rainbaby at 4:22 PM on August 25, 2010

Let's have league discussions on the league page. BTW, I agree. With all the RB committees, it'll put too much of a premium on RB's.
posted by reenum at 5:19 PM on August 25, 2010

From urbandictionary.com:
-Box and Whisker Plot
-Box Banger
-Box Blast
-Box Burglar

Other less profane suggestions:
-The Boxes
-Flower Box
-Moving Box

The possibilities are endless if you expand into synonyms for box.

The discussion about number of RBs has been moved to the league page. Please chime in there. I'd like to make any changes by 5:00 Pacific on Friday. Thanks!
