How to search favorites for posts/comments by a certain user April 27, 2011 7:07 PM   Subscribe

Is there a way to search my favorites for comments I have favorited by a specific user?

Normal text search of my favorited comments only brings up comments in which a username is mentioned in the text, not comments made by that user.

(For example, if I wanted to find comments I have favorited by mathowie, is there a way to do that? Right now the search function, applied to my favorites, only brings up comments in which the word "mathowie" occurs.)

I don't see a way to get the information I'm looking for from the site you linked. (Possibly I am missing something obvious.)

Okay, this is really, really cool. Although my mind must be going. I don't even remember making some of those posts.

Wow, that's great, thank you for showing me how to do that. I had been thrown by the wording of the input fields and didn't realize such a search was possible! Thanks!

I also thank you for pointing this site out to me.

The nifty infodumpster is Combustible Edison Lighthouse's project. I don't remember seeing a MetaTalk thread announcement either, but it looks like he introduced the infodumpster in this earlier MeTa thread about favorited comments/infodump data.

Is there a way to see who has "given" the most favorites sitewide? Tried to use the infodumpster but I'm a tad fried this morning.

Does anyone else wake up with a tingle of anticipation at checking in first thing to see what you might have missed overnight? Then I discover, and I mean EVERY TIME, that someone has posted a new way for me to spend MORE time looking at info in new and unusual ways. So for that...thank you (and my job officially hates you).

Interesting that the people most likely to favorite my comments are also likely to be geographically close to me (but we haven't met). Perhaps a meetup is in order!

I know we don't have the lat/long data in the Infodump for good reasons, but it would be kind of neat to study this effect. Is it just a population density effect? A time zone effect (in which case you'd expect it to correlate strongly with longitude but not latitude)? A language or cultural similarity thing?

I think in my case it's a function of posting a lot in the same threads that are directly relevant to our geographical area.

Nice tool, which I had no clue existed.

Though non-obvious at first where you can enter stuff.

Well, I discovered there are basically no patterns regarding who I favorite or who favorites me. Which is strange as there are plenty of usernames I tend to associate with people whose comments I especially tend to like.

You know what's fun? Find posts in MetaFilter where the deletion reason contains fuck. I shouldn't like irritated mod outbursts so much, but I do. I'm a bad person. But now I have my favorite deletion reason:

I don't even know where to begin here. Fuck it, I'm gonna go play sega

Another cool thing is that, for people who would like to see a deleted threads blog for AskMetafilter (like the one that already exists for Metafilter), you can create a makeshift list yourself by searching for deletion reasons that contain the mods' usernames.

I don't know if they all use the '-- name' convention to sign their deletion reasons now, but searching for deletion reasons containing '--' seems to work nicely to get all of them.

pineapple, there are 5! Including of course your most famous comment with the 5-3-1 method explained.

But I have to admit, I am sort of surprised on that list by some users being lower than I would have guessed, based on how frequently I agree with them. (Though I don't usually favorite things mainly out of agreement, I usually favorite them out of a vague sense that I might want to track the comment down again someday because it explains something well, or makes a point I hadn't thought of, or that sort of thing. So for example if a whole thread like this one will be easy for me to track down, I usually don't bother favoriting individual comments in it.)(Not that I think anyone is actually interested in my rationales for things like this.)

The "-- modname" convention came into being sometime in early 2007, shortly after I came onboard; I think it started happening on askme and metatalk a bit later, but am not sure. Reviewing the deletions chronologically should make that clear, in any case.

The postfix is actually automatically done; none of us type it in ourselves, the system just tosses it on the end of the content of the deletion reason field when we hit the delete button. That's why there's some reasons that have multiple modnames chained together: I delete a post with "this post sucks weenus", system adds "-- cortex", jessamyn goes in and example.coms a url i missed, system adds "-- jessamyn" to the already amended "this post sucks weenus -- cortex" reason.

I try to be good about going in and nixing the previously amended postfixes when I re-delete something but I don't always remember to. I think Matt and Jess are less annoyingly fastidious about that.

Yeah, same here. I picked a few people with whom I typically agree and was surprised not to find my name anywhere near the top of their fans. Basically, I like all of your comments a lot more than these stats would indicate!
