Crap! I fucking missed MetaFilter Bring Donuts to Work Day, even though I declared it myself last year.

I hereby call a rain date -- Thursday June 16th 2011: 2nd Annual Metafilter Bring Donuts to Work day. Let's see those pictures, boys and girls!

Let me restate the Memorandum of Underſtanding:
Whereas:
The imbibing of donuts is known to increaſe goodwill towards fellow men, and
Whereas:
The donut is recognized internationally as the preferred breakfaſt food of kings and commoners alike, and
Whereas:
MetaFilter is a big webſite full of people, some of whom profeſs to the eating of donuts, and
Whereas:
I am hungry for breakfaſt,

Let it be hereby decreed!

It's a typo - Alvy was complaining about you all flaunting your cash. You know, for the monthly 'protection' payments. I'm not surprised to hear you don't know - you're a little behind in your payments. Be careful if you answer the door.

Thanks all - particularly for your moderation in moderating which, despite some evidence in MeTa, is very moderate indeed.

And Meatbomb, it's my understanding that there's not really any such thing as 'days' in the astral plane, what with the lack of stars and planets and whatnot, though there might be what we would consider a single infinitely long day.

Wait... this was declared in 2007, but this is the 2nd Annual? MetaFilter must use a different calendar system.

It's called the Rock Steady Forgetful Calendar.

I'm really quite glad that my little throwaway comment has sparked a bit of a tradition. My own personal tradition is remembering around June 7th or 8th that I should really make a MeTa post about it this year, and then promptly forgetting about it until June 14th. But! Now! I'm putting it on my Google Calendar! So, see you next year.

Mods, thanks for making this the best (and therefore just about the only) place on the Internet that I spend any amount of time. Sorry for all the crap you must have to put up with, and glad the site continues to be successful enough that you can spread the work around to new folks every once in a while. Mazel Tov!
posted by Rock Steady at 1:51 PM on June 14, 2011

A moderator, in Viennese fortepianos from (roughly) between Mozart's and Schubert's time, is a stop (in earlier instruments operated by hand, in later ones with a foot pedal) where little tabs of cloth or leather are inserted between the hammers and the strings in order to produce a veiled, softer and more intimate tone. I like moderators.
posted by Namlit at 2:09 PM on June 14, 2011

So the Rock Steady Year is longer than the Martian year (= 1.88 Earth years) but shorter than the Jovian year (= 11.9 Earth years), which puts it somewhere in the asteroid belt. Which sounds about right for a cloud-based calendar.

Thank you, mods, for putting up with us.

At least be consistent in your criticism. Ass kissing is at least meant to please the recipient; gangbangs are a decidedly different beast.

Let's accept for a minute that Metafilter members are more given to complimenting the moderators than members of other internet communities (or are we comparing with something else?). Metafilter is really quite unique, at least partly because of the way it is moderated. Those of us who love the place are grateful for the people who make it that way. We tend to be pretty complimentary to the Metafilter community as a whole, too.

It puzzles me that you view our choosing to frequently express our good feelings about people and communities as problematic. Being nice to people you like is a good thing, I have always thought. Being knee-jerk critical, not so much.

> Oh no; I'm totally about positive feedback.

Which is why you're so good at it here? According to you, the best way to encourage mefites to behave well...is to tell those of us who are genuinely happy to thank the mods for the good job they do here that we're a bunch of brown-nosing sycophants (redundant, yeah, okay) when we do so. It's pointing out the obvious, but positive feedback != insulting people.
