You put the picture somewhere else and link to it. There's no way to host the picture here on AskMe itself. posted by Chocolate Pickle at 10:40 AM on February 15 [1 favorite]
I don't believe so, no; inline images were disabled for security reasons long ago. The standard practice is to upload it to Flickr or Imgur or Photobucket or what have you, and link to it in your question. posted by Johnny Assay at 10:42 AM on February 15
Yeah, there's no way to host an image directly on the site. Uploading it to your own webspace if you have some, or to one of the various free image hosting sites, is the way to go; you can then link to the image in your question or answer. posted by cortex(staff) at 10:49 AM on February 15
I've said it before, but I really do think MeFi hosted images for AskMe are the way to go. Relying on third party hosts just gets us a lot of questions with dead links down the road, limiting AskMe's utility as a resource.
Then again, I'm not the one who would have to deal with the moderation and legal issues that may arise. posted by ODiV at 11:00 AM on February 15 [4 favorites]

Yes, there is a way, though it is neither easy nor certain.
You must spend several years as a valuable, levelheaded contributor to MetaFilter, become a moderator, and then one day, when no one expects it, abuse your mod powers to insert an img tag on AskMe. posted by jedicus at 11:44 AM on February 15 [7 favorites]
"Just a basic image hosting feature" sounds like such a simple feature, but it kind of a minefield to get right in a way that's better/easier than using a third-party service and copy/pasting a link into your post. posted by usonian at 11:50 AM on February 15 [1 favorite]

Of these three, imgur doesn't require that you have a preexisting account (or create one for the occasion) before you can upload your pic. Just go to imgur.com, click the "Upload Images" button, follow the prompts. When you can see your image on imgur make a note of the URL and use that in your askme post. posted by jfuller at 1:06 PM on February 15 [1 favorite]
Something else to consider when choosing a third party photo hosting service is that some of the more socially-oriented ones are blocked by Websense at draconian places of employment. Flickr is blocked where I work, for instance. So although, no, normally I wouldn't ever use my valuable on-clock time to answer questions on the web (and neither should you worker-bee!), I most certainly cannot answer questions predicated on seeing an image hosted on a blocked website like flickr. posted by carsonb at 1:14 PM on February 15

Whereas I think hosted images for AskMe just gets us a lot of issues with intellectual property and a large set of headaches for the mods. posted by DarlingBri at 1:28 PM on February 15

DarlingBri: Yeah, you're right. In theory it would be the same guidelines as for text but in practice it would be more hassle.
It's just my thinking that as much of the question as possible should be on AskMe itself. Maybe that's not realistic, but if question is reliant on an offsite resource to be comprehensible, then that doesn't strike me as a great spot to be in.
It could be that those questions are a tiny minority too, so maybe I'm worried for nothing. posted by ODiV at 3:01 PM on February 15

I wonder if an informal mirroring agreement between metafilter members would help with this. For example every time a link is posted to an image in a question I could make a copy of that image in mitheral.ca/AskMetafilterQuestionImages/YY_MM_DD/######_X where the ###### is the AskMe post number and the Y is a sequential number indicating which image it is in the post.
For example for question 235258 I would copy the images linked to the 13_02_14 folder in the AskMetafilterQuestionImages folder on my server and I would name them 235258_1, 235258_2, 235258_3, 235258_4.
People who are performing this service could be listed on the wiki along with the path to the date folders and it would be easy to browse the images for any particular question. Plus if we all kept the same date/image name format mirroring the mirror for a new mirror would be trivial. posted by Mitheral at 12:43 AM on February 16
