Quit making my pop-up blocker sweat so hard. Come out and say what you want about whatever it is you're trying to tie together; Otherwise you yourself might fall victim to a snarky internet rebuttal of some sort. I'm not saying I'm the one to deliver said comment; Only that I may be the first to recognize such a vulnerability.

Also, I like using semicolons.

However, why are they "semi" when they clearly use more pixel/print space than a regular "colon" i.e. ":". Answer me that; pretentious Victorian-era-illustration-based snark-filtered Onion-esque webcomic!

Because the colon is defined as two points. The semi (half) colon only uses one. Therefore, semi. We are not amused by your intransigence.

The anteater said:
"I don't want no eggs,
Hey man, sin't you got any ants?"
I said "no, but i've heard tell, my friend
That there's a fish in quonsar's pants"
Just then the armadillo
(the one that'd been on my pillow)
Walked into the kitchen and started bitchin'
Said: "this MeTa don't stand a chance".

So I sez to the armadillo:
"Oh wow, so you read Metafilter?"
He said, "yeah, well, every so often,
when I'm feeling a little off kilter"
But then the armadillo and the aardvark
And the anteater all went away,
And I looked around at my empty kitchen and thought:

An elderly man lay dying in his bed.

In death's agony, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies wafting up the stairs.

He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself from the bed. Leaning against the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort forced himself down the stairs, gripping the railing with both hands. With labored breath, he leaned against the door frame, gazing into the kitchen.

Were it not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven. There, spread out upon newspapers on the kitchen table were literally hundreds of his favorite chocolate chip cookies.

Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of heroic love from his devoted wife, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?

Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself toward the table, landing on his knees in a rumpled posture. His parched lips parted; the wondrous taste of the cookie was already in his mouth; seemingly bringing him back to life.

The aged and withered hand, shockingly made its way to a cookie at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked with a spatula by his wife.

"Stay out of those," she said, "they're for the funeral."

Sike!
posted by cortex (staff) at 12:30 PM on September 22, 2008

That was what I called my oldest sister's—and, in the long run, the family's and to a degree the neighborhood's—angry white outside cat. His name was really meant to be "Psyche", in reference to his psychedelic different-colored eyes, but as a seven-year-old I hadn't encountered the notion of psychedelia, and knew of "Psyche!" only by oral tradition.
posted by cortex (staff) at 12:33 PM on September 22, 2008

Understanding came, eventually, but too late; Sike remains Sike, forever, in my mind and heart. He was a good bad cat; rough, a loner, slow to accept affection, a sometimes violent hunter when other animals—cat or otherwise—would move into his territory. He was prone to fights, and came home look bad more than once, but there was a heavy stubbornness about him that seemed to me to convey that he might lose a fight now and then but would win whatever strange war a cat might conceive of in his life and his view of the world.
posted by cortex (staff) at 12:35 PM on September 22, 2008 [1 favorite]

When I was moving through high school, he was moving through old age—I can't recall how old he was when he finally passed away, but he could not have been young and the brutish conflicts that seemed to take up his nights could only have shortened what span he had. He had the look, by the end, of a cat who had somehow cadged a tenth and eleventh life off someone who owed him, and who was taking only marginal care with those.

I remember sitting one night on the back steps of our house, a young tense knot of emotions and hormones and teenaged troubles, and listening to the high school football announcements echoing into the neighborhood air from the field ten blocks away, and petting Sike's taut, boney frame through his matted white-but-for-the-dirt-and-scars fur, and realizing that this cat who wasn't really mine, wasn't really anybody's, wouldn't be around much longer. And I think for the first time, that night, he was my cat, at least for a little while, with all the sadness of impending loss that came with it.

Old Deuteronomy's lived a long time;
He's a Cat who has lived many lives in succession.
He was famous in proverb and famous in rhyme
A long while before Queen Victoria's accession.
Old Deuteronomy's buried nine wives
And more - I am tempted to say, ninety-nine;
And his numerous progeny prospers and thrives
And the village is proud of him in his decline.
At the sight of that placid and bland physiognomy,
When he sits in the sun on the vicarage wall,
The Oldest Inhabitant croaks: `Well, of all ...
Things ... Can it be ... really! ... No! ... Yes! ...
Ho! hi!
Oh, my eye!
My sight may be failing, but yet I confess
I believe it is Old Deuteronomy!'

In my dream I was flying through Portland (does anyone fly through Portland?) and my flight out was delayed by 10 hours so I got in touch with cortex and we got food. I don't remember what we had but, sadly, it was not enormous donuts. Incidentally, this is almost a true story. I had a 12 hour layover in L. A. last March and I went to Venice Beach and hung out for the day and at the end of it met up with klangklangston and he and his special ladyfriend took me to get some good cheap Mexican food.

Bottestrappe is a form of weak molasses-based liquor (a "strappe") that was fermented in a "botte", a Middle English word meaning a wooden flagon, and was a process that could be hidden in places like the pigsty so the sherriff and tax collectors could not witness it. Thus, "to pull oneself up by the bootstraps" actually meant to make money from what we would now term "moonshining".

I see the doubling thing on very large threads. I think it's the query taking so long that something changes between when it starts and stops, and thus the sort order of the queried thread "changes" enough to show up later in the SQL results list in the main RA mega-query. The number of times the comments are multiplied seems to correlate to the number of times the thread itself appears, too.
