Can whoever deleted my comment in this thread explain why it was deleted with no explanation and other similar comments remain?

I haven't been anywhere near that thread except to remove a double-post by nofundy. It wasn't right next to that, was it?

I don't believe so. It was in the top ten replies, I think.

because most of your comments are unfunny one-liners or derails, or copy-and-pasted unfunny urban legends?

Hey! I resemble that remark!

No, that's why my comments are deleted.

What's really bothering you, Matteo? You're biting the heads off everyone today. Maybe you need to step away from the keyboard for awhile.

posted by xmutex at 11:24 AM on March 30, 2006

keswick, I was going to email you about it. You posted something to the effect of "[flagged][noise] you suck and this post sucks"

It was directed at another member, added nothing, and was noisier than the post it was complaining about.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 11:27 AM on March 30, 2006

I've got no problem with those rules, but how about enforcing them equally?
posted by keswick at 11:28 AM on March 30, 2006

Oh, I almost forgot: matteo, you're a clueless douchebag.

So when jonmc spits out 34 comments telling MetaFilter how full of themselves they are with Bill Hicks and it's his self-imposed job to knock him off a pedestal that's AOK? Seriously, this fuzzy line of selective administration in conjunction with the comment under the posting box in the blue is really starting to become comical.
posted by prostyle at 11:42 AM on March 30, 2006

I can confirm that if you write "you suck and this post sucks" it will be deleted; it's happened to me. I still stand by my anti-deletion homies but if there's anything dumber than "you suck and this post sucks" I don't know what it is.

Prostyle - What the heck was that?

Look at what mathowie said. If that's the standard of administration around here it needs to be enforced in more places than within the first 20 comments of an obviously heated political thread.

This fuzzy line of selective administration is what separates Metafilter from so many shit-stain dictatorships on the web. With light moderation comes a measure of inconsistency that is, in my opinion, much preferable to a shrilly, pedantically enforced set of bylaws.

The phrase is "You suck and your post sucks and I hate you over the internet" and originated here . I meant it as a (semi) tongue-in-cheek remark on how absurd this whole thing is while still conveying they inherent sucktitude of a worthless FPP.
posted by keswick at 11:52 AM on March 30, 2006

I think much of human history can be summed up in the idea that people are willing to take a beating as long as they can be assured that their neighbor will get one too.

Thats what I read in keswick and prostyles statements. Or...what cortex said.
posted by vacapinta at 11:54 AM on March 30, 2006

Yeah, take it from me. "Semi tongue-in-cheek" just doesn't convey in straight text messages. (At least, not without an emoticon or two.)

vacapinta: It's Haughey's site; I accept he can set the rules as he sees fit. However, in the interest of basic fairness, I do wish he would enforce them equally. That's all. If you want to read something else in my comment, feel free. You'd be wrong though.

IDOMFP

Ok, that one stumped me. Could you translate?
posted by Gamblor at 12:02 PM on March 30, 2006

prostyle, by the time I saw those comments by jonmc (which got very few flags despite being, I agree, completely derailing and detrimental) they were firmly entrenched in the thread and couldn't be removed without basically having a do-over. As much as I'd like some threads to have a reset button, there was no way to tease apart jonmc's rants from the people replying to him and the posts that were totally on-topic but also about jonmc in part. I know no good way of dealing with stuff like that, but the flagging queue is the first step and email to the admins or a MeTa thread is the next one.

Here.

34 comments in one thread between 9:56 AM and 6:47 PM? Good grief.

There's also the touching-yourself-at-night issue.

On a serious note: have you ever noticed that people rarely (if ever) start MeTa threads asking why someone else's comment was deleted? The value of a comment, and the need for it to receive some sort of Justice, really does skyrocket when it's your own, I think.

They're going to be inconsistent because I can't be everywhere at once. To do this level of consistent perfection you request, I would have to watch every comment fly in, matrix-style to root out each and every lame one. I'd probably need eye drops because I wouldn't have time to blink (comments hit about 1 per second these days).

When I catch lame, empty comments that mock other users (that message is written now in plain text above the posting button), I will remove them. I can't remove each and every instance, but when I see them, I'll ax them. Try not to be too upset when an empty lame comment dies. We're better off for it.

Can I post lame, empty comments that mock other users without specifying their names? What about lame, full comments that mock other users? How about clever, empty comments that mock other users? Are we going to replace the blue with pink? Maybe we can have tea and a teddy bear picnic?

There's no system for realizing when someone else's comments have been deleted. I think it would be a positive addition. Mine are always perfect anyways--nay, normative baubles of steely perfection.

mathowie, why not ban people who make such worthless comments? I'd think you'd eventually get tired of being the little Dutch boy. Such comments will keep coming, faster and faster as more users sign up, until there are consequences for such behavior.

When it happens again and again and again (and again), maybe. Everyone has the occasional bad day, after all.

Then again, it's a fine line between loveable curmudgeon (of which we have more than a few) and disruptive noisemonkey (of which we have some, too). Hard to sort the shit from the shinola at the best of times.
