I believe this AxMe is shilling for her business.

her only other posts of any type were in another greek vacation related askme. the first she recommended the questioner go with her on the vacation. the second she reversed herself and recommended they go with professionals.

maybe it's not banning time, but it's likely time for a warning and a timeout.

Actually the Ask Mefi Guidlines do not explicitly say that you can not promote a commercial activity through a question. Maybe they need to be updated.

I removed it, emailed Janet and I'll try to make the faq more explicit.

I believe this callout is motivated by a spurious desire to have AskMe become completely noncommercial. We all know what this would mean. I vote that someone write a sharply worded letter, address to no one in particular, and then place this letter in an envelope of some sort.

Thank God this was given its own MetaTalk thread! Otherwise some people might have missed it.

#jessamyn: I'll try to make the faq more explicit.

By "faq" I hope you mean Ask MetaFilter Guidelines which is distinct from the FAQ.

When you try to ask a question there is stuff on that page to keep down bad questions and a demand to read the Guidlines page.

A new question asker can read through both pages and not realize that asking a question to promote a business will result in incomprehensible derision.

By FAQ I meant FAQ which is the page that I could edit immediately. I'll see what I can do about the guidelines.

Oh... that, FAQ.

Then again, I just wanted to say hi to Jess and this seemed like as good a pretext as any. Hi, Jessamyn.

What about posts like this one?

What about them? It's nearly a month old. What specifically are you objecting to?

What about the "how many staples get thrown away each year" question?

What specifically are you objecting to?

If you follow the link in the poster's profile, it appears the question was set up to shill their e-book.

What about the children? Has no-one thought of the children?

The AskMe question this thread originally was about was removed for two reasons 1. because saying "who wants to go on a trip with us?" is not what AskMe is for and 2. because it seemed to be a shilll for the woman's business. The two other questions didn't have that problematic first part, though dropkick is on a pretty short leash otherwise anyhow.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:38 PM on November 24, 2006

ugh. "dropkick" is this guy. I'm sure we'll be hearing about him again.

dropkick is on a pretty short leash

Seems like you're giving him a pretty long leash, actually.

Bonus points to anyone that figures out his sock puppet for skirting the askme question limit.

I admit, I don't care enough to actually read the thing, but is it a sexy sexy trip? Are there any 'special' services? Greece, right?

C'mon, it's friggin' Greece!

I say, give him/her a shot. Who doesn't need a vacation? We all saw that Darryl Hannah flick and you know you want to be there.
