We have been praised for 'strikingly literate commentary' March 18, 2003 12:13 PM   Subscribe

Metafilter spotting. I was slow to post this, thinking someone would ahve already picked it up.. while I like the props for 'strikingly literate commentary', the representative link is not *really* representative. (In my opinion)...

I'm verklempt! I'll give you a topic: Metafilter is no longer "Meta" or a "Filter." Talk amongst yourselves.

Have you read this? Or looked at this chart?

"Our site is vehry 'Prince of Tides.'" And Stan Chin? You're like buttah.

I'm not on the chart! I'm hurt.

Economic Left/Right: -4.00
Authoritarian/Libertarian: -3.08

Dude, I'm like Ghandi. That is so weird. I thought I be way more Authoritarian.

But anyway.. I think the link she chose was overly sarcastic in nature to the average thread.

If you're familiar with the blog world, you've probably already seen Metafilter, and you know it's the best place to discuss what's going on in the world (or at least the States) today.

*sigh*

The NewsFilter crowd have already won, haven't they?

Yes.

From the article:

InstaPundit.com: I know, there are a million unknown bloggers out there with just as much to say as the really famous guys, but I'm trying to start the novices off at the top.

Translation: This is a puff piece that took me 15 minutes to write, pay no attention to the fact that I have no idea what I'm talking about or that I don't know what else is out there, I can't be bothered to look.

*sigh*

Can't we take pride in praise offerred? A writer for a (semi) mainstream media outlet just offerred us some major props.

I'm impressed by the fact that, after 3 years, MeFi has refused to jump the shark, at least not according to the press coverage it continues to receive. If everyone else still acts like MeFi is the shit, why can't we?

The X-Men comic book probably reached its peak quality and then jumped the shark back in the mid-80s. Yet it's more popular than ever today amongst the mainstream crowd, with movies and merchandising, etc...

Just sayin'...

Still, you're right--it's another big compliment.

This and the Forbes article really point out that Mefi is perceived (by everyone but Mefites) to have a primary focus on news and world happenings (although both articles also point out the diverse nature of posts). But it has been this way for a long time. I know many of my friends think of news posts and, notably, the funny comments and the informative links in the threads, when they think of Mefi. Some of my first exposures to Mefi were links to news posts sent to me by friends.

Let's face it: Right or Wrong, Good or Bad, much of Mefi's image and popularity has to do with Newsfilter. Again, I'm just sayin'...

Newsfilter
The freedom fries was a double post/update post. With the original one still opened.

This link was informative outside the States.

Poopyhead! Out of today's seventeen posts, we have only two linked to majors (one bbc and one washington post), and the second is going to get nixed because it's a double post. The lone deletion is just repeated sideglob information.

What link do you think would be, then? I wonder what post people would pick to represent metafilter if they could only choose one - not necessarily your favorite post, but the one you think is most representative of whatever metafilter means (to you).

Okay, dammit, that was the community at its best, but it just couldn't be the best metafilter thread.

If this place is anything, it is above both "newsfilter" and "community". We filter the web. Sometimes we do it well, other times we don't. Also, some topics we do much better than others, but sometimes we even do the "bad" topics well. And sometimes we break all the rules and still end up with a memorable and (possibly) moving experience. And there's just no way that all these different perspectives, nuances and outright contradictions can be summed up or explained in just one post.

That's what MetaFilter means (to me).

This thread is what Metafilter is to me. The post itself is intelligent, the comments are well thought out and informed, it points me to new things through the web, and overall it was fun to read. Thats what I think of when I think of Metafilter

Good one, hama7.

Newsblog, Mediablog, Kaffeeklatsch (but never, never, "Coffee Klatch"!!); nobody knows what we are. But, then, as far as I can tell, neither do we. Maybe it's time to update our subtitle? Maybe "Community Weblog" needs enhancing?

What Metafilter Means to Me
by Barry Snorkel, Age Twelve

Metafilter means many, many things to many, many different people. To me, Metafilter means that it is a comunity where people say things that are important. My thesis is that Metafilter is mostly blue, contains interesting links and comments, and sometimes people yell at each other for stuff.
...
In conclusion, what Metafilter means to me is very, very, very hard to say, but it has alot to do with being blue, containing links and coments, and yelling.

true commish, it's more than a single post, isnt it?
who's dammit by the way ?

Philcliff, I had that same thread in mind as a prime example of all the things that are good about this place. It's definitely at the top of my list.

I like making lists of things. I have lists of things all over my house. An old friend used to call me Laura the Luscious List Maker. Which was weird, because I'm not really luscious, and my name isn't Laura.
