Just flag the darn thing. Click click. Now that we're here, though, I'd like to request that "train wreck" be added to the flag categories, please.

Good point. Flagged it myself, and now, I've flagged this post too. But, y'know, I'd prefer a wreck in here than over there.

Can we give it a few minutes, though? I'm at the point of driving slow on my way past with the window wound down, holding everyone up behind me. My mouth might very well be open.

You know, there have been three recent instances where someone went apeshit on the site, then a week later apologized for being drunk. I think this might be a fourth datapoint in the trend.

On a *slightly* related theme -- are FPPs linking to MetaTalk and Ask MetaFilter posts and comments completely out of bounds? I've been sort of tempted by a "best of" post. Same for profile pages. Has it been done?

Two wrecks are better than one.

Three instances of absurd drunken posting in five years? I don't know if that's good or not.

That's completely out-of-control and, no, other people wouldn't do the same thing.

However, the accusation dejah420 made (sincerely, thuogh probably wrongly, I think) against mcgraw is pretty serious, in my opinion (not legall, but morally, I think—we'd all think pretty badly of mcgraw if we believed it to be true); and so his overreaction to it, assuming it was false, is pretty understandable. That doesn't make it right, but if someone falsely claimed I was a stalker or that I tried to sabtotage someone's job, I'd be extremely mortified and generally freaked-out.

I did think it was odd, and interesting, how in the meta thread mcgraw was immediately apologetic and even-tempered and yet, nevertheless, completely went nuts (for no good reason, in my opinin) over dejah420's comments. Although, I wonder if the fact that most of us are pretty familiar with her and know that she's a notably nice and even-tempered person didn't cause us to read her comment more benignly than perhaps we could expect of mcgraw. But the whole thing was sort of weird. McGraw comes off, in the end, as someone with not the best judgment, though perhaps well-intentioned.

On Preview: what ryvar said. Because I'm curious. Or nosy. But I wonder what actually is going on.

The MeFi crowd’s been drinking
And the bar stools are all on fire
And all the newspapers were just fooling
And the ash-trays have retired
And I've got a feeling that the MeFi crowd’s been drinking
It's just a hunch
The MeFi crowd’s been drinking and they're going to their lunch
And the MeFi crowd’s been drinking
Not me, not me, The MeFi crowd’s been drinking

The best part is that no one would ever have seen the accusation until he posted it on the front page, and now everyone knows he's a stalker.

If someone claimed that I was a stalker I think my response would be something along the lines of "Pfffft. Welcome to the Internet." On IRC, regardless of what channel you're in it's pretty common to ask people about their location based on the geographical abbreviations in their hostmask. 'Stalking' on the Internet is like swimming in the ocean. Everything you say can and will be used against you at any time. YOUR COMPUTER MAY BE BROADCASTING YOUR IP ADDRESS - it sort of goes hand in hand when dealing with a medium composed of pure information.

If someone claims I actually attempted to wreck their job (although I've used the threat a few times to shut people up when nothing else got through to them), though, that would be a whole different can of worms. That's money, and money makes things get nasty very, very quickly.

Yeah, it's real 'interesting' - just like how mcgraw posted that turd of an FPP yesterday and then as soon as it got deleted posted a Meta thread about it so we could all discus it some more.

And like E-Double I'm mad
Still knee-deep in the system's shit
Hoover, he was a body remover
I'll give ya a dose
But it'll never come close
To the rage built up inside of me
Fist in the air, in the land of hypocrisy

Yes, there was a mail, purportedly from McGraw that was sent to the company link I used to have in my profile. That it was someone else strikes me as improbable, considering that the email arrived mere minutes after he went off in the *other* meta thread.

However, I'm not going to do the computer forensics that it would take to find a real answer, because frankly it would require a legal discovery from the ISP...which would involve paying attorneys, and it's not that important to me because I own the company and thus complaints about me (and my "use of company time to post pornographic and insulting comments on the internet", and tidbits about my past posting history both here and on my personal sites) mean that I'll just have to discipline myself. (Bad Dejah, no biscuit! A spanking, a spanking!)

That said however, out of respect for Matt and peace on the site, I've removed the verbiage and the link to that disaster of a thread from my user profile. (Although, I did it before I knew he'd published a link to my profile page on the blue....and had I known, I might have just let the stalker appellation stand...cause dudes, that's freaking weird, that is. )

However, as a result of that post, I have decided to remove links to any of my sites where my real name, real location and real identity might be ascertained, and I'll just leave it that way until anonymous hate mail and comments on my sites cease.

Sounds good mr. marx, but allow me to build upon that:

The Mefite has been drinking, mathowie is asleep
And the images weren't Safe For Work, the Jrun has to take a leak
And mcgraw needs a week off, and the frontpage looks like a prison break
And the tagline's out of cigarettes, and the preview button's on the make
And the Mefite has been drinking

And the ponies are all freezing, and the search box's blind in one eye
And he can't see out of the other
And the newbie's got a hearing aid, and he showed up with his mother
And the Mefite has been drinking

As the flag link is a sumo wrestler cream-puff Casper Milquetoast
And the poster is a mental midget with the i.q. of a fence post
’Cause the Mefite has been drinking

And you can't search the archive with a Geiger counter
And she hates you and your friends and you just can't post without her
And the title field is drooling, and the guidelines are on fire
And the newsfilter posts were fooling, and the <10ks have retired
’Cause the Mefite has been drinking

Not me

It even conforms to meter, and in most cases even to rhyme and/or alliteration of the original! I'm such a geek.

So basically Dreamghost, is it would be okay for me to act like a total ass (say, bringing up my dirty laundry in a FPP) and then escape the well-deserved time-out because I should be able to defend myself against accusations of being a total ass for an entirely different reason?

Nah. See you in a week, mcgraw.

Mcgraw may have been an ass but I can understand being desperate to clear one's name. He acted with undue haste and who here hasn't done that at some point in their life?

That being said, the correct thing to do in this situation would've been for him to ask someone on IRC to create a suitable MeTa post for him detailing this explanation. Given the seriousness of the situation and the lack of resulting marring the frontpage I'm sure Matt would have understood circumvention of the post per one week rule in this special case.

Something for people to consider if they ever find themselves in a situation like this.
