Sweet Buddha on a bicycle, it's another IRC-related post. (Don't worry; I'll make it quick and painless.) Most of you noticed in
this thread that most of the old regulars of #mefi moved to slashnet. We've since vacated that channel, as we've set up our own dedicated server at
irc.ieattapes.com, and you're all welcome to visit. Yes, even you.
(No, it's not an 'affiliated' or 'official' channel. No, there is not a dress code. Yes, you may bring food and drink, but ensure you have enough to share with everyone. No liver casserole, though.)

Look, that deleted thread had an interesting Q&A about #mefi where I learned quite a bit. You'll certainly delete this one, but did you even read it before you bombed it?
Bad job. Totally unreasonable.

I've been too busy to hang out on the metafilter irc channel, so I just wanted to say hi to all the cool people there. Is there any way one can access that without downloading an irc client?

I had a crazy idea, just now. How about some sort of tiny advert for #mefi on the metatalk front page some place? I think the channel could (use new blood/be more visible/have rollerskating waitresses).

I know there is a metafilter IRC channel but I am clueless about how to setup and use IRC. Can someone explain it to an IRC newbie?

#mefi has moved!
To avoid prosecution For various reasons, #mefi has
been forced to relocate moved to a new server. The DNS will propagate the domain name shortly but, if you are connecting using the IP address, you need to change it to 207.44.144.7

Alas, there was a critical fact overlooked on the recent hardware upgrade, one which left the server vulnerable to the [sapphire|slammer|SQ hell] worm. All's better now.

The irc server turlyming seems to be down, so come on over to irc.undernet.org channel #mefi.

Ack! The metafilter irc channel is down. How am I ever going to get my fix of mindless chat?

Is Metafilter IRC gone for good?
Is there now a quota of nearly zero on political and geopolitical threads? I never got the memo.

turlyming.com (metafilter.com's primary mx, primary/secondary ns, and #mefi host) suffered a drive failure yesterday. while matt has his bases covered, you may still experience minor delays in ns lookups for metafilter.com addresses and of course, the irc channel is unavailable until i can rebuild the box.

Any sign as to when irc.metafilter.com, irc.turlyming.net will be back up? Anyone want to institute a quick fix in the meantime?

Is the MeFi
IRC chat still in use at all? (server: irc.metafilter.com, #mefi)
I've checked that and the old EFnet #metafilter channel a few times over the past week and no one seems to be hanging out in either.

Oh where, oh where is the mefi IRC channel?
I'm a IRC addict and I wouldn't mind chatting with other mefi members.

it's official, or as far as i can make it: #mefi at 9pm central time or later. we'd love it if you could come by; the numbers who attend the channel are a bit anemic, right now. and, as of this writing, by we i mean "I". irc.metafilter.com, port 6667.

thanks, everyone, who came by #mefi last night. we had 7 or 8 people on at once, which is a new record i think (!). i'd like to ask anyone who has an opinion: should we meet at a specific night of the week (mondays, for example), or should it be open to whenever you would like to come by? it is possible to agree on a specific time (9pm CST, earlier, later...)? what do you guys think?

with the permission of
chrish, #mefi is a reality. head over to irc.turlyming.net, port 6667. if we were to schedule a time to meet, let's say... 9pm CST (7 pacific), but come on by anytime really (i'll be available to get on the channel late most evenings, not that i'm much of a marquee attraction or anything, but it'll be better than watching drywall peel).

Before MeFi goes off line for its
connection upgrade (see side-blog), what's the scoop on an IRC channel, especially after the last shut down? During shutdown, it might ease withdrawal < : ( > and also be interesting in and of itself. And if only I could get Ircle to run on my Mac...

Is there a metafilter IRC channel or Web chat room? A Metafilter IRC channel would be interesting.. like a constant day-time chat show with no host.
Oh well, whether it exists or not, I'll be sitting on #metafilter on EFNet (irc.rt.ru) in this quiet Metafilter downtime!

Well has MeFi had an #
IRC meeting before then, eh? The only thing I insist on is that you 1337153 your name and ASL and post some poetry you wrote when you were 15. Can anyone suggest a network and time? Thanks.

Use IRC? Come join the #metafilter channel on Efnet, to chat with your fellow Metafolks. You'll need an
IRC client, if you don't already have one.
