Optional location flag for AskMe?

I've seen this happen quite a bit, but for whatever reason the penny dropped reading this question posted today--has the idea ever been floated to add an optional location flag to AskMe questions? [more inside]

Two new profile pages options available

We’re rolling out a couple of new profile preferences options today: the ability to make the “Contributions” and “Social” segments of your profile page visible only to logged-in members, and the ability to enter your geographic coordinates but have them not be visible to anyone else. Come on in for some details! [more inside]

reminder to put your location in your question

The answers to this question depended largely upon the location and culture of the asker, yet most of the answers were US-based and thus not that useful. Two lessons here: 1) let's not assume we're all in the US; 2) let's remember to put our location in the question. [more inside]

16.7704, -3.0057

Entering your location (lat/long) in your profile gives a street address in Google Maps when you click on the icon. This seems to be new, and fairly accurate. My guess is that some people do not want others to see this and will want to obfuscate their location. [more inside]

How many Mefite's on the head of a pin?

108 MeFites claim to live exactly here: +47° 25' 56.10", -121° 48' 12.20". Which is, in fact, nowhere. [more inside]

is there a way to search for every MeFiter who has posted to Music, but from a particular city? Seems like if the search terms are not in the post or tagged by the poster, the MeFi search engine doesn't include the user info... [more inside]

Can we add a note to AskMe to mention your location where appropriate?

I've noticed quite a few times people will ask questions over on AskMe about laws or rules about say, taxes or renting an apartment or consumer rights, etc., but frequently forget to mention where specifically they are living, which can make the question very difficult to answer until further info is obtained. Can we add in a note to the AskMe posting page (just like the one that says "Have you searched Google?" etc) saying something to the effect of "Have you mentioned where you live, if it is a question about the law, your rights, etc?"

I'm just a lonely geek...lonely in blue...

What's the percentage of MeFites who have no one nearby? I just moved away from Vancouver (in the interior, Quesnel, to operate my hosting/computer services biz where I actually WANT to live) and suddenly, after updating my long. and lat., I'm all alone!

Is there a way to search members by location?

I swear I remember a way to find users from a specific locale- but I can't seem to conjure up a search-string that will do what I want, which is to find users in and around Munich and Berlin, Germany.

The rasion d'etre of my search is that I've found some 1500 photographs I took there 30 years ago, and I'd like some assistance in determining locations/stories.

Geocoder no good for Canadians

The Latitude/Longitude geocoder linked on the "customize" pages doesn't work too well for Canadians (it thought the city I lived in was somewhere in Alberta), so I found geocoder.ca, which allows more specific lat/long inputs for Canadians. Could we link this off the "customize" page, please?

Nearby Users outside the US?

Has anyone ever come up with a method or numbering scheme that would allow the "Users Near This User" option to work for non-US members? If not, could something be developed? (For example, are there unused Zip code numbers that could be designated to major world cities, regions or countries and which would then allow me to see other Canadians who live in my city or at least province?)

is anything happening with the members nearby feature?

As a follow-up to this post from last year, is anything happening with the members nearby feature being extended to cover people that don't have a zip code? If the latitude and longitude thing is too much work can we group people outside the US by country?

US-centric voting reminder

So, there's the 'vote reminder' on the top of each and every thread then. That's fabulous, truely. It'd be nicer if it only displayed if a user's $location == 'USA'? I won't mention the amount of worthless VoteFilter posts it'll encourage...
