A Bit of My Landlord’s Ear at last

Speaking of old AskMes, I finally found the answer to mintcake!’s question about an old MTV comedy bit that’s been taunting me for 12 years. A bit of my landlord’s ear!

Adding year of release to Fanfare front page posts

This has been asked before, in Nov 2022, when the site owner called it a "really good idea" and a then-current tech person said it seemed "uncontroversial and positive, so I'll put that on the pile of things to do." Is this still something the community thinks is worth doing? If so, any chance it could be implemented? It might increase engagement in an area of the site that could use it. I know I'd find it useful, anyway.

FanFare AutoBoost thought for your consideration

How about adding a 'trigger' that moves a movie to the top of the page when it goes to streaming. And other "life events" in the career of any particular media. Perhaps when a book is turned into another form (see Like Water for Chocolate ballet) which is also a film, (hmm needs an opera:) The easiest initial implementation would be a place to insert a release date for theater->streaming, not sure how to auto-populate but we can research that. Mostly for blockbusters but that does seem to be a preponderance of films on the lavender.

Your media of 2022

What did you play this year? What did you watch? What did you read? None of it has to be the greatest ever, or even anything that came out in 2022, I'd just like to hear about what you spent time with and what it meant to you.

"Series" rather than "TV" on Fanfare?

I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before but I can't find it. Is it possible to change the category "TV" to "Series" or "Series Show" on Fanfare? With so many series being watched on various streaming platforms and various devices, TV doesn't seem like a helpful category to me?

Definitive Answer to an AskMe - A Decade Later

10 years ago an AskMe user who had ordered a TV online ended up receiving the wrong order, instead being delivered a much nicer, higher end TV than the one she had purchased. This user came to AskMe inquiring if it would have been ok to have kept the nicer television, leading to a very lively discussion. A decade later, a definitive answer.

Looking back on ten years of FPPs

I've joined many web communities in my life, but none for as long or as wholeheartedly as MetaFilter. I've learned a lot, grown as a person, and taken direction from the thousands of smart, funny, and caring people who write here. And I've been inspired to write, too, putting more time and effort into researching worthwhile posts than I have at any other creative hobby. Sadly, what with work and the news chaos and competing interests it feels like there's less and less time to focus lately, and seeing linkrot erode what I do post is a drag. So when showbiz_liz's lovely celebration of ten years on the blue made me realize my own 10th Mefiversary was approaching, I was moved to do something about it. Nothing on the web lasts forever, but armed with old notes files, the Wayback Machine, and a drive to rediscover my own personal Best of the Web, I plowed through all 149 posts (and a few comments) to recover lost links, check on what had happened since, and organize it all into a single FPP omnibus for your reading pleasure. Big Dairy is on to us

I'm not entirely sure this warrants a MeTa but, what the hell, I'm making one anyway. Michael Schur (@kentremendous), the creator of The Good Place*, discovered this AskMe and played into it a little bit. The resulting Twitter thread is short but amusing. [more inside]

New FanFare TV Post Types

Is this a problem with FanFare?

Perhaps this is confirmation bias, but it seems to me that many FanFare threads have descended into “this show or movie is bad, and you are a bad person for watching it.” This, despite that fact that the people making these statements are clearly (hate?) watching the show or film. [more inside]

New Features: FanFare Talk, and Movies

Today we're releasing a spot for discussing plans for TV and Movie watching (stuff like the Horror Film Club, the Summer camp series, etc) by adding a discussion area to FanFare called FanFare Talk. We're also adding the ability for new posts in the Movies section to be added by members instead of just me for the last couple months of testing. Both discussion posts and movie posts will need to be approved before going up, as TV shows still are moderated. The front page of FanFare has been updated to show the titles of recent Talk posts along with a new tab in the upper right to get to all the discussion posts. [more inside]

New labels at FanFare for special case threads

Today we're adding four new labels for TV show threads at FanFare, to denote special spoiler conditions. Two are for recent experiments in "Rewatch" and "First Watch" threads, the other two are specifically for Game of Thrones threads, which we'll be splitting the last two episodes of this season into "Show Only" and "Books included". MefiTV?

Repeatedly asked for in this thread about the closing of TWOP, a subforum for Metafilter to cover TV. Can I suggest a possible trial by allowing members who've taken on a program to make a FPP with a simple round-up of recaps from the web and then to let a thread flourish? With a rule about no spoilers for the trial period, because later on there could be a spoiler free/spoilered-to-smithereens alternate threads. I can get good recaps from a bunch of places online, and committing to volunteer recaps is a Big Chunk of Time. Mostly what I can't get, and loved from TWOP, is snarky smart conversation about a show I love. If the trial leads to great discussions, then a separate section could be made so the front page doesn't get cluttered with TV threads. Nominating: The Vampire Diaries, Scandal, Community, Elementary, Teen Wolf (come back Elizardbits!), Supernatural and I will volunteer happily for Melissa and Joey, a sitcom that I believe is profoundly undercriticised despite huge popularity and weirdly progressive sexual politics and ethics. Ahem.

People are always saying to me, "You know, you're quite a character."

I'm looking for an old AskMetafilter question out of sheer curiosity. It was more than a year ago — someone was asking for examples of TV characters that have been on multiple TV series. The OP had some very specific criteria, which were apparently a bit hard to grasp, since almost all the answers were missing the point; the OP had to leave a comment to clarify what s/he was looking for. I don't remember exactly what the clarification was — just that it was so specific that it was surprising there were many possible correct answers (if indeed there were). [more inside]

Is there a mefite working on Don't Trust the B in Apt 23?

In the cold open of the Don't Trust the B episode "Dating Games," the titular character says, "I'm sorry, my friend wants to apologize for the boringness. To make up for it she'll show you her taters." Was this a coincidence or is there someone working MeFi in-jokes onto the show?

Hi Craig!

Yesterday's Craig Ferguson thread was kicked off with a comment by argedee: "I could be that funny too, with a laugh track like that." The thread turned into a discussion about laugh tracks and whether Craig uses one or not. In his monologue last night, Craig addressed "rumors on the internet" that his audience laughter isn't real. Has mathowie gone commercial?

Disclaimer: This is something you need a TV to know about...
Has anybody but me seen a commercial for Volkswagen (apparently SoCal VW Dealers, but maybe showing in other regions) in which the salesman outside the car is pointing out all the comfort features to the wife in the driver's seat while the husband on the passenger's side is just using the power seat to go up and down and up and down? You'd know it if you saw it, because the actor playing the husband is (to me) a dead ringer for Matt Haughey (including the glasses). I can't find a video of that commercial online anywhere, but I wonder if some actor is going to make a career out of impersonating Our #1... (Or is the resemblence just another sign of my worsening dementia?) Dammit, they are the same glasses!!!

MattyG's TV themes

Constantly on the lookout for new, fresh talent, I looked on the Userland "Most Most Read Sites Yesterday" page. At the top of that list, with 19,105 reads yesterday as well as at the top of the "Most Read Sites" (of all time, presumably) with 4,679,582 reads, is MattyG's TV and Movie Theme Songs ... and more!. My point? Well, a) all the action is on the discussion boards (no post on the main page since November 20, 2000, and b) Matt Garland's site does one thing very well, non-commercially.
