Deletion of site with mostly different content? June 15, 2006 11:38 AM   Subscribe

My link to a site with a few hundred photographs gets deleted because it's supposedly a double of a 2-year old link to a post on some messageboard with but a few dozen similar pictures? What gives? (I've happily accepted the fate of unfortunate double posts in the past, but these links are not the same...)

You should have thrown a little animated GIF at the end of your post.

yeah, your link was more informative. Thems the breaks, kid.

Did you see those other posts and decide that your post was different enough to post it?

Your link is excellent, while I wouldn't have flagged it and was happy to see it, color photography from WWI has been covered three times now:

The more recent post was from just a few months back and went to something that sounded very similar, but is now a broken link. I linked to the two year old post just because it was still live.

the problem with taking the double post rule too far is that according to those people who do not read MetaFilter every day (I would say thats somewhere around 90%), a "double post" might be new to them. Did this post really ddo any harm? Flagging it sounds a little anal to me.

I don't know, I think it's worth sticking around. It's a much deeper site than some message board post.

Oh, I guess it is a triple post. Jessamyn swayed me. It's deleted, sorry (it was new to me and I thought it was cool).

Fair enough... Them's the breaks I guess... and no, smackfu, I did not see the previous links. I searched for URLs and tags, and found nothing.

Well, you could use that argument for any double post. But I think your basic point is valid, I just think it's a "lesser of two evils" thing. In this case, the greater evil is repeated recycling of the same subject, discussion, arguments, etc.

Anyway, people should be reading MetaFilter every day. It's good for you.

This is why I always grab 70-80 related links from Google on the subject. Much less likely to be deleted as a double then.

It's too bad it was deleted (I love these things), but when I saw that show up in my RSS feed, I was sure it MUST be a double (because I've seen this type of thing so many times before).

Can we just skip to the part where mathowie regrets allowing that pulsing icon without actually going through the posts which will inevitably cause him to regret it?

No, we want those posts and we will have those posts.
