stupid callout

Alt-F

discuss it with yourself.

Does alt-f do something other than bring up the file menu in non-windows machines? I've seen previous references on here, but it's a bit confusing since I'm a windows user.
posted by antifuse at 1:55 AM on July 21, 2006

Oh, and I didn't think this was a callout, I thought it was a call to bring the tailgating etiquette discussion into this thread. Which I'm going to do:

Canadian drivers seem to be particularly bad at tailgating, maybe because they're used to doing it in blowing snow, when it can actually be safer than keeping so far back you can't see the guy's lights in front of you.

Yes, because in Canada, it snows 90% of the time! Yeesh, for somebody who is so close to Toronto, you'd think YOU would know that realistically, the days when you're driving in blowing snow are limited to what, maybe 20/year? And I'm being extremely generous in that figure.
posted by antifuse at 2:00 AM on July 21, 2006

sorry antifuse, it's just so many things just need a flag it response that alt-f is my own idiotic shorthand for such.
posted by edgeways at 2:02 AM on July 21, 2006

evil holiday magic, you and I obviously have diametrically opposite positions on the meaning of hostility. I could have sworn that Jessamyn's comment would be defined on a public internet noticeboard as politeness.

Discuss amongst yourselves...

I'd prefer not to.

peacay, I think he's referring to the reaction to this thread even though the door was clearly opened to it by Jess' comment, not her good-cop admin style.

Torontonians have problems with snow, antifuse.

/Western snark, apologies for the horrific colour scheme of that page.

No, our batshitinsane mayor at the time (the same one who told my best friend the reporter, as he was on his way to Africa to try and garner goodwill for our Olympic campaign, that he was afraid of ending up in a pot with cannibals dancing around him) had problems running the city. At any rate, that's neither here nor there as far as "having to drive in blowing snow all the time" is concerned. :)

Why the hostility?

Just guessing, but:

1) MeTa callouts that have the appearance of being whiny ("waah, comments were deleted") are rarely received well. I realize whining may not have been your intention, but it's your responsibility to make that clear. We can't read your mind.

2) "Discuss amongst yourselves" is stupid and overused and everybody's sick of it and nobody wants to hear it. If you know what I mean.

Anyone? Is this some mysterious and obscure Mac thing? For Windows and Linux Alt-F just opens the File menu. I dug through the Wiki and the Faq and searched through the metatalk archives but didn't find anything.

So is the consensus that tailgating while not wearing a seatbelt and going through an intersection monitored by a red-light camera a good thing or a bad thing? All these snarky comments have me confused.
posted by TedW at 10:00 AM on July 21, 2006

The consensus is that tailgating is awesome, so long as you have enough bratts and beer.

Am I the only person who often has the nearly uncontrollable urge to slam on my brakes when I'm being tailgated? But then, I really hate tailgaters.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 7:35 PM on July 21, 2006

languagehat, I'm not familiar with "callout" or this "Alt-F" command, or much of the shorthand being used. I didn't have any posts deleted from the other thread, and was just interested in hearing other people's off-the-other-topic responses to the problem of tailgating. A number of friends and relatives have been involved in accidents related to this behavior, so it's of interest to me. Or it was.

You guys have totally ruined the subject of tailgating for me.

It's interesting with what little prompting regulars can turn a thread into a dreary exercise in inside references and cultural isolation. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit I'm actually saddened by this. I've enjoyed reading posts from some of you in the past, but the disproportionate backlash against this post is surprising and just disappointing.

I know it's not just me. A lot of MeFi posts are followed by immediate condemnation: "Worst. Post. Ever." And most spiral into irrelevant gibbering about a third the way through. It's becoming a bore.

I thank those who contributed.

Matt/Jess: you have my blessing to delete this depressing thread.

Oh wait, it wasn't. But it is what I'd expect. More noisy, thread-killing fap fap fap from a good ole boy.

Seriously, even if you think the subject matter is thin, this could have been a normal discussion.

But, no. The thread police know what's best.
posted by evil holiday magic at 3:09 PM on July 23, 2006

You should maybe think about lightening up and taking a look at your tone throughout. Maybe, just maybe, your framing (or inadequate lack thereof) contributed to how this was received.

Regardless, if you take yourself this seriously you're probably going to be disappointed more often than not by MeTa.
posted by OmieWise at 6:18 PM on July 23, 2006

Ah, continuing with the premise that I should have pleaded my case to the content gods to recognize the justification for my post. I said what types of posts were deleted, and referenced the original thread--in which Jess actually advocated taking the etiquette discussion here. Some people overreacted, and in came the noise posts. I can't account for some dude with a twitchy "Alt-F" command, or people who can't be bothered to read the original thread, or anyone just interested at snarking when there's blood in the water.

Matt was clever in that he omitted a lot of what made traditional forums so lame: signatures, avatars, slow loading tables. But you can't remove the stupid. The noise that envelops so so many discussions and turns the subject--any subject--into an exclusionary chat between regulars is so tiresome I close most threads a third through.
