Is Jessamyn a volunteer or paid? October 15, 2006 2:43 PM   Subscribe

"I don't know if she's paid or volunteer, but I damned sure wouldn't want to have jessamyn's job." Well, me neither -- I sometimes disagree with the judgement calls, but wouldn't want to be the one making them, and I don't see why anyone would volunteer for it. So is jessamyn paid?

Apologies for the new MeTa post, but I think it's a Big Enough Question that it deserves one. Unless it's been answered somewhere before, in which case I'm just dumb.

Matt's said on the site somewhere that he tosses a few dollars her way now and then.

What business is it of yours whether she is paid or not?

in addition to moderation, jess is also a crack librarian, excellent photog, and a bumbling but promising escape artist.

If she isn't, she should be.

Me neither, mostly because of threads like these.

A question better asked via e-mail, I think.
posted by solid-one-love at 3:27 PM on October 15, 2006

Perhaps it was better asked via e-mail, but I'm glad it was asked here, though, just because I'm curious. Not because it will overturn any opinions of mine, nor reinforce them, just idle curiosity.

Speaking as someone who's had posts & comments deleted by both moderators, if people don't agree with moderation, or dislike half the two-person moderation team, they don't have to post to a moderated site. Usenet's still there, as is livejournal, etc. etc. etc.

I would like to have pay schedules posted, and minutes of the meetings available for public inspection.

Den Beste: What business is it of yours whether she is paid or not?

I raised the question of compensation (over in the other thread) because Jessamyn seems to take a lot of abuse (ranging from "fuck you" to "this site was so much better before you started moderating") as a result of her moderation, that I was trying to work out in my mind what compensation, if any, she gets in return for her work here. I thought that if she's being well-compensated, the bullshit might be easier to tolerate than if it's merely a labor of love.

And now it's 4 out of 8, which means 50% of reklaw's MeTa callouts are I Don't Like Jessamyn.

OK, seriously, that's just not true. This is just curiosity. I have absolutely no opinion on jessamyn, the person, nor any bad feelings towards her. I'm just curious if she gets paid to put up with all this shit, or not.

This is about as importaint as who is sleeping with who... so who would like to share? Last few nights I've been sleeping alone so nothing interests me more, and by more I mean less. I think both Mat and Jess do an excellent job in moderation. People can post their snowflakes elsewhere.

jessamyn deserves to get paid.

Wait, how'd jonmc become the topic again?

I've always thought of Jessamyn as almost saintly, so the thought of whether or not she gets paid for this has never crossed my mind.

I guess I thought that she was doing it as some sort of penance so that she can eventually be canonized.

But we don't have to talk about me. Let's talk about you. What do you think of me?

I've always thought of Jessamyn as almost saintly,

Jess is a very patient lady and a good administrator, but nominating someone for sainthood is just too much pressure. I've met Jess and she didn't seem the saintly type.

Jessamyn deserves to be paid, along with the three other mods we don't have (one of whom lives in Europe and/or Australia).
