MarkovFilter: Lemme see if any American supermarkets have taken in this stuff to decorate my dorm room. September 11, 2007 1:37 PM   Subscribe

Allow me to properly introduce you to MarkovFilter.

MarkovFilter is an application that parses (random samples of) a comment history and creates a new comment via an elegant probabilistic model known as Markov Chains.

The idea was done once before by majcher-here are some previous threads (1, 2, 3), and it's been mentioned many times over the years.

Now it's back, and it's running live against the mefi database, so there's no scraping needed and it'll always be up to date and available for all accounts.

I've tried to bulletproof the code as well as I can, and we'll try to tweak the script to make sure that it doesn't burn mefi down, but if you discover any problems or gotchas please do let me know. Big props to majcher for making it happen back in '03, and to pb for indulging me by setting up a dev environment where I could implement this The Right Way.

My completely random guess would be able to solve our economic woes by just creating more gold. I got through college on a mix of loans, good internships, and family support. It was certainly character-building, but I wouldn't expect it to be. Note that you were actually drunk when you were in the middle of the pot instead of just disposable income - putting yourself in a manager role. The Wayback Machine shows that most people aren't close to the cannonball for the appropriate people. These are some amazingly laid-back people about the knives, boards, condiment bins, etc. This keeps happening over and over again (marriage, fluoride, astrology, blah blah blah). Rattlesnake Ledge (easier) or Granite Mountain (better scenery) have a tough time coming up with $60 at the Department of Which Murders We Cover, any answer will be speculative. Unless anybody knows of one? I may as well just get started with God Only Knows by the idea that something lacks emotion is different. But I'm afraid of an article which you can demonstrate as being more scientifically sound.

The Chewbacca Defense seems apropos.

Glad the site hasn't melted from this.

And, man, if ever there was a thread that was hard to parse for actual questions, this is it. Anyone who complains about how metatalk threads get too noisy with the silliness needs to read this one straight through a couple times.

So, to answer a few things:

Why do words I *know* appear in my comments get rejected as keywords?

The keyword search is pretty limited: it'll only work for words (or substrings) that appear in the first two words of a line from an original comment. That's out of deference to speed and light memory footprint; I might build a version that works for a text prompt anywhere, eventually, but it's a bit more work and would eat more resources for every execution.

Also, if your commenting history is on the large side, you might even fail to match a word that you know appears in the first two words of an original comment. See below:

What order of Markov chain generates the output and how many input samples go into one output?

It's an order-2 chain: each key value is a pair of words (where "word" is defined as "string of characters not interrupted by whitespace"). So, to be clear, this paragraph would be broken into keys like [It's an], [an order-2], [order-2 chain:] and so on. That's a default—I could redefine the order at runtime, in theory.

The script is defaulting to a maximum of one thousand comments per subsite, across mefi, ask, metatalk, and music. If you don't have more than a thousand comments on any given subsite, your whole (non-deleted) history is getting parsed. If you have more, it's grabbing a random subset. I'm not sure whether execution time is better or worse than O(n), but letting it run against the whole of, say, jonmc's posting history generates observable lag.

That goes back to the known-good-keyword failure: if you have more than a thousand comments, there's a chance your keyword appears only in one of the comments that didn't get selected.

It doesn't really recognize parenthetical statements though. Can I have a partial refund for that since I use those often?

It's the nature of the Markov model that it doesn't know anything about matched delimiters—including parens, brackets, quotes, *emphasis marks*, html tags, etc. Matching could be engineered in, but, well, eh. The pure approach here is more pleasingly dadaist anyway. We're breachin' the threshold of punctuational norms, man!

So, no. No refunds.

I don't seem to have enough data to keep it from quoting whole sentences straight from my posts

Another quirk of Markovian analysis. I could try to tweak the model at runtime to gear the n-order down (or up!) in step with comment history size thresholds, but that may be a bit much to bother with. A 1-order model would generate more randomness for small comment histories, but it'd be pretty dang incoherent. A 3-order model would up the coherence of very large source histories, but with the current cap in place that's not much of an issue.

2) Will everyone's nonsensical posts in this thread get picked up by the Markovizer and compound the nonsense?

Yep! Though probably won't up it appreciably; this is just a few comments per user among hundreds or thousands.

Hrm. This works on my usernumber (528) but not my username (judith), which led me to discover that I have a doppelganger, who is "Judith" at usernumber 742. I guess Mefi distinguishes case but Markov doesn't?

Well I'll be goddamned. I'm pretty sure Mefi's account reg stuff is not now case-sensitive—I remember testing it and finding that it rejects attempts to reg a only-case-different new account—but it looks like Matt didn't have that in place from day one. Huh.

A related tricky thing: if you want to markovate delfuego, you have to use his name, because his usernumber is 111. Heh.

I love that the eyeballkid one never once says "I hate you all."

Nonsense; it just takes the proper coaching.

I used to have a DOS program that did shit similar to this long ago. I think it was called Babel or Babble. Dave McKean used it to generate some random text for his work on Signal to Noise. way back in the day.

There's also the classic Disassociated Press, which I think comes more or less standard with emacs distributions.

The fun part will be weeding these out when used in real live threads. Good luck and happy hunting, bitches!

Yeah, uh, please don't use MarkovFilter for evil. I'd hate to have to go around deleting the spawn of my own creation.

Honestly, I think wrongfully accusing someone of trolling should be covered in a vagina.

Yes. A thousand times yes.

This is too much fun. I love that 9/10 of my generated comments contain some kind of music criticism or analysis that almost makes sense.

This should be writing pop songs. The Rosebuds play quite a bit at first, before my brain shifts into the position of defending metal, which I find pasting long lyrical excerpts in a much bigger gap between western classical music would be more like Led Zeppelin? It's fairly boggling that you will about them, when they ask for a horn section, for example.

Oh, man, that song, I'm Not There (1956), is so entirely tied to hooks with strings which we realize the aspect of the legal intricacies helps, but I fear that that's already come to regard with distrust the orthodox critics, and to define ‘dyslexia.’ Some children in countries with transparent alphabets do have everything for the stability of the sword's phallogocentrism in the same subject. Would it be easy to make it possible to do a thread-based query rather than username-based?

Actually, yeah. I don't really want to worry about supporting a bunch of crazy UI widgets on the main MarkovFilter page—I like the simple interface—but I might put together a collection of one-off Markov toy searches that create different bits of output. I'll think about how to handle that.

how does it know to put in codes? I get a lot of "small" tags in my own markocomments, along with a lot of random links that don't work.

It doesn't even know that there is html in there. It doesn't know what html is, or what an english word looks like. To the model, any series of characters bounded by whitespace is a "word", so if you have this:

<a href="http://buttslol.com">butts are very lol</a>

That gets treated as a string of five tokens:

<a
href="http://buttslol.com">butts
are
very
lol</a>

Because it knows about these things as pairs of words with possible third-word followups, it's breaks that down as such:

["<a" , "href="http://buttslol.com">butts"] => are
["href="http://buttslol.com">butts" , "are"] = > very
["are" , "very"] => lol</a>

Where you've got link text that's fairly unique, or just one or two words long, you'll usually get the whole href barfed back up correctly because there's little or no chance of the model splitting off in a new direction. But if your link text is a phrase, and especially if it's a phrase with some common word-pair (like "is a" or "are very" or whatever), you might get a crazy weird run-on link because the terminal </a> doesn't show up like normal.

“Public departure announcements are almost always a tacky, tacky way to go.”

It's because they are almost always disgruntled. Burhanistan's doesn't seem to be, but it does have that “you're wasting your lives here, I'm going to stop wasting mine” vibe going. Which isn't very congenial, either.

I think that if someone were packing up to live without electricity in the northern tundra, saying “goodbye, it's been fun, good luck to everyone, you're great!” would go over fine.

But I usually just announce it to myself more than anything. Then I walk away to concentrate on other things for a bit & come back when I'm refreshed/ready. Voilá. Problem solved.

Who knows what I'll say here when I'm off to move into my survivalist igloo in the tundra, though. Time will tell I suppose.

It's maybe optimistic to think that MarkovFilter (or any other text-generating gadget) is going to ruin all the discourse on the site, right? Markov comments might pop up occasionally at first, where they'll be flagged into the ground by the easily peeved. Then the novelty will wear off and we'll all go back to saying whatever stupid things we can come up with in real time.

He had this 3x3x6' construct with a Canon has also written some fantastic books on Floyd and the esteemed members of the un-worn part of society or die, to me, is hopeful.” Fucking hell. Suddenly, I feel like they've maintained quality pretty well. Of course, Withnail's character has always bugged me -- I'm a trained professional satire detector, you know.

I just can't stop posting these.

My 2 cents: I had a similar question previously here. What I found similar between our two situations was the use of "powerful" symbols and gestures, which are seen as racist or hateful.

Jeez yhbc, there's a Prince Albert in there too? Wayyyyyy too many word association games going on there

Fantastic.

anyone who can decode this gets an official scarabic no-prize in the mail!

stand a yard back and arc it

You don't have the necessary knowledge transfer and any "unsupervised" access to some plateau you didn't like them and adjusting to the cheap airfare we all really love suck a bit in the end, so just stay out of Matt's skills, talent/creativity, and unique credibility. A minimum. And 70K as a column or editorial. People here keep pointing out how people in LA will think is an all-time favorite.

neat!

Whaaat? Is someone supposed to go beyond a few spots I want someone with the million or so I don't appreciate having my words co-opted to mean diversity = "lots of people just say "skip over them." Some folks do all of this.

I have your ideas about how fat they are: to hell with 'em.

...dear god in heaven.

As far back as 1996 in fact. Yes, Dallas will be realized. Damn shame, but next time I felt I was annoyed by that asshole. That writer is a rarity, yet deer, cattle, moose, and other wild beasts of that Bob Simon interview - and enjoy debating topics without really caring as much about MeFi decline is like chasing the wind. But so long ago you could say I thoroughly enjoy the spectacle. =)

God bless, are we jaded or what?

Wait, what? Now I have my handle and "Prince Albert in there" forever linked in the interweb? Great, just great.

This really is addictive, because while you refresh yourself you see some things you vaguely remember saying, and many others that you have absolutely no recollection of ever saying in your life, and a few things that you might have said, but are very funny in the context of the other things the program pulls up. Like as follows:

The Lemon Law also only applies to dealers in merchandise of the responses that are about completely disregarding the theories in toto. And just to bring doughnuts.

Some things I'm learning from this psycho virtual mirror of myselvis while geeking about with it:

1) I talk about Dallas Texas waaaay too much.
2) I don't talk about Janeane Garofalo hardly as much as I thought I did. Or Buffy, apparently.
3) It doesn't seem to know words I think I use a lot (cringeworthy, gobbledegook, triglycerides, "FPP," refering to MeFi as "The Blue") because it just defaults to randomness on my favorite words, but if I put in a boring word (my, what, since, this) those seem to work better.
4) Poopie works great!
5) I'm even more disturbed than I thought I was which is really cool!
6) It's a good idea, but ultimately as you know, it just regugitates gobbledegook. I would like to see it make stuff that looks more like what I'd post, but the programming needs more work.
7) The average faux Zach post from MarkovFilter is way smaller than my average ramble, yet still doesn't get to the point any faster.

Oh! And it'd be cool if you could put a keyword in but leave the username blank, and get any random person. It defaults to Cortex. I guess that'd be too much of a strain on the system tho if you did that. =) Anyway. Fun toy! Thanks!

Actually, blank = random user would be a good feature to add. It defaults to me because falling back to some hardcoded known-good value was the simplest way to respond to bad input; but it might be a trivial performance hit on top of all the crunching it takes to build the table and produce output.

Also, on your point (3), it has to be words that occur at the very beginning of a comment. So

I really like Buffy's hair...

won't get seeded into the keyword table, but

Buffy has the best hair evar in s3 ep14...

will.

As for (6), it'll always be gobbledegook—the Markov model is a really brilliant little principle, but it's not easily extensible beyond context-free collocations. That'd be a totally different model. Likewise for (7): it just goes until it stops, with a couple arbitrary limits. Capturing per-user sentence/paragraph length and overall formatting habits would be a separate project entirely (though the two could in theory be fused).

And because you love her, you will want to take j's suggestion and sign up for carrying out the tasks on your list at the IT help center.

If the answer is yes, you have tenure, then be careful. In my opinion you should move to San Francisco.

When I had plantar fascitis, my physical therapist told me that you care about me so much.

I think it has much more to do with rationally working out how to live within your means, and part of this is who is tenured and who isn't.

Doing yoga or meditation is certainly relaxing, so it could earn more or less than 7%. You can't know for sure.

Thai: Pad Kee Mow (Drunkard's Noodles) is my favorite, and has the added bonus of being the sole provider for your family.

Please tell us more about your family including garden freaks.

Thanks so much for your concern - it means a lot more - but first I need to be fairly opaque.

How about channeling your perfectionism toward different ends? Could you redefine 'achievement' in a hurricane?

Thanks for all the time. The administrator will figure out where the professor is. I suggest that you steal your identity.

Therefore, I would keep working with the gory details, but the times I missed X, Y, and Z events it was because I was their slave. Looking down on people you consider socioeconomically beneath you (like someone working the theater box office, even as a volunteer) is also important.

Thanks so much for your concern - it feels intrusive and pressuring, which I'm sure is now how you invest the money in an IRA.

Help! Help! I'm going to need a support group to stop!
