the new contacts page is leaving me wanting...

even though I'm acquaintanted with myself and dare say I am developing a little crush on this cute guy I see in the mirror I just can't express that on my contacts page. I am fairly certain I've also met myself, though my memory is a little bit cloudy on that.

matt? help? please?

(I also can't ignore myself but that might have something to do with my size.)

Yeah, we removed the contact yourself thing when we revamped it, which seems logical to me. I think pb explained it in the original thread about it. Something about it being too risky to leave that around, for fear of everyone contacting themselves, turning the site into itself and causing the server to create a black hole that could swallow the universe.

It is possible to add yourself as a contact. Although you won't show up in the list of people who you have linked to and people who have linked to you.

That you can (or could?) add yourself as a contact at all is (was?) an edge-case bug, not something to design the new contacts page around.

If there are specific useful things that the contacting-yourself trick makes possible, it's probably fine to talk about those features as things we could consider adding to the intended functionality of the site, but that's a different sack of monkeys entirely.

It's a simple hack, but we're all navel-gazing enough as it is, don't you think?

Also, that swallowing-the-universe thing that Matt mentioned.

They've got cool orange socks at Old Navel.

But the ability to search favorites by username would not be navel gazing.

I think maybe we should implement a new "search favorites by banning Brandon Blatcher if he doesn't cut that shit out" feature.

If Blatcher is banned, can I have his train set?

No, it ain't. "me" is a supported value of the "rel" attribute in xfn 1.1.

WELL I GUESS WE SHOULD JUST RENAME THIS PLACE 'XFN1.1FILTER' THEN

or, if you prefer, WELL WHY DON'T YOU MARRY IT

The thing about having yourself as a contact (and I too am among the super-vain who've exploited the "edge case") is that you then finally see what other people see about what you've been doing, boring and mundane as that may be. i_am_joe's_spleen had a best answer in Is "bonzer" bonzer? 9 days ago. Awesome!

When cortex says "If there are specific useful things that the contacting-yourself trick makes possible, it's probably fine to talk about those features as things we could consider adding", my response is, O wad mathowie the giftie gie us, to see oursels as others see us.
