New profile "also on" updates: Strava, Steepster, Newsblur, [more] June 3, 2013 8:31 AM   Subscribe

MeFi cyclists/runners: your Strava account, if you have one, is now linkable in the "Also On:" section of your profile. In this same update it looks like pb has also added: Steepster, Newsblur, Hacker News, ResearcherID, ResearchGate, and eBay (any others, pb?). Related link: MeFi Social Explorer (for finding other users with profiles on growing list of linkable communities).

Also recently: MeTa discussions of adding a Goodreads widget, and of an Archive of Our Own widget.

any others, pb?

Nope, that sounds right. I added these on Friday. I usually go through the list every few weeks to see if there are any more to add. If you have a suggestion you can add it here on the wiki.

Awesome. Any chance we could have a notice here when there are new networks? Otherwise we won't know about them.

In general it seems like a much better experience to request new social networks here on MetaTalk rather than via the supposed officially supported way via wiki. You get a response almost immediately whereas adding via the wiki you don't get a response ever, you just have to keep checking for weeks until it is done.

Not everyone wants the spotlight that a MetaTalk thread throws when they want to make a suggestion. A lot of times there isn't a need for a community discussion around Social Sites. Most of the time the suggestion meets the criteria outlined on the page and our response is: sure.

You can keep an eye on the wiki to see when things are added. If you use RSS you can subscribe to wiki changes or your own watchlist. It's not as visible as a MetaTalk thread, but that visibility isn't always positive for everyone.

has also added: Steepster

/me decides to actually google the thing first so I don't look a damn fool

HOLY SHIT IT ACTUALLY IS SOCIAL TEA

We should probably remove Vox and Xanga, now that both are gone.

Bummer the folks at Vine are still kind of iOS-only and don't have stable user profile pages and more on the web side of things, I'd love to get connected to everyone else on Vine.

Hey thanks for the Research Gate widget. Does anyone use ORCID at all?
posted by dhruva at 11:17 AM on June 3, 2013

Hey Matt, are you sure Xanga is gone? The profile links still work and the signup page is working.
posted by pb (staff) at 11:22 AM on June 3, 2013

This article says Xanga will shutdown if they don't raise $60k by July 15th, but that still gives them some time to go.
posted by Jahaza at 11:40 AM on June 3, 2013

I use ORCID. Here is my ORCID profile for ORCID 0000-0002-4517-1562. Can we add ORCID too?

I see your Xanga and raise.

Small bug report: it looks like the Twitter widget is broken, not showing recent tweets on my profile or the other profiles that I checked. This is in Chrome and Safari on OS X.
posted by dreamyshade at 1:17 PM on June 3, 2013

Oh, maybe Twitter is just having problems - I'm getting a lot of "Something is technically wrong." errors over there.
posted by dreamyshade at 1:18 PM on June 3, 2013

I think the Twitter widget is just a Javascript file that Twitter hosts and one call into it, so if it breaks, it is on Twitter's end.

How about an Instagram photos widget a la the Flickr one?
posted by Celsius1414 at 3:39 PM on June 3, 2013

eBay doesn't seem to have an icon in my profile, just a white box.
posted by MoTLD at 3:44 PM on June 3, 2013

How about adding BeWelcome.org? Wiki here.

It is a hospitality exchange site, much like Couchsurfing, but non-profit and the software is open source. Since CS went for-profit a while ago, banned and deleted many profiles, restricted member's rights etc. I have seen many people change over to BW.

travelwithcats, go ahead and add it to the suggested sites wiki page along with a working profile page and we'll take a look.
posted by pb (staff) at 3:51 PM on June 3, 2013

MoTLD, here's a link to the eBay icon. My guess is that it just wasn't loading quickly for you. Try loading it directly with this link and then go back to your profile page.
posted by pb (staff) at 3:55 PM on June 3, 2013 [1 favorite]

travelwithcats, thanks for introducing me to BeWelcome. I'm one of those CouchSurfing users who's disappointed by the for-profit thing, so an alternative is nice!

pb, that did it, thanks!

Instagram doesn't offer a widget like Flickr does. If they start offering them we can revisit.

Also, I see the Cryptocurrency (bitcoin) forum was considered too niche, which I understand, but (without naming names), so are plenty of places that are on the list. Is there anyone else who would like to see that forum linked?

If it's just me, I'll let it go until bitcoin becomes a thing. ;)

Would be nice to see Runtastic on there.

I understand that mod priority is the community here, but people aren't asking for these for the little profile badges, they want to find other Mefites on the service. I'd appreciate occasional mod posts like the above, saying 'hey, pb added these 12 sites', rather than a trickle of variations on 'finally banjofanciers.com has been added, please be my banjopal'. "Check the wiki page for updates" sounds kinda like the Mefi equivalent of "on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'".

I use it every day.
posted by grouse at 9:30 AM on June 4, 2013 [1 favorite]

Actually, zamboni, I just wanted the badges. ;)

Really, though, what you say is dead on! I would love a way to find other MeFites in the other online communities I choose to participate in, but other than MeTas like this one, I don't know how to go about doing that.

Maybe expanding the also-on functionality to better integrate disparate communities (with MeFi as a hub, of course ;) is a pony for another time, but I wanted to express my interest as well.
posted by MoTLD at 9:40 AM on June 4, 2013

We do have the Social Explorer. You can look through that anytime to find MeFites at other services.
posted by pb (staff) at 9:43 AM on June 4, 2013

Wow, didn't know about that. Just what I was looking for, thanks!

Is that linked from some part of MeFi I have yet to explore (this is a big place!) or did I just miss it hiding in plain sight somewhere?

Maybe a topic for a different MeTa, but I find I'm much more interested in devoting my daily MeFi time allotment, when I even have such, to actually participating, so I spent too little time RTFMing first. I'm sure I'm not unusual in this respect, but I'm still not proud of it. As time has gone on, I've found this place draws me in further and further, so I keep putting it off and at this point it seems unlikely it will ever happen. I wish I had a solution, as this is kinda the RTFM problem in a nutshell.

It is a testament to y'all's UI design (and moderation, of course) that, despite this, we mange so well.

It's listed on the wiki and in the FAQ. And it's linked frequently in threads about social features. It's included in this post too.

Tiny pony request: could the title of the MeFi Social Explorer page please be changed so that instead of

MeFi Social Explorer | MetaFilter

it is something like:

Social Explorer: ORCID | MetaFilter
Social Explorer: ResearchGate | MetaFilter

This would make it easier to find the pages I am interested in in my history.
posted by grouse at 9:44 AM on June 6, 2013

Sure, added the service name to the title today.
