115: Boaty McBoatface, with barchan April 8, 2016 12:51 PM   Subscribe

Coasting in fashionably late, it's Ep #115 of Best Of The Web, wherein jessamyn and I chat with the geologirrific barchan about dunes, oil rigs, industrial accidents, her dog who also makes a couple cameos, and all kinds of MetaFiltery stuff. This show covers March 3 through April 7 and runs for just under two hours.

Reading the Misc links out of context before even thinking about listening to the podcast may be my favorite part of the podcast experience and this time even more than usual.

I'm geology adjacent so I'm extra excited to hear from barchan!

Thanks again for inviting me on! Thank you both for being so gracious with someone you don't really know/have never met and making me feel at ease - speaking of skills to admire.

Obligatory pics of my dog, who heard herself barking on the podcast and barked back.

(Yes, she's in her own sleeping bag, she gets cold, okay? Okay, okay, she's totally spoiled, but what is life if not a means to spoil dogs?)

I have told three different people today that feists are a thing that exist and they have all been delighted.

Oh wait, confirmshaming also includes times when you unsubscribe and they respond in an overly dramatic fashion?

I unsubscribed from a magazine when I moved from Australia to the US and later got a letter from them (my friend was checking my PO box) with this overwrought breakup-response letter that was all "What have we done wronggggg please come back to me babyyyyyy". It's not you, dude, it's quite literally me (and inane postage costs).

Then when I moved out of the US and had to cancel my Internet connection, I got a similar letter from my ISP! "Please tell us why you were unsatisfied and what we can do to make it better~~~" you were fine, I just can't bring you with me on the plane!

Cortex: I have unboofed and refeld it.

Sir, in one epideictic sentence you have passed the English Citizenship Examination! You are now permitted to acquire an English passport, the possession of which allows to you to perambulate outwith these borders. My congratulations to you, Mr Cortex esquire.

Jessamyn: if you delete the url, reload the tab. The url will reappear. ctrl-Z also works assuming you just did it, at least in chrome.

So on Saturday I went to the PLA conference (I went ahead and paid, holy crap, but worth it) and saw both Notaro (who was hilarious) and Giridhardas, who was interesting - totally not what I expected and he then pissed me the hell off but maybe I need to think about it some more. I also stopped by the Library Board Wars panel and the Weed in Denver. . . which was not what I thought it was going to be about, haha! But it was actually pretty interesting even though I was a little lost. I'd never put any thought into what a library does to its collection in terms of getting rid of things because it seemed like ragged=replace and everything else was kept forever.

I also spent way too long at a booth about book scanning, had a wonderful conversation by the GPO, and sadly did not get to the women writing the west booth in the exhibit hall.

Anyway, thanks for the wonderful recommendation!

"Self-declared cookbook author"?

Hey, I resemble that remark!

Also, "warmed up and crunchified" = my new slogan!

Really, I just came in to say that being mentioned on the podcast has made my week. Glad the Cookbook Title Generator generated some amusement.

Yay barchan! I'm glad you could do the podcast. I need to clarify the comment about oil and geology- I'm not at all surprised how many oil-related jobs there are. When I tell people I'm getting a geology degree, they usually either say "digging!" or "oil!". But I've been surprised as I learn more about the nature of petroleum jobs! I've met a number of people who care about the environment and love their jobs (um, where else can you even get paid to do stratigraphy?) and yet they're in the petroleum industry, and everyone I've talked to has complicated feelings about that.

Also, an addendum about Will It Waffle- feeling inspired, we had a whole delicious waffle-based Portland meetup last year- including waffled cookies!

Library conferences sound like the least problematic thing possible!

To someone that only knows about them through Twitter hashtags.

The NPM decision to restore a removed package actually reminded me a lot of MetaFilter and not allowing people to delete certain comments in a thread!

barchan's "hee-hee" laugh is adorable for sure, but it's awfully close to Cartoon Villain if you ask me.

Coming at this way, way, late but if you develop Fart Control into an "up scroller" as per jessamyn's suggestion may I humbly suggest Tootle Jump?
Am ok with Pootle Jump if it works better in your market.
