Oh great, now the podcast is going to join the nigh omnipresent stories on Vermont's plan to pay work-from-home folks to move there?

I appreciate that there's something in the news about Vermont that isn't Sanders or Ben & Jerry's.

Also, I got the VLA website thing fixed this morning!

I can confirm I had the flu when I thought of and wrote that question. It was proper secondary infection flu and everything. I still stand by that question. Admittedly, were I to ask it again in a different forum, I would find a better way to phrase it.

Thanks for the shoutout on MetaTalk about trying to make this specific subsite a friendly and happy place. I'm actively trying to do this all over MetaFilter as a whole, so cheers to that! :)

Still listening but Jessamyn, the cat and cooking YouTube channel you were thinking of is Jun's Kitchen.

Regarding the Teen Vogue “Summer Vagina” piece, Dr. Jen Gunter, OB/GYN has written an in-depth response:

The title alone is an issue because it suggests that A) everything in the genital tract is the vagina and B) that “summer vagina” is a thing.

Just listened. Thanks, it was fun. Grade S is the tops! Fizz, I know zip, zero, nada about videogame grades, but here are the real grades.

Where I teach we have this system. And, we just started calculating GPAs like 2 or 3 years ago. (I'm actually very unhappy about the GPA thing, but that is another story.)

90-100----Superior---(秀) -------S----4 points
80–89-----Excellent--(優)--------A----3 points
70– 79----Good-------(良)-------B----2 points
60– 69----Pass--------(可)-------C----1 point
0- 59------Fail---------(不可)-----F----0 points

秀 is pronounced "shu" with a long u.

This set up has become pretty standard. Some places have AA instead of S.
Basically, I think it came down to grade inflation. Everyone was getting A's so they just bumped that down and stacked a new grade on top.

Years ago when this was in transition and I started part-time at a new school the students were terrified of me and thought I was incredibly strict. No matter what they did I kept marking papers with A's, B's, and even horror of horror C's. Nobody could get an S out of me. Of course I just didn't know, and they didn't know I didn't know. So, they were all really happy after the summer break and all those 92s became S's and those really subpar C's magically became B's on their report cards.

Most of the noise is things like stroke count, grade level, unicode/jis code points, cross-reference to other dictionaries, yadda yadda. The last bits are the ON and KUN readings and name readings, then a general gloss of meaning. (yeah, it's a KANJIDIC entry).

Atlas Obscura had a more recent article on clown egg registers. Their actual atlas entry has a bit more information on the current status.
