World Cup 2018 June 5, 2018 10:26 AM   Subscribe

Hard to believe it's been 4 years since the last World Cup, which after some discussion resulted in a series of front page posts [first, second, third, fourth].
With live events [like Olympics, Eurovision, Academy Awards] sometimes hosted on FanFare and sometimes hosted on MetaFilter [royal wedding], is there a plan, procedure or policy for 2018 World Cup On Metafilter?

Have we settled on using FanFare, keeping in mind its reduced visibility, as the location for live events?
Are we ready to add some more 500+ threads to the front page?
Is this more like World Cup 2014, or Olympics 2016?
Should we have individual match threads, qualifying round threads, and threads focused on the totality of the experience?

Some previous football discussion is collected on the Football Club page, but those were mostly before we had the category of "Special Event" in Fanfare.

These days we're putting live-watch events like major sports events (Olympics etc) in the Special Event category, so World Cup stuff would naturally go there, for people who want live-watch/play-by-play type discussions.

For general posts on other issues related to the World Cup (human rights, FIFA corruption, history of World Cups past, etc), those would be in FPPs on the blue, and the threads wouldn't be for liveblogging the games.

How many Fanfare threads are needed depends on how many interested people there are and how the games go, I think. In the 2016 tournaments, lmfsilva posted a new thread for e.g. the quarter finals, the semi finals, and so on, and that seems like a reasonable starting position -- though, interested to hear from people who follow this closely. The goal is to maintain critical mass of people in a given thread, so we don't want to just spin up a new thread for every match if we don't actually have enough people to fill those threads.

i liked the daily catchall threads on the blue last time and would be delighted to have that on fanfare but i realize this may be a minority opinion.

I propose languagehat for captain of the MeFi commentary team. I recall, with fondest memory, his excellent performance in (re:) Brazil in 2014 - and surely our commentary team can draw great benefit from his Russian language skills this time ‘round. Of course, the final decision on this will rest with the Manager of the MeFi Commentary Team, and on that topic please you vote for #1 Mourinho kid. And why? Because I am a special one. ;-)

Also, as is traditional (for me, probably not for you): Sonnet World Cup will also be happening again. Dare you bet me a sonnet on the outcome of a particular match? Desire not the silence of the iambs, for I shall loudly lead my own iambs to the slaughter.

And that concludes my listing of quidnunc kidTM brand MeFi “in jokes” that no-one understands, gives a shit about, or has even noticed. :-)

I'd like to thank the quidnunc kid for his unbiased recommendation, which has nothing to do with the bag I was recently caught on tape handing to him which may or may not have contained wads of cash in consecutive bills. I will be participating in the threads and rooting for the albiceleste as always. In conclusion: Messi!

I mean, where do you even buy bags with dollar signs printed on them?

Edit: uh, of course. Never mind.

When Iceland wins the World Cup, will I be given MetaFilter to put on my mantlepiece for the four year duration of our reign, or will I have to share it with aldurtregi, Aya Hirano on the Astral Plane, Nothing, svenni and whichever active Icelandic or Iceland-residing MeFite I’m forgetting?

So the match schedule says the first match is 14 June, with group play running through 28 June. Round of 16 happens 30 June through 3 July, with quarter finals on 6th and 7th, and semis on 10th and 11th, playoff on the 13th and final on the 15th.

So following mod direction on Special Event usage, I propose:
Group play threads for each group, then follow the prior model of round of 16/ quarter/semi/final threads. All of this would be wrapped up into the existing Football Club, and possibly a WC2018 club as well, for organizational purposes.

Threads posted a day (let people find it and catch up due to time differences) in advance of the matches starting, and I recommend using "pointer" comments [i.e. groups pointing to quarter finals] to keep people in RA following along as well.

Group threads go up on 13 June, with schedule and information on teams. Round of 16 up on 29 June, quarter finals up on 5 July, semis on 9 July (a good place for playoff for 3rd?) and finals on 14 July.

i liked the daily catchall threads on the blue last time and would be delighted to have that on fanfare but i realize this may be a minority opinion.

This I think would look more like - SOCCER TODAY! - and have the day's matches lined up?

So on Friday 15 June we'd get Egypt v Uruguay, Morocco v Iran, and Portugal v Spain ?

Do we need 8 group threads? Might we be better off with 3 'Matchday' (FIFA's name) threads, ie, everyone's first game is Matchday 1, 2nd game is Matchday 2, etc.

Google has a neat little tool showing the "matchdays" I get it when I search for "FIFA world cup 2018."
That would put 16 matches in a thread, but I don't think people would talk about all of them - that may be more workable!
posted by the man of twists and turns at 3:50 PM on June 5, 2018

I also vote for organizing by matchdays rather than groups.
posted by yasaman at 4:13 PM on June 5, 2018

The other advantage with matchless is that if usage is low we can just run on rather than having 8 disparate quiet threads.

In a group post we can chat shit about a maximum of 4 active countries. In a match day post we can chat shit about 32 countries.

I think our choice is clear.

I would make a new post for each round, so 3 for the group stages and then 4 for the knockouts.

As for a post in the blue, I tried writing one, but kept repeating everything from the one I wrote after the draw, so don't wait for me.

England          the Three Lions

Oh, is that why England rarely triumph? There's only three of them ... rather than eleven. And none of them have any feet, as such. Although I see some of the other teams are animals as well, and ... Argentina is just some colours? How does a shade of blue play football??? Oh well, I guess they have a GOAT, he's pretty good, but ... basically this whole football thing doesn't make a damn lick of sense.

Brazil  —  Seleção means The Selection/Team

Huh, I’ve vaguely thought for years that ‘Seleção’ was something to do with ‘celestial’: the heavenly team. Which doesn’t make much sense now I stop and think about it, but it’s kind of disappointing to learn that it just means… team.

To compare the Brazilian selection with the stars makes perfect sense to me, and justifies the very notion of a cross-language pun! Oh, would that we all spoke every language on Earth, for then the realm of punnery would be an infinite empire. Think of the “dad” jokes!!! :-)

Dad in Kurdish means 'mother.' I leave the jokes as an exercise for the reader.

Also: mama in Georgian means 'father.'

Thus I look forward to the world in which we all speak every language (and wear every hat!) - no sentence could be uttered without sounding a cornucopia of giggles!

similarly "mannschaft" also just means team and not something hilariously pornographic

reproducing my post in the FanFare Football Club Talk thread

Following some suggestions, I think we should use the Matchday system, with a separate thread for each Matchday, followed by a thread for the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals and 3rd place, and final. Threads will go up at least one day in advance of the first game at each level.

Thread opening should hopefully include information on the teams involved, links to livestreaming, schedule information, commentary.

I've made a Metafilter league on bracketchallenge.fifa.com. The access code is already in the URL but here it is just in case you need it fbb6aa22.

In order to join you need to make a free account with FIFA. You'll need an email address for this but don't have to give them anything else. I just left the "Real Name" fields empty.

Because I signed up for some other leagues first my user name there is KPax23.

Of course the whole thing is ultimately pointless because my predictions are 100% accurate and my home country Germany will, of course and undoubtedly, win again this year.

It looks like only staff can make a Special Event post - can I e-mail you the post html?

Yup - just send it to the contact form and whoever's on duty can put it up for you.

And a Fanfare post doesn't need to be a contentful post like an FPP - so don't feel that you need to "work up" a post or anything. We can just put up a post and say what it's for ("here's the World Cup post"), once the games are happening. If people want to link to livestreams or "how to watch" or whatever, that can happen in the comments.

About the one-post-per-matchday idea -- Each time the action moves to a new thread, it fragments the conversation and risks losing people, and having a single very active thread is more fun and engaging than having several threads that are zzzzzzz. I want to err on the side of keeping things in as few threads as we can. I'm thinking it may make sense to start with one post for the Group stage, (anticipating then one for the round of 16, etc). Then if the first post gets so many comments on the first matchday that it becomes unwieldy, we can go to a one-per-matchday system then.

Also -- if folks want to start talking now in anticipation, before there's actual games happening to livewatch, a general World Cup FPP on the blue would be a good place for that.

I agree with these concerns. I am also concerned about people being unable to find the threads as they drop off the front page, as demonstrated here. Can they please be sidebarred? and we'll play on with new threads as needed.
posted by the man of twists and turns at 11:30 AM on June 12, 2018

Will definitely be sidebarred, yes.
(Also, check your email, if you have a minute.)
posted by LobsterMitten (staff) at 11:32 AM on June 12, 2018

not super important right now with them being sidebarred while it's happening, but can we try to have a common tag for future searches?

Yeah, worldcup2018 seems like a good one, if people want a semiarbitrary stipulation.

Ah ok, I'll delete the Fanfare one and we can wait til the games start for that. Folks can head to the blue for discussion today.

Might be worth putting up the Fanfare one a couple of days before the games start and add links to the MetaFilter WC2018 FIFA bracket challenge league and the MetaFilter WC2018 FIFA fantasy league. Those will lock down once the games start (latest) and there might be people who want to get in on the action but haven't seen the relevant MeTa posts yet.
