Curious, Matt, if you or anyone has studied the distribution of membership: East-West; International; Age, Gender, and all that...
I don't think it would bother anyone if you made the demographics questions optional. But then the statistics would be about useless, since they'd only be provided by a self-selected minority and would probably be skewed toward new members (since most people don't actually update their profiles often).

Knowing each other's demographics invites prejudice when reading comments.

I'm slightly curious, but since marketers ask the same questions, it might leave a similar bad taste in everyone's mouth.
