AskMe today regarding changing the stylesheet on user profiles January 19, 2005 2:49 PM   Subscribe

I swear that there was an AskMe today regarding changing the stylesheet on user profiles. I can't remember who posted the question, but they linked to a few profiles that they liked. Now I can't find the question. Was it deleted or am I experiencing hallucinations?

If there was, it might have been violating the guidelines as it would have been Meta related and therefore belonged here.

Deleted, I imagine because questions about MeFi, MeTa, or AskMe go in MeTa. As it says in the one and only boldfaced sentence on the Post a new question page.

Yep, it was there but obviously violated the guidelines and was deleted appropriately.

No, there never was such a question. We have always been at war with MonkeyFilter.

Does anyone remember who posted the question? The reason why I ask is that s/he linked to profiles that s/he liked. One of the profiles linked to a blog. I liked the blog, but didn't have time to read it. Now I can't remember that user's name.

It was Hands of Manos - I liked that post, too!

Bargle's profile (linked from taz) made me laugh out loud at the office.

Yes, it was Hands of Manos. Thanks! I did like Taz's too, but I posted a comment on another user's blog and now I can't remember their name. Hopefully, Hands will remember.

Was it t r a c y's, theFlyingSquirrel's, or sawks'? They were all mentioned in the other post.

I dislike blargle's profile a lot. While I love some of the creative changes people make, completely removing the usabilty of your comment history is, I think, undesirable and should be frowned upon.

*frowns upon it with as much gravitas he can muster*

These user pages were mentioned in the deleted thread: xmutex, PinkSuperhero, theFlyingSquirell, t r a c y, sawks, NinjaPirate, crunchland, dash_slot. (think quonsar was also mentioned in that thread)

Hand of Manos also see andrew cook and Steve_at_Linnwood for ideas.

Why so? Isn't the comment history more for your own benefit than anyone else's? I mean, other than using it to call people out or snark them by pointing out their contradictions from past comments and the like, why is it so bad to change your user profile into a small angry poem? As long as the profile isn't blantantly offensive (ahem), then what's the big deal, especially since the vast majority of user pages remain untouched? His userpage, his choice as far as I see...

The God Complex:
it's possible, as I'm sure you know, to reconstrust a members comment history, as long as you know their ID number:
Bargle's ID = 4417; substitute thatnumber for your own at the end of your profile page, thus -
all comments by dash_slot- becomes all comments by bargle.

rooftop: there's always been a sense amongst many members that comment histories promote accountability.

I just think it would be nice to have it presented on the user page, even if it was just a small "here's my comment history" link at the bottom of the page. I'm sure most people don't care about it, so I wouldn't push it--I do think it promotes some accountability though. Plus if the person ever does something really stupid, you can check the history and see if it's just a one-time, had-a-bad-day thing rather than a pattern of abuse.

Conversely, some people post really cool links and you can't remember what they've posted before, so it's nice to dig through their posting history and see what else they've posted.

Yeah, it's just more work than should be necessary ;)

Absolutely.

When did blargle write that? I'm sort of flattered.

Some people around here have come up with some very interesting profiles. And then, there are others that are not so great. But either way, it's nice for a new MeFite like myself to find out that I don't have to live with the boring default page. Thanks for all of the links in this post!

"Greatness" is definitely in the eye of the beholder - I liked andrew cooke's the best of all you linked to - it's very elegant in its simplicity. Especially considering it was designed by someone who doesn't know how to use the shift key.

I'd like to come down on the side of the people who think Matt's deleting way too much lately, but I'm afraid if I did he'd delete it.

That's pretty fun. I just spiffed up my own profile. Thanks for the inspiration, everyone

Since the earlier thread was deleted could someone email a few resources to a tech-challenged newbie?
posted by mlis at 7:39 PM on January 19, 2005

stopgap, I suggest increasing opacity a bit, to around 85%.

MLIS, the best advice was to find a user page that you liked and then steal code liberally. Really, look at some of the examples quoted in this thread and examine their code. Good stuff will be found.

And verify in other browsers as you go.

I'm going to do a "Work in progress" drawing on mine hopefully sometime next weekwhen time allows. Beautiful profiles!

"...find a user page that you liked and then steal code liberally..."

Yeah, that's exactly what I did: hence the plaudits and brickbats my profile attract occasionally are not so impressive on me. (",)

stopgap, mate, that's bloomin' gorgeous, in a kind of 1800's print sort of way. (no snark)
Probably my favourite at the moment, mostly because you've tweaked the typography. Bravo!

[lurk] I need to do something at all with mine if people are going to start looking at it. [/relurk]
