October 2021 Archives (all archives)
National November Writing Month is here. NaNoWriMo is a November writing challenge where participants try and finish 50K words in a piece of writing (WIPs or new). Write on your word processor of choice, analogue or digital - just update your wordcount each day. Post your NaNo account in the comments if you're open to being Writing Buddies. Check in to this thread throughout November to moan and celebrate and discuss past experiences. All versions of Nano welcome: AcWriMo for academics, NaBloPoMo for blog posters - post your version in the comments! [more inside]
Signups for the 2021 MetaFilter Gift Swap are now open! The Metafilter Gift Swap takes place annually from roughly November - January. Each participant sends a gift to an awesome Mefite; each participant receives a gift from an awesome Mefite. Awesomeness and gifts abound. The dates this year are: Signups Nov 1 - Nov 11; Assignments Nov 15; Send-by Dec 1. [more inside]
Mefite roll truck roll, a.k.a. Elliot Harmon, has died, age 40. [more inside]
We're going to have a show of MST episodes and assorted other things and movies in the MST Club room at https://cytu.be/r/Metafilter_MST3KClub this Halloween, beginning "officially" at 6 PM Eastern. It's kind of a preview of Turkey Day (which we traditionally try to get the stream in the room for us to watch together) and our annual Christmas Marathon. You can help us pick which episodes to watch with this Google Forms poll. [more inside]
As is not uncommon for threads regarding U.S. politics, the Dispatches from the Upside Down thread involves a debate between a leftist majority and a liberal minority. The thread seems fairly typical to me, in that about 10% of the comments are from a liberal perspective and about 90% are from a leftist perspective. [more inside]
Happy weekend, MetaFilter! (FaceFilter????) This week, I'm wondering what is something AMAZING that you are the last person on the planet to discover? This question brought to you courtesy of having JUST DISCOVERED STARDEW VALLEY THIS WEEK, and I clearly should have gotten into this years ago. [more inside]
I am looking to buy 1-2gig micro SD cards in bulk since CD swaps are history. While CDs are mostly dead, I'd bet most ppl here use Micro SD cards. I loved those swaps, I got some really great music, got more appreciation of "us" here at MetaFilter. [more inside]
I'm up for doing the holiday card exchange again this year! Let's talk timing.. [more inside]
For today's metatalktails, paduasoy asks, "What places and landscapes (urban, rural, wild, watery or anything at all; perhaps somewhere you haven't visited but think about, or somewhere fictional) are important to you or part of your own mental landscape?" [more inside]
Reddit Enhancement Suite has a "User Tagger" feature, which (aside from also acting as a killfile) will put a small note of your own choosing next to a user name, optionally with that tag acting as a link. I'm wondering if anyone ever developed that as a userscript for Mefi. [I also remember one that definitely did exist which would highlight the OP of a thread as well as mods (this being before the built-in admin highlighting was added). Does anyone have a link for that?]
I'm trying to find an article (or comment?) that I think I saw on metafilter. [more inside]
I would like to propose a space for Mefi visual artists to post works in progress for comments and suggestions (recently mentioned here), as well as suggestions for related videos and podcasts, possibly weekly or monthly art prompts, and that sort of thing? [more inside]
Hello Metafilter! Please find more details on the state of the site below. Reminder: I will be the only mod monitoring this thread so please be patient as I reply to your feedback and questions. [more inside]
It's the weekend, and it's time for some largely-unstructured chatter, and so: what are you looking forward to? Big stuff, small stuff, long-sought stuff, random stupid little stuff: it's good to be looking forward to something, so, what have you got? I see you shiver with anticip...
Accessing metafilter while logged out for a couple of months on my work laptop and it's only today I finally noticed the narrow green banner at the top inviting me to join. I appreciate the site's commitment to a text-based calm UI but surely this can be boosted some more before it's a blinking pop-up with a stock photo woman urging you that hot singles are in your conversation now. Ditto for the sign up page - the call to action is a text link at the very bottom after a screen full of text. Can we be more welcoming/inviting for non-members?
I accidentally wrote "make a podcast" on a colander instead of the calendar, so on the downside this episode is pretty late but on the upside it has been thoroughly rinsed. Is that anything? Can we do anything with that? Anyway, here's a podcast, it's about 90 minutes, and it involves me and Jessamyn getting off on at least a couple different tangents on the subject *of* getting off on tangents, so it's a very MetaFilter podcast indeed. Happy weekend, MeFi, a little late in the weekend! This week, I'd like to know what about mefi makes you say "thank goodness for mefi!" and I will tell my own sordid tale in the first comment.
I noticed recently that page anchors on MeFi were no longer working on iOS if opened in a new tab. Any links to specific comments just don’t work - the page loads, but I’m placed at the top, not the comment itself. It appears to be a known quirk with a usable solution. Can this be fixed?
