Good discussions on the Blue about Big Things at their infancy?

Inspired by today's post about pulsed power fusion, I wondered what it looked like when Tesla was first being discussed and found this thread that came out in 2009 just as the Model S was being introduced. It's fascinating to read people's takes. That reminded me of the 2001 thread discussing the nascent iPod, which is even better. Do you have any favorite posts discussing now giant things when they were just being born? Tech especially is cool but more serious things like the two "Trump is running for president" threads from 2011 - where Artw presciently calls him "America's Boris Johnson!" - and 2015 are interesting too.

Metatalktail Hour: Fashion Police

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, I want to hear about your most regrettable youthful fashion decision! Or, heck, it could be from last week. Just whatever time you were like, "Oooooh, this is a cool trend, I want in on it ... oh, nope, nope, I was very very wrong." [more inside]

should televised US presidential debates go in fanfare?

This is a MetaTalk to discuss whether presidential debates, such as the one we had tonight, which was posted as an FPP, should instead be put in FanFare. FanFare is a space with a specific category designated for live "Special" televised events, whereas posting about the debate on the blue (as happened this evening) ends up containing the same kind of fig-leaf URLs that generate liveblogging megathreads rather than actual discussion of a cool thing which was discovered and linked on the web.

Mefite's website of evidence of Trump's collusion

I remember that somebody in the megathreads was keeping a website that compiled and organized all the little bits of information that came out in the news about Trump's collusion with Russia (and maybe also other Trump stuff), but I can't remember the name and haven't been able to search for it successfully. Does somebody have a link?

Editorializing

What are the rules on editorializing, exactly? I notice some posts with a strong poster's-own-voice getting through, and some getting deleted, and I haven't been able to figure out the rules behind the rule. [more inside]

MetaAnniversary: FizzRecordings? nightFizz?

On this exact date, one year ago, I messaged Nightrecordings via MeMail to discuss this post about Serena Williams at the US Open. One thing led to another and...we're now married. I wouldn't have the love of my life without this community. I want to thank everyone here who made that possible. Apologies for the selfishness of this MetaTalk. I love you Nightrecordings! ❤️

Forgive me
it was for a class

Seeking an essay posted on MeFi

Do you remember a personal essay about a female researcher who very nearly missed the opportunity to present her work (due to a terrible combination of romantic breakup, burglary, and something else?) but prevailed, and went on to win major accolades? [more inside]

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, with the seasoning changing, I am ready for some NEW FOOD! Tell me what you're eating! What are you cooking, what are you getting as takeout, what are you eating at fancy gastronomy restaurants? slenderloris is also interested in knowing WHERE you eat and ON WHAT you eat (disposable? In the grand tradition of celebrating jessamyn day every year, happy birthday to you up there in VT and to me and all the other MeFites whose day it is! You were one of my very first Internet Heroes, who just seemed comfy in knowing things and being good to people.

Let's not use mass shooters' names.

I think that we should avoid using the names of mass shooters when we talk about them. It gives them publicity, which they want. We also shouldn't link to their manifestos, or to sites making money off them.

Open thread: Disability, d/Deafness, and neurodiversity

This thread is a place for us to explain what ableism is (explaining two models of disability and some other useful concepts), and provide a place for people affected by ableism to talk to one another in a space relatively free of pressure from people who are not impacted by that. You get to decide whether ableism affects you -- this thread is for everyone to read and for disabled people to (mostly) participate in. It is okay and highly encouraged for people to talk about themselves and their own experiences, but less so to talk about other people's imagined experiences. [more inside]
