Someone else should do this

How about a way to offer up a suggestion for a FPP that they themselves don't feel capable of doing, like, "Hey y'know what would be a great FPP? Something about how there's all these different 'colors' of noise; white noise, pink noise, brown noise, now there's green noise, and they're all different and special but I am not a noise scientist and in fact am pretty stupid when it comes to numbers and science so maybe someone else can make a post about it so I can enjoy it." Thank you.

Metatalktail Hour: The Books of Adolescence

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, apropos of this thread, I'm curious to hear about what book meant the most to you as an adolescent, and why (even if these days it might be a problematic fave). [more inside]

🗣️🎙️🎧

End of another week, let's talk about podcasts. What are you listening to? Maybe it's a new podcast you just discovered, or maybe it's an old favorite you've been regularly listening to for years. Have you learned something cool from a podcast that you'd like to share with us? I've been listening to the '1619', part of the 1619 Project from the New York Times about the destructive legacy of slavery. It's a heavy listen but engaging & thought-provoking. I also just learned about Justin Mcelroy's podcast about cereal 'The Empty Bowl', hilariously entertaining. Feel free to share what you have queued up. I'm always on the look out for a new podcast to follow. As always, be kind to yourself and to others.

Impeachment and the Whistleblower

I'd argue that maintaining separate single-topic threads for the impeachment discussion and the whistleblower discussion doesn't make sense and isn't working very well. Thoughts?

Metatalktail Hour: Roll Camera!

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, rhizome wants to know all about the "Movies where you live(d). -- Houses, apartment buildings, etc. stretching to landmarks (corner store, bus stop) where the person [that is, you] spent appreciable amounts of time. Movies, TV...maybe even books!" [more inside]

Impossible. Perhaps the archives are incomplete.

I'd always thought MeFi site searches were pretty much comprehensive, but last night I came across several search terms that were clearly missing content. Has anyone else noticed this behavior in the past, or could this be a new bug? [more inside]

Comment about Bernie Sanders and POC

Sometime around the last presidential election, someone linked to a post made by a POC explaining why they thought that POC were less likely to support Sanders than they were to support Clinton. The gist of it was that POC were more likely to support the political and economic conditions already in place because those systems were relatively predictable, and unpredictable systems were more likely to redound to the detriment of POC. I'm pretty sure the post was on Reddit, but I'm not positive. I also don't think this was in a megathread because I don't think the megathreads even existed yet, but I'm not sure. Can anyone help me out?

🌸 Just Happy Things.

Nearing the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. If you should feel so inclined, share something happy, anything that makes you smile or might make the rest of us smile. We need more of that in 2019. Here's a photo of a flower I took on a walk yesterday afternoon. Sending a smile your way. Be kind to others and yourself.

Good discussions on the Blue about Big Things at their infancy?

Inspired by today's post about pulsed power fusion, I wondered what it looked like when Tesla was first being discussed and found this thread that came out in 2009 just as the Model S was being introduced. It's fascinating to read people's takes. That reminded me of the 2001 thread discussing the nascent iPod, which is even better. Do you have any favorite posts discussing now giant things when they were just being born? Tech especially is cool but more serious things like the two "Trump is running for president" threads from 2011 - where Artw presciently calls him "America's Boris Johnson!" - and 2015 are interesting too.

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, I want to hear about your most regrettable youthful fashion decision! Or, heck, it could be from last week. Just whatever time you were like, "Oooooh, this is a cool trend, I want in on it ... oh, nope, nope, I was very very wrong." [more inside]

Mefite's website of evidence of Trump's collusion

I remember that somebody in the megathreads was keeping a website that compiled and organized all the little bits of information that came out in the news about Trump's collusion with Russia (and maybe also other Trump stuff), but I can't remember the name and haven't been able to search for it successfully. Does somebody have a link?

Editorializing

What are the rules on editorializing, exactly? I notice some posts with a strong poster's-own-voice getting through, and some getting deleted, and I haven't been able to figure out the rules behind the rule. [more inside]

MetaAnniversary: FizzRecordings? nightFizz?

On this exact date, one year ago, I messaged Nightrecordings via MeMail to discuss this post about Serena Williams at the US Open. One thing led to another and...we're now married. I wouldn't have the love of my life without this community. I want to thank everyone here who made that possible. Apologies for the selfishness of this MetaTalk. I love you Nightrecordings! ❤️

Let's not use mass shooters' names.

I think that we should avoid using the names of mass shooters when we talk about them. It gives them publicity, which they want. We also shouldn't link to their manifestos, or to sites making money off them.

Open thread: Disability, d/Deafness, and neurodiversity

This thread is a place for us to explain what ableism is (explaining two models of disability and some other useful concepts), and provide a place for people affected by ableism to talk to one another in a space relatively free of pressure from people who are not impacted by that. You get to decide whether ableism affects you -- this thread is for everyone to read and for disabled people to (mostly) participate in. It is okay and highly encouraged for people to talk about themselves and their own experiences, but less so to talk about other people's imagined experiences. [more inside]
