Welcome to another week of the MetaFilter 2024 Fundraiser! If you've noticed that moderator travelingthyme has not posted here recently, it's for a grave reason: while on a cross-country move, they were involved in a horrible accident that totaled their car, destroyed nearly all of their personal possessions, and tragically cost the life of their father. Now their friend has organized a GoFundMe to help cover medical bills, funeral arrangements, and replacement of everything from lost family keepsakes to household essentials (if you're in the Boston area, contact the organizer to donate items directly!). If you've found any value in this community in the last few years, travelingthyme is part of the reason why it's able to work -- please give what you can to help them recover from this terrible loss. The MetaFilter Auction has ended - but it’ll be back soon! Thank you to everyone who contributed items, and everyone who placed bids. It raised around $5,740 for the 2022 MetaFilter Fundraiser (approximate because some generous Mefites overpaid for their items). It was the first time we've tried something like this, so we’re delighted at the community response, and we’re planning another round in the new year. [more inside]

MetaFilter has made so much progress! With both the fundraising and the community involvement. We should think about a celebration! Here are a couple of ideas: 1. We could do something by Zoom the last week of the events. 2. In January, we could designate a weekend where we encourage people to get together for IRL events.

The simple idea: Over the next two weeks, we post some interesting gift questions on AskMe, then on Black Friday, collect those in an FPP and promote the FPP heavily across the internet. I’ve created a project plan and framework, got approval from staff and the supreme council, and am looking for advice and volunteers to help tune this idea into a winner. [more inside]

Until midnight tonight Pacific time, bandcamp is donating their share of all purchases to the Voting Rights Project. Everyone I know is using this as an excuse to buy all those albums that were on their wishlist, and to recommend all their favorite bandcamp music for everyone else to buy. Can we do that here? I wish I'd thought of this earlier, but there's still almost seven hours left in the sale...

O.K., let's play, then, since it's such a funny a goof, apparently. I volunteer for the next MetaSurvivor round -- let's give my many MeFi friends a nice fat chance to vote me off the island. Two requests, though. 500 dollars are bad for my ego, let's make it 1,000. And I don't care enough about CreativeCommons (sorry!), so if you want to kick me out you have to donate to these guys. Who wants to play with me?
