A (Temporarily) Better MetaTalk

What would make MetaTalk more useful and effective, in your opinion, in the short termβ€”the next X months until MetaFilter crosses the line into community-run status? Are there specific issues that you have noticed in recent weeks or months that you feel could reasonably be remedied and improve your experience here? [more inside]

Your media of 2022

What did you play this year? What did you watch? What did you read? None of it has to be the greatest ever, or even anything that came out in 2022, I'd just like to hear about what you spent time with and what it meant to you.

MetaTalktail Hour: what are you currently looking forward to?

It's the weekend, and it's time for some largely-unstructured chatter, and so: what are you looking forward to? Big stuff, small stuff, long-sought stuff, random stupid little stuff: it's good to be looking forward to something, so, what have you got? I see you shiver with anticip...

Metatalktail Hour: more like metatakenap

This week's topic is man, who has the energy to come up with a topic? I'm bushed, you look bushed, let's just say we're gonna read a book on the couch and then immeeeeediately sack out of an hour. So it's an open thread, talk about that good nap you took or that nap you need, or talk about hey whatever.

R_N returns, MetaTalk process changes

Hi. I'm back.

I'm not gonna be modding. I'm going to be handling the administrative work behind the scenes, managing policy discussions, and processing user feedback. For those of you who don't know or remember, this is my professional background - I've done community management for companies large and small, and I'm excited to be putting those skills to use more directly than I did when I was concentrating on moderation. MetaTalk Queue Notice

Quick MetaTalk queue note: I wanted to give you a heads up so that you know that we’ll have to hold off any substantial new MetaTalk discussions until next week. We’re going to be stretched especially thin the next few days and we’ll have partial coverage from mods during the weekend. We'll reach out to anyone who submits something to let them know about the delay directly as well. Community event or general discussions threads that don't require mod attention are fine and will be approved as usual. Thanks for your understanding.

πŸ§„ MetaGarlic

We're close to the end of the week, let's talk about something other than politics. Let's talk about garlic.
β€œGarlic is divine. Few food items can taste so many distinct ways, handled correctly. Misuse of garlic is a crime...Please, treat your garlic with respect...Avoid at all costs that vile spew you see rotting in oil in screwtop jars. Too lazy to peel fresh? You don't deserve to eat garlic.” ― Anthony Bourdain, Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly
Love it? Hate it? Any garlic-related stories or adventures? Do you grow it at home yourself? Do you have any special recipes that are garlic-specific? Feel free to share them here with us. Is there a particular varietal that you seek out? Did you know that Les Blank made a documentary all about garlic - 'Garlic Is As Good As Ten Mothers (1980)'. Here is the trailer. Let's talk about all things related to garlic. Remember to be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.

πŸ₯žπŸ³πŸ₯“ MetaBreakfast πŸ₯πŸ₯£πŸ©

End of another week, let's talk about something not related to politics. Let's chat about breakfast. What is your favorite type of breakfast food? Are you a fan of cereal? If so, what kind? Or maybe you're more into oatmeal. Are you an eggs, bacon/sausage, toast kind of person? Do you like maple syrup on your pancakes? Bagels? How about breakfast for dinner? Or maybe you do not conform to these types of predictable conventions and just eat whatever you want? What about pizza? Or steak? Or noodles? If you hate breakfast and generally skip it, feel free to talk about that too. Love it or hate it, let's talk about breakfast. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.

End of another week, and we're just a couple of scary weeks away from All Hallows' Eve, let's talk about candy. What is your favorite candy? What is your most hated? Are you a fan of chocolates? licorice? hard candies? lollipops and sours? Do you have a favorite candy bar? Is there a specific candy from a certain part of the world that you crave that you wish you had access to? As always, be kind to yourself and others. Cheers.

End of another week, and we're just a few scary weeks away from All Hallows' Eve, let's talk about haunted houses and/or ghost tours. Do you enjoy haunted houses/ghost tours? Do you hate them? Do you get scared easily? Are you into the extreme haunted/fright houses where you have to sign a waiver? Are there any 'real life' haunted houses in your area? Places with interesting or odd history? Let's talk about haunted places. As always, be kind to yourself and to others. Boo!

End of another week, let's talk about scary films. We're just a few 'spooky' weeks away from All Hallows' Eve. What are your favorite scary films? Do you have certain movies that you watch every year as a tradition? Have you discovered something new recently? Are you more into classic movie monsters like The Mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein? Or maybe you're into more modern franchises such as Paranormal, The Purge, Conjuring? Are you on Team Freddy or Team Jason? I'd also love to hear some horror reccomendations from other (non-western) countries around the world, films from Asia and Africa that aren't frequently a part of this conversation. End of another week, let's talk about podcasts. What are you listening to? Maybe it's a new podcast you just discovered, or maybe it's an old favorite you've been regularly listening to for years. Have you learned something cool from a podcast that you'd like to share with us? I've been listening to the '1619', part of the 1619 Project from the New York Times about the destructive legacy of slavery. It's a heavy listen but engaging & thought-provoking. I also just learned about Justin Mcelroy's podcast about cereal 'The Empty Bowl', hilariously entertaining. Feel free to share what you have queued up. I'm always on the look out for a new podcast to follow. As always, be kind to yourself and to others.

End of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. Let's talk about fireworks. Here in N. America we've recently celebrated Canada Day (July 1) and Independence Day (July 4). Both of these holidays are traditionally celebrated with the setting off of fireworks. Are there any other holidays from around the world where you celebrate with fireworks? I'd love to learn more about that. Do you hate or fear fireworks? Do you set them off yourself? Do you attend a local display put on by your town or city? Do you buy them illegally? Are there any specific types you prefer? Blackcats? UFOs? Roman candles? Feel free to share any photographs/videos of firework displays you've attended recently. As always be kind to yourself and others. And remember to practice proper fire safety protocols.

MetaUncontrollableGiggles

We're nearly at the end of another week, let's talk about something else that is not related to politics. I was driving home from work yesterday and I witnessed a man walking a tiny Chihuahua on a leash, he was smoking a cigarette while also drinking from a beer can & was running a little bit late at crossing the cross-walk and did this kind of "I'm sorry." dance in front of me and the way he waved his hand and smiled caused me to burst into an uncontrollable fit of laughter, pure giggles. I'd love to hear stories of a similar nature, some situation that caused you to burst into pure random laughter/joy because you witnessed it or were a part of it. MetaSkills

It's still early in the week but I'm already overwhelmed with politics and awful news. Let's lighten the mood and talk about something else. If time wasn’t an issue and you had forever to master a skill, what skill would you master? Sword-making, basket-weaving, knitting, quilting, embroidery, carpentry, coding/programming, languages, pottery, cooking, leather-work, tattooing, brewing, hunting, etc? Think like you're inside of a video-game and you have unlimited skill-points to invest in, what skill(s) are you leveling up? Also, be kind to yourself and to others. Cheers.

MetaGetOutTheVote

I thought that it might be good to have a place for people to share links/contact information/registration/locations etc. related to voting. The 2018 U.S. Midterm elections are just around the corner (Tuesday November 6, 2018). This isn't the place to talk about #potus45, we have our mega-threads for that. But this is a good reminder to remember to vote, to make sure you're registered, and to get out there and let your voice be heard.

It's maybe on your head, your face, your legs, your chest, your back, or not. Do you like your hair? Has it changed recently? Do you have some hair-related memories from your childhood? Or maybe you want to brag about that fancy pair that you wear when you go out dancing, or maybe you want to talk about the comfortable crocs you slip into at the end of the day. Maybe you found a way to pack luggage in a way that has made traveling easier. Maybe you found a way to deal with oily skin using some old world natural remedies. Maybe there's a cool browser extension or add-on that lets you do some nifty thing in your day to day Internet consumption. MetaJokes Podcast 'April Fool's Edition'

Back in January we had a year end call-in show/podcast. MeFites were able to call a line that Cortex set up to record seasonal greetings and well-wishes. A fun way to connect and listen to all of the wonderful people that make up our community. A number of MeFites called in and told some humorous jokes/asides. I previously mentioned how it might be fun to have a specific call-in episode for just jokes that would then be released on April Fools' Day (April 1). I realize it's a bit of behind the scenes work for our moderators, but if they're open to it, I think it would be fun. Let's discuss whether we can make that happen.
