Since yesterday, I haven't been seeing the comment count in the RSS feeds anymore. I've tried in the main metafilter feed and in the popular posts feed. Is it a bug, an oversight, a suppressed pony? Is it just me? Thanks for listening.

Advertisements in the RSS feed? Given that Matt has written before about his disdain for this bullshit, what gives?

Since the "troubles" all of my MeFi feeds have been messed up - posts are being identified in several different feeds etc. Is the best course of action to wait for things to correct themselves as the deployment wrinkles get worked out or delete the old feed addresses and re-add now that the new servers are deployed?
posted by mikel on Feb 7, 2009 - 16 comments

This is probably obvious, which is why I couldn't find it in the FAQ or the search. Why do people preface their questions with "[blank] filter:"? Does it help future searches and RSS filters?

I've been playing with a lifestream app, and it would be interesting to be able to pull my metafilter posting/commenting history into that. The most streamlined way for that to happen would be via RSS. It doesn't seem like there's any way to do that currently. Obviously this is a low priority, but if it's just a matter of flipping a switch, it could be interesting. [more inside]

I use the "Popular Comments" feed to keep track of all the great things you witty people are always saying. Currently, the title of each comment in the feed is formatted like so:

By orthogonality in MeFi

which does not provide any sort of context for the comment. [more inside]

I know we've discussed not adding tags to front page posts, but how about the RSS feed? For posts that are somewhat cryptic, it could help with context.

The RSS feeds for comments update in reverse order - with the most recent comments showing up at the bottom of the list (oldest to newest) - unlike the feed for posts where the most recent is at the top (newest to oldest). Why is this the case? [more inside]

The MetaTalk RSS feed is showing MeFi front page posts. I'm using NewsGator, and this has only happened (last I checked) within the past 24 hours. Does anyone else have this problem?

Greetings from a neophyte mefite. I was wondering: is there a way to get versions of the RSS feeds which don't include front-page posts that have already been deleted? If not, it's a feature suggestion, so please discuss. Apologies if I'm being dumb and this is simply not possible using RSS. (For a while I enjoyed the "guess if this post has been deleted" game, but it's getting old...)

MetaTalk RSS doesn't validate, isn't properly formed XML--due to unquoted special characters. This seems to be getting irritatingly common, is something missing out of the auto-quote list, or could we have auto-quote for the RSS beefed up in general? AskMe never seems to have problems, just MetaTalk almost every week or so.

I have a question/suggestion about the RSS feeds attached to each post. (If I have misunderstood something, and this turns out to be a 'Doh' question, then my apologies in advance ...) Closed threads still seem to have an RSS feed associated with them, including a 'Subscribe' link at the top. These feeds will of course never be updated, so will keeping these around be damaging to MetaFilter's standing in Google/Technorati/etc. rankings? After all, as time goes by, we'll end up with a gadzillion feeds that are never updated, and only a few (relatively) that are. I'm sure the Googlebot must be trained to give ranking 'demerits' to blogs, etc. with feeds that are never updated. Nuking the RSS feeds for closed threads would also make it easier for users. At present, we never really know when any given thread that we are following by RSS is 'finished' or not. But if we see in our reader 'Feed failed to load', that will let us know that it's officially done, and we can delete it. I guess you could easily create a daemon that would run daily, nuking the feeds for closed threads ...

Two things (and yes, I'm cheating). First, I'm wondering if there's any mechanism out there that allows us to look at a "best of" for Mefi and Ask Mefi. Popular favorites in the last 24 hours immediately leaps to mind, and would indeed be ideal, but I'm looking for an RSS feed, and Mathowie says that's a no-go in past MeTas. (Any chance we could change your mind, Matt?) I hear there used to be a third-party blog that did it, but I don't think that's around any longer. Perhaps the sidebar feed ... at least for Mefi? Still, the sidebar is like a "best of best of Mefi." Second, and on an entirely different subject, when the MeFi comment dividers Greasemonkey script is used, it throws off permalinks to comments ... if you click on a comment permalink somewhere else (i.e. a Recent Activity page or a Favorites page), you're at first dropped at the anchor for the comment on the page, but when the comment dividers are applied, it bounces away. Anyone have an idea how that effect might be avoided? I'm more of a idiot-splicer than a programmer, so I really have no idea how to change that script to avoid the effect. Thanks in advance for any advice or answers on both questions ...

The new RSS feeds (which are wonderful) are starting to show up in Google searches. I doubt this is what anyone wants. I would suggest that they be disallowed in robots.txt, or set NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW.

New feature: RSS on all threads. If you're using IE7, Firefox, or Safari, open any thread on mefi, ask mefi, metatalk, music, or travel and you'll see a small RSS icon in your address bar. Click that, and you'll find a feed of the post and all comments. We'll soon add explicit links on the pages themselves, but for now the autodiscovery tag should work. Use this feature to track new comments on questions you've asked, threads you were interested in hearing followups, and any other thread you'd like to stay up to date on in your RSS reader.

The rss feed for "ask metafilter" tagged empty sets returns an error. (For Example.) I wanted to add a bunch of esoteric tag links to google reader that would allow me to answer those questions that I consider myself an expert in. This works fine in those situations where questions currently exist for the specified tag, but not so good when nobody has asked a question about that subject before.

Playlist RSS pedantry: <link> might not be encoding special characters. This item isn't encoding as such in this playlist and is thereby horking up XML parsing.

Is there an RSS feed that is solely the Mefi meetup calendar listed in the MeTa sidebar? If not, Matt, is that something you might consider, or would it be too much of a pain in the ass? Separately, just because I'm curious (this ISN'T meant as a challenge): I understand posting limits on Mefi and AskMefi, to prevent abuse. I'm curious as to why Meta has one, though, and four days apart. Has it been abused in the past, or is there the potential for abuse?

Hi Mighty Admins (and MeFites). Just wondering if there are RSS feeds for posts? I've just recently discovered netvibes and it would be great if I could use RSS to keep track of posts. Of course, even better would be if I can get an RSS feed of my posts with an indication of how many comments are there. That way, I could quickly see if any new comments had been made, without having to add all these new RSS feeds everytime I make a post! Is this all pie in the sky, or is it do-able?
posted by ranglin on May 9, 2007 - 7 comments

MeFi has got all kinds of RSS feeds, but there isn't an official feed of the popular favorites page, which would be a great way to filter out the site to the most popular posts.

Is it possible to reach these people about the tasty moral goodness of using the title field properly - BEFORE they hit the submit button? The one at a time approach seems counterintuitive.

RSS gone bad? Metafilter Jobs, Ask Metafilter, and Metatalk are showing front page Metafilter posts instead of their respective posts. I'm using Google Reader, if that matters. I tried adding the feeds using Sage to see what was up, and it finds feeds but won't find any actual posts.

Can the RSS feeds be hidden from Google? They're pretty much useless in search results (like the first hit on this one).

A thread in which someone who browses AskMe via RSS, annoyed by people's tendency to post inadequately descriptive "Headline/Title"s, but aware that this has been discussed before, illustrates his displeasure by composing alternative questions to fit some recent titles, in an attempt to encourage others to submit titles that better describe their questions.
