what's up with all the apologetic posts lately? since when did metafilter become a religious site where communal acceptance depends on strict penitence?
Halfway to Our First Million on MetaTalk
Congratulations to tkolar on posting MetaTalk's 500,000th comment! Imagine, a half million assorted snarks, whines, callouts, flameouts, bugfixes, meetup setups, not to mention all the pony requests granted or rejected, the longboat voyages, the real-life detective stories and serious discussion of male and female body parts. What a long Meta trip it's been. [more inside]
Link to metatalk
Feature suggestion: If a thread or comment is referenced in MetaTalk thread, display a little indicator on the referenced thread/comment and have it link to the MetaTalk discussion.
*cue spooky music*
I can't be the only one?
I like the new /random in the sidebar, but all I use it for is to try and find good flameouts on the grey. Could there be a /flame, so I can have something to do on a rainy day?
Shut down all the trash compactors on the detention level!
What used to be a forum for bugs, feature requests, and the occasional callout for really egregiously bad behavior has devolved into a whinefest for anyone with a keyboard and a grudge.
YOU ALL NEED TO STEP AWAY.
Can we shut down MetaTalk for a week? I'm completely serious. The contact form is still there for emergencies.
Anything goes on MetaTalk?
I was a bit confused by Jessamyn's post. Are insults really kosher in MetaTalk?

What is the deal with every fifth or so MetaTalk thread being closed? Yes, some get messy, but that is where issues get worked out. The petulant pres closes off discussion because he can't handle it. Why does MetaTalk all of a sudden close all these threads? MetaTalk can handle it.
Take the Shame out of Shameless Self-Promotion on Metatalk.
We need to come up with a solution so that people who post their gigs don't have to pretend they're "Metafilter Gatherings" or "Metafilter Related," and so that they don't get accused of shameless self-promotion or whoring themselves on Metatalk when they post messages such as this or this. They don't quite fit into Projects, but they don't quite belong in any of the categories here.
MetaTalk comment redirect
When I'm looking at a user's page and click the timestamp of one of their MetaTalk comments, the link redirects to the original post instead of the user's specific comment. Does this happen to anyone else?
Why can't I add a hyperlink in MeTa?
In trying to flag this post, http://ask.metafilter.com/57197/Dont-Worry-Be-Happy as the worst sort of existential Chatfilter/guideline buster, I realized there isn't a 'link' feature in MetaTalk. And I am an HTML cretin. I expect this is intentional, or I'm missing something obvious.
we have prepubescent young fans!
RSS Title Length
Make "titles" in MetaTalk RSS feed longer? (more)
Projects Searches MetaTalk
The Projects search box does a site-specific search of MetaTalk, not Projects.
Most MetaTalk Posts In One Day?
What's the record for most metatalk posts in a day? Have we approached, or even broken that record today?
disspics

I think that they could be more useful than http://metatalk.metafilter.com/mefi/11568 [for example].

Pony Request: Dates/Times on the MetaTalk RSS feed?
MetaTalk RSS: TTL tag missing
TTL tag is missing in MetaTalk RSS (and possibly other feeds) but not the main Metafilter feed.
Deleted AskMe
I'm pissed and slightly baffled. My first post to Ask MeFi was deleted. Apparently I should have posted it here in MetaTalk instead? No one has bothered to explain why, but I'm assuming it's because it was a question about MeFi. (Why do I keep having to log in every time I return to MeFi on my iBook, but not on my PC?)
Well, excuu-uuse me!
I paid $5 for the privilege of posting one question a week, which is then deleted? That's just rude.

Please don't repost NYT links, thanks. And quit chatting in Metatalk!
This is the second–most prominant story in today's New York Times. Not what MetaFilter is for. Extra specialicious complaint: MeTa has become a chat forum. Also this, this, this, this, and this.
MetaTalk Comments Bug
Bug: Try going to a user's MetaTalk comments page (example).
If you click on the page numbers at the bottom, offsets don't seem to work. Therefore, clicking on page 10 should return comments 451-500, but actually returns comments 1-500. Presumably, if everyone who sees this clicks on page 109, and therefore requests all 5437 comments, the world will explode.

Moving to MetaTalk
Reading the thread about the eBay scam stuff, it made me want a new pony.
Wouldn't it be neat if when someone takes a post to MetaTalk (for whatever reason), that the original post be marked somehow (maybe similar to the "best answer" check-mark) to indicate that it had been brought to the other forum (by that I mean MetaTalk). This would make the whole MetaUniverse™ a more unified whole, more interconnected...
It'd also be entertaining for grouses like me who love to watch a trainwreck happen...

MetaTalk "Open Mike" night
Inspired by this blog's "Open Mike Friday" I thought I'd try a MetaTalk "Open Mike" night.
So, what's up/new with you? (Self-linking OK).

My archives links are gone
Occasionally I like to trawl through the MetaTalk archives. There used to be a link on the front to 'current archives' then 'all archives' but that seems to have disappeared with the introduction of the 'next' and 'previous' links. [more inside]
Is anyone else seeing the green Ask Mefi header but on Metatalk?

Total Comments in AskMe and MeTa
When looking at a MetaFilter post, the line under the description looks like this:
posted by too_many_notes at 4:56 AM EST (13 comments total) ( feature_request ) [!]
However, in both MetaTalk and AskMetaFilter the "(13 comments total)" is missing. I find this information useful in the thread. Could the green and gray be more like the blue?

new MetaTalk post limit
This will be my last MetaTalk post for the next seven days, because MetaTalk is now subject to the same time limits as Ask MetaFilter.
Recent MetaTalk Comments?
The MetaTalk front page currently reports two new comments but only shows me one. Obviously, a thread that has scrolled off the page is still active. How do I find out which one it is?
Closing MeTa threads may be a bad idea
I submit reason number one that closing metatalk threads may, in fact, be a bad idea.
This thread is has [sic] been closed.

Matt, you're closing MeTa threads after four (or ten) comments now?

Are there separate RSS feeds available for Ask mefi and MeTa? And if no, why not? I've found the main MeFi feed, but nothing else.
Thanks.
Thanks.
MeTa "More Inside"
Can we start using [more inside] in metatalk? It's a pain to come upon posts like This one after they've had their desired effect and the comment has been deleted. Because you have to basically guess what is being complained about. [MI]
deleting metatalk, broken blogad
Two things:
1. Deleting metatalk threads is bad karma.
2. The "don't pardon big tobacco" blogad is broken -- apostrophes ['] and quotes ["] are displaying as question marks [?] (this is strange, since quotes are displaying fine in the other blogad).

Publicizing mefi IRC
I had a crazy idea, just now. How about some sort of tiny advert for #mefi on the metatalk front page some place? I think the channel could (use new blood/be more visible/have rollerskating waitresses).
Mycroft searches for MeFi and MeTa
For those of us that use Mozilla/Firefox, I wrote up a couple Mycroft searches, one each for MeFi and MetaTalk. (they're listed in the "Undefined" category)
Link to AskMe
Ask MetaFilter is currently only available to those of us who come to MetaTalk. Since it's probably the best thing on MeFi since the sliced-bread thread, wouldn't it be an elementary courtesy to extend the service (and information) to the blue-only crowd? Is it really so marvellous that it deserves to be kept for us aficionados alone? Fwiw, I think we could use the extra minds and souls. Why not include a link (plus sidebar mention) on the main page? Or is it meant to be an insiders' secret? This, imho, is just wrong!
a thread about a lazy, fu...
In light of the recent "pat-yourself-on-the-back" thread, I just resisted the urge to type a snarky reply to a thread about a lazy, fu... ahem... a recent thread here in metatalk. I invite you to please resist the urge yourself.
Deleting MetaTalk threads?
Deleting MetaTalk threads?
Deleting blue threads, I understand and support. But deleting a metatalk thread is unexpected. Of course I'm not on the grey much. Maybe this happens all the time. This has been the first time in a very long time I've been interested in anything going on here so maybe I've just not noticed.
I would think a MetaTalk thread might be closed, but deleted too? That seems counter to what the grey is for, why it even exists. Maybe I just don't understand.
The grey is to discuss things you shouldn't discuss/don't belong on the blue. So now things in the grey are to be slashed as well?
I would prefer it not to be, but of course it is not my say. But I would like clarification, because there are other threads in the grey that have gone FAR BEYOND what I can only assume caused the demise of the affected one and survived.
(Deleted thread purposefully not mentioned so as to perhaps increase the lifespan of this question).

Lofi for Metatalk?
Is there an equivalent of lofi.mefi for metatalk? Miguel's rambling novel-writing-question seems to have been canned, and I want to see a) What Matt said about it, and b) what all the snippy comments after mine looked like. How about it?
metatalk too wide
Side scroll at 800x600 to about 900px wide in MeTa comments pages.

Good FPP derail belongs in Metatalk?
After seeing this thread denigrate into a debate over the question of whether it was a good FPP or not, I started wondering: is a metatalk thread an appropriate vehicle for trying to divert etiquette debate out a blue thread even when the metatalk thread itself is likely to turn into a rehash of a zillion other metatalk threads?
MeFi user survey about MeTa topics?
How about a MetaFilter user survey about some of the ideas that have been bandied about in MetaTalk lately: recommending or rating posts, enforced posting delays, giving better posters higher posting frequency, etc.
MetaTalk Login Bug
MeTa login problem. I get this, when I try to log into MeTa from the login link at the bottom of a thread. I have no trouble logging in from the main MeTa page though.
we rehash the same things over and over and over and...
One annoying feature of Meta: we rehash the same things over and over and over and...well, you get the point. And we say essentially the same things. Here's the idea: a Meta sidebar that includes common topics, with links to where they've been discussed. There aren't that many, and it would prevent this kind of post unless we come to some new situation where it's really needed.
Request to bring complaints about MeFi posts to Metatalk
God damnit! PEOPLE! Either participate in the posted thread as it is given, or IGNORE it. If you really have a problem with it, take it to MetaTalk and ask Matt to consider deleting it.
[whiny baby voice] "This is so tangentical..." This shouldn't be on a community blog it should be somewhere else.. blah blah blah!

links to metatalk from profile are not working
links to metatalk comments and threads posted from user profile pages don't work (links to metafilter comments and threads posted work fine). or, at least this is the case in ie5, macos9.
Metatalk for sportsfilter and blogroots? here?
Should one post etiquette/policy/bugs/feature requests for Sportsfilter and Blogroots in Metatalk , directly on both sites, via email, elsewhere? Assume identical guidelines apply as in Metafilter ? Thanks.
