Metatalktail Hour: Brand Loyalty

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week's prompt is from lyssabee, who has used Cherry Chapstick for 30 years: What brands are you extra loyal to? Remember, they're conversation starters, not limiters, so talk about whatever's on your mind!

Yes, PepsiBlue, I know.

I occasionally post links to ads, if I think they're impressive, interesting, and cool, rather than just, you know, an ad for something. Inevitably there are responses that are along the lines of 'this is an ad' or 'you got suckered into posting an ad' which I personally find frustrating. I see the same kinds of comments in other people's posts, and they frustrate me there, too. It's not like anyone really doesn't understand that GoPro posts all those cool videos to make you want to buy a GoPro, you know? Is there a way to frame that kind of post that'll tend to pre-empt those kinds of responses? Or should I just accept that they are always going to happen in ad posts?

Pepsi Blue Dot EDU?

Has anyone else noticed the weird attention that this AskMe about a small liberal arts college in Iowa has attracted? I get that everyone is welcome to pay their $5 to sign up and say their piece, but it smells a little like astroturf to me. [more inside]

GoPro Blue

Fireman Saves Kiten [sic] is a recent FPP that I take issue with. It's a commercial advertisement. It's great for Reddit but not great for MetaFilter. [more inside]

...are the rivers Pepsi Blue?

Village, village, village, village, village... buy a village. Done. I'm sure that this post is both good quality and made in good faith. I am however wondering where we stand on Pepsi Blue stuff these days, even that it's extolling a Rio Grande commercial card set and video game. [more inside]

This post is Pepsi-Blue. divabat isn't even trying to hide the fact. Smarties Australia paired 8 kids up with 8 artists to create art based on each Smarties colour ... getting the product name in twice in the lead sentence. [more inside]

No Pepsi blue?

How is it possible that there is no Apple post? Has there been a secret agreement to not shill that I missed? Is there a secret plot? I always enjoy the fireworks, and am missing them this Tuesday.

Viral Marketing on Metafilter

Viral marketing video as front page post, up long enough that it doesn't seem like it's going to be deleted. Slippery slope, blah blah. What say you?

Not sure where this post would go

Etiquettefilter: I want to bring mefites attention to a project, but am not sure if it is a FPP on the blue (with supporting links of course), a project (as I am not the creator) or, most importantly, a horrible Pepsi Blue self-promotion that will end up getting me banned. [mi]

Pepsi Blue in a new bottle?

Is this sort of thing just Pepsi Blue in a new bottle? Recently there was an AskMe post about men's shaving products that I know was a case of lazyweb market research (because the poster admitted as much on a certain orange-and-blue-themed site before he posted it), and I didn't say anything then, but I wonder if a) this is more of the same and b) whether the community at large cares if AskMe gets used this way.

BandAid Blue

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Also, the post fishily reads as some kind of PR release.

Acceptable to repost comments as FPPs?

Two things:

1) When is turning a comment into a FPP okay? The poster acknowledges it as such in the FPP itself and the old thread is still open for new comments. Shouldn't the new links be added to the old thread?

2) Also, pepsi blue.

Links to products: Cool? Shill? Both?

How does the community feel about links to products for sale, especially during the X-mas holiday shopping season? There seem to have been a few links which were pointing our products in their own right, without any broader point or purpose. Cool? Shill? Both?

"Pepsi Blue": no longer funny

NEWSFLASH: "Pepsi Blue" is no longer funny (was it ever?) As my very first post reflects, I actually am concerned about sly product placement on MetaFilter. But I'm tired of the cynical 'viral marketing' callouts on any post that is in any way tainted by the scent of capitalism. At one time I may have found it amusing, but it's just getting old. And in the FPP in question, I don't appreciate the backhanded accusation. It's obviously an innocent post, and if it garners more attention for lucky Mr. Kerry Edwards, then more power to him.

Can I link to my organisation's new product on Mefi?

I work for a large organisation that has launched a new web product. Its a paid for service. I'd like to post a link in the blue, as I am personally interested in what people think about it. I do not work on the product, but I do use it. Is this against policy?

Should this post be yanked before or after penis-enlargement-pills?

So this thread isn't exactly an advertisement, but it does link to a site whose actual purpose seems to be to sell some sort of penis-enlargement-pill.

I'm not saying that the post should get yanked, but I am wondering whether content whose purpose is to advertise a product should really be the subject of a front page post.

epinionsFilter

Product posts (aka: epinionsFilter). Whether extolling the virtues of Shure Headphones or the insanely great price Gateway has on its new plasma screen televisions, what are the guidelines to prevent MetaFilter from becoming a free advertising medium to reach the e-fluential?

It's an ad, but it's an old one!

In light of this discussion, and comments from matt... This thread seems to fit the bill for "not new" product announcement that only links to a marketing page. I know how much mac folks love their machines, but its not like this is the G5 announcement, right?
