healthcare more like HELLthcare am I right

Hi (US only) friends! It's health insurance decision season for most of us and we live in a grim dystopia where everything is expensive and nothing makes sense. Employer-sponsored benefits are something I know enough to be helpful about (I hope!) and I'm here volunteering my ability to speak the language, if you need it. [more inside]

US abortion access actions and resources: how we can help

In case the front page US abortion thread is overwhelming either you or your electronic devices, here's a much shorter, focused thread for resources, suggestions of actions you can take, ways to help, ways to get help. This brief What You Can Do guide was the standout link I saw in the main thread. It lists places to donate and other ways to help. [more inside]

Find this Metafilter novelist

Yesterday, I was hanging out on the site, and in a conversation about the pandemic, a Mefite mentioned having written a book, and feeling like it was published into the abyss because of the pandemic. Several people piped up to say they had just bought a copy. I would like to find that thread, or that Mefite. [more inside]

Looking for an image linked in a comment on the blue

Several years ago someone posted a link on the blue of a table that took prolife arguments and explained how to was or wasn't consistent with simply punishing women for daring to have sex. It covered abortion, birth control, and the hpv vaccine. [more inside]

MetaHelpfulNewPostsAdvice

Earlier today in a thread, there was a comment from Quackles:
“I know this is slightly off-topic, but as someone who hasn't made a post on MetaFilter yet, do you have any advice on what to consider, uh... worthy? I suspect I am beset by the same anxiousness.”
I know that we have the FAQ (lots of helpful advice in there), but I thought it'd be nice to just have a place to discuss how to ease into making a first post. People can share their tips, their suggestions, their own experiences making a post, finding out it was a double, or how some posts just don't fly and how some just take off into weird and wonderful places. General MetaHelpfulness with putting something out there for the community to engage with. Please share if you feel so inclined.

Ireland Hurricane Ophelia Check In

Thought there might should be one of these. Ophelia was a cyclone, tempest, a God damned hurricane. And she's bearing down on Ireland. Should be a little weaker, but MeFis, stay safe!

Hurricane Maria Check-In Thread

I hate that we have to have another one of these threads. Hurricane Maria has just strengthened to Category 5 and appears to be threatening the Caribbean again, most notably Puerto Rico. Caribbean Meifites, please sound off and I hope you're all okay.

How do you organize your favourites (2016 edition)?

I know there have been different scripts floating around, and I guess there's been more than one Meta about this (and at least a few comments); not sure if those solutions still good to go. (Or how to use them, or what they even are, exactly. Not that I particularly need to know precisely what's under the hood, but yeah, just what are they? Roughly.) I'd really like to be able to impose some kind of order onto my favourites, so I can find things (vs browsing through them, or hoping I remember a detail or word pairing vivid and unique enough to pop up in a Google site search). Super curious how people do it! (Sorry if this is old hat for everyone.)

Seeking a wedding reading found on Ask

I'm seeking a poem I found on Ask, suitable for a wedding reading, that talked about love as a series of repeated, mundane, day-to-day acts of service. Do you know the poem I've lost? [more inside]

Whatever happened to... Habit Judo?

A while back on MeFi (2011) apparently user Leotrotsky described an intriguing habit-building system he deemed Habit Judo, which as I understood it was essentially a gamification system for developing habits. I was so intrigued at the time, but I guess I never *surprise surprise* developed the habit of looking further into it. It appears that a spreadsheet of some sort was developed (and mentioned in the Guardian), and even spun off Android and iOS apps, both of which appear to be down. So I've a few questions... Bass guitar comment

Hey all. I could swear that I read a sad comment on this site not so long ago from a female Mefite that ran along the lines of "When I was a kid I wanted to play bass guitar but I was told I couldn't because bass was 'only for boys'. I gave up the bass." [more inside]

Post about photos of sullen teens?

Please help me find a recent post about teens' sullen expressions in photographs! I think the post linked to someone who had coined an expression about the "oh my god, why are you making me do this thing" face that some teens make in photos.

MeFi Bat Signal

Is there some sort of informal way that we can self-organize into a network of volunteers that can provide local assistance to AskMefites in need? Or maybe have the option for location information on AskMe questions so that we could receive alerts to local questions a la IRL? Or something? (Apologies in advance -- this is long, half-baked, inarticulate & rambly.) [more inside]

Can I easily retrieve the HTML of a deleted post?

You tell me how to retrieve the HTML from a post that got deleted plz kthx? (I posted something on the front page last night, and it got deleted for too much personal commentary. I'm fine with that.) User Goofyy and deleting admin kaz suggested that I re-post sans commentary. This is moderation, it's not racism. Are.you.serious?

This is going to be my first feature request on the site. I was wondering if it'd be possible to add a Sarcastic Font tag to our arsenal of HTML when posting. As many of you are aware, it is sometimes extremely hard to convey sarcasm in written text, and I think this would really benefit some people by spelling out when someone is being sarcastic. Here are some examples of its use. Thank you for your time, and just so you know, HAMBURGER jokes are so 2011 (or whenever that was first introduced).

Greasemonkey script question.

I'm trying to find a specific MeFi greasemonkey script. It would 'bookmark' the last comment you read, so when you returned to the thread, a grey scrolling bar would appear on the left-hand side, pointing down, until you hit the last(ish) comment you read, when it would turn into a slightly different shape. What was this thing called? I cannot find it on userscripts.org.

asking for programming help

I am finishing work on a short python program for my master's thesis. I am a newbie at python, and would like to ask for help optimizing the program in AskMe, by posting the actual script and having people with more experience give it a look. 2 questions: 1) does this sound too do-my-homework-ish? 2) the program is about 130 lines, would it be kosher to post the whole thing inside the question (not on the front page, obviously)? Or should I just link to the .py file on a server?

Unsure what to do

I'm writing a post in which I'm making an offer of direct help, and I'm really not sure whether that offer is a good idea (I'm not sure whether it's a good idea whether to make the offer, and if it is a good idea, I'm not sure that it's a good idea to post the offer where others can see it). It's nothing illegal, I think, and certainly nothing wrong, if the circumstances are what they appear to be, but I have no way of knowing if circumstances are what they appear to be, and if they're not, what I'm offering to do could be a very bad idea. Anyway, I obviously don't want to post any more specifics, so who can I ask what is appropriate in this situation?

Having some problems with making links in AskMe

Having some problems with making links in AskMe, tried to add a couple to this post but preview reorganises the html, seemingly at random, ie added two links, one worked, one didn't, went back to fix (then delete) one then other one went wrong, even after I switched to cut and pasting a couple of symbols were added to the end of the URL.
